Idk if they intended it(I'm p sure they did tho), but that reaction Leon had stabbing Mendez when he grabbed Ashley very much felt like less of a "I have to protect the president's daughter" thing, and more of a primal, instinctual "please not this again" thing because of everything from Raccoon City

I get it that they made it so that picking up every item doesn't result in an item display screen, but I sure do miss that ominous screen you get when you pick up a key item. It was great with the creepy music because it really made you feel like having and using this key item is going to come with some consequences. Just to remind you that the game will get more challenging

One of the scariest moments for me in the original game was when you have to get through the village with Ashley at night. Something about it being dark and rainy that you can't even tell where the enemies are coming from, but that was completely absent here. Lot more pleasureable experience. I'm the type of guy who doesn't like scary games much, so to me this is better lol

I think it is because he takes his transformation as a miracle from God to fight Leon, so he takes it more calmly. Whereas in the original, he takes it more aggressively. It fits with both personalities shown in both versions (he was aggressive in the original, whereas in the remake he's more soft and calm).
I have played the original RE4 front to back more times than I can count and I know every moment like the back of my hand, and yet this is stressing me the hell out.
I personally think that Mendez is more intimidating here than in OG version. They way Leon , ashley & ada being chased by Mendez and we can’t kill him at all, with some minor enemies around, kinda reminds me a bit when i was chased by Mr X.

Unfortunately, offscreen transformations are one of the prices we pay for the graphical upgrade. From what I’ve read, that kind of thing is simply too demanding on the hardware.
Its not just the transformations. Almost all of the cutscenes are completely lackluster compared to the OG. At least so far up to this point (only made it to the castle). El gigantie has that epic suspenseful build up to the villagers bringing him out, only for him to completely destroy them. big cheese has his epic transformation, sharp claws and blood all over. Even minor cutscenes seem forced or too fast with little substance. But as usual, the typical dumb reply to any criticism with RE4 is the lame "just go play the OG". Why? We have a new game with new mechanics that should surpass the OG. We paid money, we should've gotten a better product. Gamecube handled real time transformations. Guess we're going backwards in technology.

For the most part I love how this remake handles the OG set-pieces but man, something about the Chief Mendez fight in the original is so tense in the way it was structured (the music in particular adds so much to the fight), and the remake in comparison tries to be too epic both with the pumping orchestra music and Mendez talking non-stop which detracts from the overall experience and makes it wayy less memorable than its 2005 counterpart. The team behind the remake HAS the capacity to create some tense boss fights (just look at the first Birkin fight in RE2 remake) but they wanted to go in a different direction which may work for some people but imo it was ehhh
