"Smooth jazz is music that evolved from a blend of jazz fusion and easy listening pop music, featuring a polished pop feel with little to no jazz improvisation. The genre arose in the mid-1970s in the United States, but it was not named "smooth jazz" until the 1980s. Traditional jazz players and jazz purists did not embrace the popular style; Jazz Journal's "Sound Investment" column stated in November 1999 that it "would cover an extremely wide spectrum of jazz styles" while avoiding smooth jazz.
The earliest smooth jazz music appearing in the 1970s includes the 1975 album Touch by saxophonist John Klemmer, the song "Breezin'" as performed by guitarist George Benson in 1976, the 1977 instrumental composition "Feels So Good" by flugelhorn player Chuck Mangione, and jazz fusion group Spyro Gyra's instrumental "Morning Dance", released in 1979. Smooth jazz grew in popularity in the 1980s as Anita Baker, Sade, Al Jarreau and Grover Washington released multiple hit songs. The smooth jazz genre began to decline at the end of the 1980s in a backlash exemplified by critical complaints about what many critics saw as the "bland" sound of top-selling saxophonist Kenny G, whose popularity peaked with his 1992 album Breathless." ~Wikipedia

Absolute bliss. I remember when I was in my early 20’s, I’d hop in my car and drive into Manhattan, put CD101.9 Smooth Jazz on and just drive for hours into the night. It was so peaceful and relaxing hearing a Saxophone playing amongst the NYC lights..

I fell in love with the first jazz music without knowing what it was called. I played everything John Klemmer put out. I went to every Chuck M. concert in Seattle. I played a Benson song for my wedding. The list goes on. My baby was listening to smooth jazz long before she came into the world. She still loves an enormous variety of music now. I followed every SJ radio station there was, and then like others discovered, they all just melted away. It's okay though. I still have my albums, cassettes, cds, and now the internet. I told my son to check out Jazz for relaxed driving. Today, he texted me on his long drive home. His dog was restless. He played Jazz and his dog quickly chilled and slept for hours.
Now, being an older guy, I was actually talking about classic Jazz greats. I have no idea what kind of Jazz he was listening to, but since he's 31, I'm guessing that he probably chose a modern Smooth Jazz playlist, since he likes Rap, Hip Hop and R&B.
But, I'm glad that he discovered the wonderful effects of Jazz which can be simultaneously stimulating and relaxing. I'm only a casual Jazz fan and I know that much.

My boss has a few dogs, and when I told him about my son's experience, he told me about a funny story about a debate that he had with his wife. She insists on leaving Smooth Jazz playing on their house stereo for their smaller dog, which gets anxious whenever the couple leaves the house.
My boss says that he can hear the dog scratching the door when they leave and that he knows that the dog just heads straight to their bedroom and stays there for the entire time they're gone. He argues that his wife is just wasting electricity, but if it makes his wife feel better to think that her dog listens to Smooth Jazz, then it's not a battle that's worth choosing.
I asked him if the dog could still hear the music from their bedroom. He said, "Yes." I responded, "Then how do you know that the dog doesn't calm down to Smooth Jazz music for at least some of the time when you're gone? So, maybe your wife is right." He replied, "Of course, she's right. How do you think that we just celebrated our 20th anniversary? I always let her think that she's right."

Never been a big fan of jazz but it's been a really crazy day so I put something on to soothe me. I have a newfound appreciation for the jazz genre in general now
Jazz's just a buzzword, there's plenty of different styles in Jazz, nothing sounds the same besides for the swing/dissonances. That's just the tip of the iceberg, happy diving into this genre.
Everything I learned about jazz is from Charlie Brown.
This is my continuing education.
I work in education and this is the best thing to relax my mind.

Sitting on a lounge chair on Jekyll Island, Georgia watching thunderstorms out at sea and enjoying Dr Love Jazz and sipping wine.
I think jazz is the only kind of music you can dance, study or sleep to. So upbeat and soothing simultaneously.
There used to be a local station that played this stuff, & this friend of ours had this '78 Lincoln, absolute land yacht, & we'd cruise around listening to this music, it was epic

I remember Listening to Music like this in the 80's - Late at Night after you walked out of a Club - Late Night 2 a.m. - Quiet Streets - a Smooth Breeze in the City Lights - The Smell of Old Cigarette Smoke in your Clothes - the Sheer Silence - Getting into the Car - the Sounds of George Benson, Al Jarreau, David Sanborn - and Smooth Jazz like this. It was our Time - It was my Time - but I still have Channels like this to remind me of what we had - Our Kids will never understand it.
