Just added an another 12 TB Ironwolf, first time that I added a disk to my existing DS923+ I did run a full smart test that took around 18h to complete before adding that drive to my existing RAID1. I switched from RAID1 to RAID5 in the process too.
Hi and thanks for the great channel. Can you possibly briefly explain process for upgrading to 2 larger capacity drives in a 4 bay system which already has 4 identical drives present? (Synology DS920+). I'm running low on volume and there are no drive errors. Does it matter which of the 2 drives you remove and replace? There are several TH-cam videos explaining this but they all seem to either replace failing drives or adding drives to vacant drive bays. Can't find any advice about replacing healthy drives in an already full system. Must you disable and then remove a drive 1st and then rebuild the Raid and then repeat with the next drive? NAS off or on and hot swoppable? Many thanks and once again, thanks for all your efforts with the great videos.
Fantastic and helpful videos on Synology NAS. I followed your video in order to add another 6 TB drive to my 2 slot Synology NAS drive and after the whole process, it shows as recognized and running normal, but my total Storage Pool still only shows 5.5 TB. Like the 2nd drive didn't add anything. Note both drives are healthy and their allocation status shows as Normal. I will tell you that my drive 2 was in another 2 slot Synology NAS before adding it to the other Synology NAS. Can you give me any direction on what could be the problem? Thanks
Yes please I would like to see about building a simple basic NAS with comparison to just buying one. Also just how old of a board and processor could be used. Reason I ask is I have an old Gigabyte board (never used) with an AMD XP class processor. I have both a Barton and Thoroughbred core processor. Old IDE connectors with two Sata connectors on MB. If not useable then I will have to find a inexpensive board. I also have several older cases lying around. I'm sure I might be able to use some parts.
This system appears to be using "Synology Hybrid Raid (SHR). But often time other types of RAID are used. You can't add another drive to for instance RAID 1 without changing the RAID type.
Hi would adding a additional hard disk, would the process erase the existing data on the other exisiting hard disks ? Currently the array is in RAID 5 mode
I'm about to buy a 8 bay nas and 2 18 tb drives harddrives are quite expensive so I was looking for if you are able to buy drives gradually and still have one volume if I understand this video right that is possibly right?
Hi! if i want to add two drives to my existing SHR.... do i have to add them one by one or can i just install both of them and add two to my storage pool?
Hi, I have a Synology DS920 plus running 2 x 4tb wd red plus drives in SHR as a Plex media server. I've just ordered 2 more of the same drives to fill up the 2 remaining bays so my question is: Should I add the new drives together or 1 at a time? Many thanks in advance for any help 😊👍🏾
May be u could help. I have my synology with capacity for 6HD of 12 T each. - But somehow it only uses the capacity of 2HD when in reality there are 3 brand new disks. The same was when I had two I had only available 1HD. What am I doing wrong, and why I can't use all HDs? Thanks
What if I have Storage pool with 2 x 4TB drives in RAID 1, and now I want to add 2x 8TB drives to expand this storage pool. Synology shows me that If I add the 2x8Tb to this storage pool, its size will expand by 3.6TB only. What to do to get the 8TB expansion?
I've got a DS1620, 4x10TB and 2x12TB drives with about 50% storage. I tried to find your backup video, as commercial backup for that much data costs about £3k. For that much I could buy another NAS, or is that the point? Are there any cheaper options?
I followed your steps but after a couple days once the storage has been added to the pool, I still don’t see the storage get bigger.(the new one wasn’t added to the total amount) what could be wrong?

I have a synoligy 1815 it had 8 3tb drives , i had to replace 2 of them and could only find 4tb drives. Everything worked replacing them , but the nas only see 3tb out of the 4tb. So i loose 2tb. How can i use those 2tb? I have it running raid 6.
Maybe you guys to help me understand why use a very expensive Synology for storage expansion instead of a JBOD or DAS. (Different country) a 5 Bay Synology here is over $1000 where I can get an 8 bay JBOD for $350. Is it only for the RAID back up reasons? I mean you can use software like stablebit to the JBOD for pooling etc (Not a business or office backup). What am I missing? Its mainly for expanded movie storage for Plex. Backups are not hugely important.
Q - My synology got only 2 hdd slots. How can I expand them when I have no free conector left? A - Just buy a new Synology NAS, preferably with 5 or more hdd conectors. q - Indeed, that's the way for upgrade.

They sure do
Always good to see a video about NAS systems. Thanks, Brian, for this educational video.
Glad you enjoyed it!
