This man is truly a joy. It’s a pity he does not get the recognition that Bob Ross does because Bill is the original master. What a beautiful person.

Jeremy Davia he doesn’t get the recognition because he is nothing like Bob, two completely different personalities. The public obviously preferred Bob, and his more soothing and caring personality than Will. It is the way the world works. Neither of them invented this technique, neither of them did anything unique In Painting, but Bob was different in that he was calming and soothing and that attracted viewers, 90% of the viewers watching Bob tuned in to watch bob, and not paint along, that’s a fact you can look up. But I doubt you do any research before you speak.

he came with the skill and not the personality. Bob had something special that others didn’t have.

Michael actually he got a lot of recognition including an Emmy. I remember him well from my youth and I loved watching him before Bob learned from him.
Bill’s personality was fiery, energized and warm and Bob’s was soothing and warm. I like the saying “Bill in the morning and Bob at bedtime.”
For Bill too there was a barrier where language was concerned. His English was excellent but his accent was heavy. Whether we like it or not there is a prejudice in our country with certain accents and a tendency to gravitate to those who speak the way we do. It was difficult to get ahead as a popular, public personality with a heavy German (in his case Prussian) accent. Even now I see comments everywhere that mock Bill’s accent to one degree or another. I personally love it but there are many who would likely never give him a chance.

Wow I never realised where Bob Ross got all his tips and a lot of his sayings from! I think the thing was with Bill is he didn't have English as his mother tongue and struggled sometimes to express it in English. But the guy is a top man and his technique was brilliant! Einfach wunderbar

Yeah but you ain't doing no Albert Beirstadt painting in a 30 minute show. The cool thing about Bill and Bob's technique is you can add as much or as little detail as you want. You can make it super realistic like Albert but you will be putting many days into or you can get a damn good landscape in 30 minutes.

Bob Ross was actually a master painter in traditional art. He just didn't enjoy it. But wet on wet gave Ross a sense of joy. And you have to remember Ross was also purposely using overly bright colors and simplified concepts so that beginners could follow along.
I agree that wet on wet Alexander was better than Ross, but Ross was a teacher, Alexander just wasn't a teacher.

That’s the first time I see him. (Thanks Kelly for telling the story of how it came to be that Bob Ross copied him th-cam.com/video/uoBPnzyREaI/w-d-xo.html ).
As a German I find his accent so funny (8:59 „Yu must always denk“; 12:38 „people who do nat paint would denk“).
Also I already loved him for using the word „hypnotize“ in the beginning, and his hypnotic way of speaking. It’s just great, discovering that before there were ASMRtists there was Bob Ross, and before Bob Ross, there was William Alexander (Edit: after watching one more I have to say that now I see the differences more than the similarities; guess Alexander wasn’t as much ASMR as I had hoped for)! Oh that sweet self-hypnosis by watching people do stuff on the screen... and their own sing-sang and rhythm.
Can you imagine how mesmerizing it must have been when cinema was first invented? There was no sound but the noise that the projector made in the dark, and maybe the sounds of your fellow audience breathing and holding their breath with the ebb and flow of events on the screen... - god, now I need to find a video with real movie-projector noise in it... - (ASMR-addiction: next thing to get into the ICD-code-books? ;-) )
Edit: after thinking about the origin of the word „mesmerize“, I might have to go even further back when thinking about the hypnotic qualities of watching people do stuff in circumstances of high concentration and focus in the dark of a room... - maybe I shouldn’t have stopped going to church 20 years ago (- and cinema for that matter). I always thought ASMR was the flip-side of porn (- delivering the careful attention), but maybe ASMR is the flip-side of not going to church and cinema and theaters anymore... - ok, maybe I should just do it right and go right back to telling stories around campfires in caves and people doing cave-paintings...

I agree, i see a great difference, and Bob Ross is a further degradation for me, yet William was still a real artist, who definitely started painted from life,in a traditional (post impressionistic) way, i guess!

Same here. Patton obviously exaggerated things for comedic effect, but William Alexander does get a bit aggressive with the brush! "And add a little darm brown paint here fpr the mountainside....beautiful little mountainside...very good, and........my third wife was a BITCH!"

As he painted in the beautiful clouds claiming they're a mistake, I started to sink in deep reflective thoughts if we humans were a mistake. We're the spoilers of Earth/life. The oops of our creator. The spoiled brat last child of evolution.

Super! I like it when he says he will do it like he did it at home. That's the way painter really start, maybe with a messy palette with remnants from the last painting session. I totally can identify with this method!! :-D

I watched these in the early 80s with my mother and we loved him! We always loved “The Mighty Fan Brush to FIRE IT IN!!” He was original and fun. I remember watching and seeing a mountain just pop out of nowhere. I am not going to comment on Ross because he doesnt deserve it. W.Alexander was great, original and i would love to buy one of his original.

being born in the 90s, i had never heard of him and heard of Bob Ross in passing. it’s crazy how much he copied him, the sayings, the screen, the positivity. it’s really sad

After reading the comments, and learning the story of "steeling" the style and manner of Bill Alexander by Bob Ross, i could say that, actually, Bob Ross did what Bill Alexander did toward his teachers - he just make a show from a what he was taught by somebody who never had an idea that the painting process might be a show. ( in my Academy of Arts in former Soviet Union our teachers did not encourage us, students, to paint "lightly", and it was a very serious warning against such things, as pallete knife techniques in such style, because of the temptation to "spiral down" as an artist, if you would do such things all the time. It really kills an Artist inside an artist. )

I’m just now reading more about where Ross learned his skill and I think I scarcely remember seeing Alexander before. I read he and Ross eventually had a falling out which his a shame because both are important, whereas Ross seemed to connect better with the audience in his style. Alexander falsely claimed he “invented” this technique of oil painting but he didn’t, although he did kind of develop the happy painting idea. But Ross took it and developed it further, simplifying it into a cultural phenomenon.
Alexander might’ve even been a better artist but Ross developed the language of this kind of painting and probably just never cared enough to develop it past television. There’s more to life than painting alone
