I work at a grain elevator and never knew how a combine worked. I was born and raised in a major city, ended up in BFN South Dakota. I've spent many years in college but never bothered to learn how the farm machines worked. Now, life has thrown me to a grain elevator. I grade, probe, and do maintenance at the elevator. I asked others but their words didn't complete the picture. Thank you for adding to my education!

I remember reading a John Deere bulletin talking how they tested all the rotaries on the market, and came to the conclusion that their conventional machines performed best in all conditions, and they wouldn’t consider building a rotary.
I remember them saying that.
Based on a 25ft straight cut header, that makes sense. But at 45ft...even the biggest conventional combine would be crawling... probably not a lot of losses out the back. But also not getting many acres done in a day.
John deere corprate- Relax it only costs 3-4 family generations to pay off.

individual farmers never buy this, they hire the machine in the harvesting period, and the agencies will hire machines from "financial leasing" sub-companies of large banks. so yes these machines are often owned by big banks, the same thing happens on airplanes

I swear that rotor looks like the same thing from a red combine back in the 80’s.
Like a piston, it works exactly like the first one...lol
It took the red one to engineer the green lol
MrMagnum7220 IHC came out with the first rotary in 1978.
Deere was outselling red with our walker machines. Six out of every 10 combines sold were Deere walker combines. Do you goofy guys have any idea how many were yellow, grey, goofy two-tone green Class or even red of the remaining 4 machines? Look it up before you spout off. Red wishes Deere never made a rotor combine and a new twin-rotor will be out for 2022 harvest. Testing it all over the world now. Hold onto you sox gentleman!!!!!!!
But did Deere copy what red did 40 years ago?
Even though farming is such hard work, farmers do get to play with some really neat toys! God Bless the American Farmers! I speak for everyone by saying thank you for keeping food on our tables!

@@culmalachie That is not what I'm saying. Do not take my comment out of context! Read my comment again. Farming is hard work and expensive to maintain. When I say playing with toys, its meant in a fun way. Can you imaging being a farmer before these advanced marvels of incredible engineering were invented? No one except for the old timers can! Machinery will break and hard work along with money is needed. So farmers should have should enjoy their investment whether they own the equipment or rent them during harvest season.
If a farmer does not appreciate the expenses needed to maintain them, then they should not use them until they realize how much less income they will have by paying for human labor instead.

A virtual copy of the white 9700 rotary combine from the late 70s early 80s. Interesting that the custom cutter we used brought 10 regular jd combines and 2 prototypes with a factory guy each year. They really looked over those white combines and were very interested in the capacity and design.

Maybe, but our jd s680 is harvesting as much as our 3 yr old case header and using a lot less fuel.
China loves the definitive videos that John Deere does it makes it so easy to copy without actually stealing the technology. You only have yourselves to blame when they flood the market with your technology 😂 at half the price.
Its not like the chinese arent allowed to buy one and reverse engineer it so.....the problem is when china tried to smuggle our corn genetics out of the US a few years back.
And like most chinese reverse engineering it is complete junk.

Some of our old stuff does the same job with literally 25 percent the fuel of our new. Equipment I'd love to see a law making manufactures having to keep making replacement parts for at least 30 years.
And another that says, something like "the total price of all spare parts together, cannot exceed twice the price of the new machine". Understand, the spare parts are totally overpriced. I understand they have to do so because of its long storage delay, but still. It's like HP with their inkjet printers.
They know they wont have to make parts for 30 years. They are engineered to last only 10 yrs. About the same as Deere's payment plan. And I did'nt go to college. I went thru Deere's financial schooling in the 80's. Its main course was in rising interest rates and still making payments on time.

Stupid question but would the concave have to be changed out to switch grain type like from Wheat to Corn or is it the same and just change the hight?

not a stupid question, With round bar concaves which most everyone around here use for corn, you can get an insert that makes the holes smaller for smaller grain which works good for beans, wheat you might wanna get a set of small wire concaves as well but would probably be ok without
I'm operating on axial. We do indeed change the concaves. I tried using two corns, and one wheat, but the performance was bad. I doubt you wouldn't need to change them. Corn is very different from wheat, when it comes to harvesting it. Anyway, if the machine is well build, it takes one hour or two (and I get both wheels off for better confort :) )
Yes and no. I can't speak for John Deere, but with Case IH (basically the exact same concept - only they started using it 30 years sooner) they make cover plates that can be attached to the bottom side of the concaves forcing material to stay in the rotor longer which would achieve similar results to concaves with tighter openings.
A key part of a rotor combine is that threshing is primarily achieved by the plant material coming into contact with other plant material - not by contact with the metal of the rotor or the metal of the concaves. Optimally material should stay in the rotor long enough to be adequately threshed, but not any longer (as you can damage the grain), but there are different ways to achieve that.
Good see John Deere are only focused on equipment for farming simulator now.

Getting food into the bellies of over-weight Americans is a very gadget intensive proposition.
