I lived in Uganda for several years and actually developed curriculum about space for a teacher training program! It was SO fascinating to speak about space with children and teachers. One teacher told me “I don’t think we should mess with what’s above, we have so much to worry about here.” Which I know is a sentiment many people all over the world hold. I also found some teachers had a fear of what might happen if we explore space. There was a lot of mixed responses to space exploration so I’m excited to see how that pans out in your film!

That opinion is only held by the vastly ignorant, the people incapable of seeing the previously unimaginable amount of advancement potential that the heavens represent. Africa has many self created problems that they must solve before they can ever hope to join the space race. It will likely be hundreds of years before any serious African space effort can be both entirely funded, developed, launched and orchestrated by an all African team, without substantial help from the East or West. Africa never experienced their own collective reformation period, like Asia and Europe, so if their future resembles our past, they have to endure that period of trouble before any real parity can ever exist between any African countries and say, America, France, UK, etc.

Not the only African country to give it a go! Zambia did it as well! In 1960, a guy named Edward Makuka Nkoloso founded the Zambia National Academy of Science, Space Research and Philosophy. And from its founding to 1969, he had ambitious plans to send a teenage girl and two cats to the Moon, as well as plans to Mars, with the Mars program's goal to Christianize Martians making Zambia the "controllers of the Seventh Heaven of Interstellar space". Those who participated were called Afronauts (yes, I'm not kidding), and like in Uganada, they were trained to go to space by rolling down hills in oil drums to simulate the feel. But of course, they never actually went to space. So what happened? Well... They DID create a rocket called D-Kalu 1, a three meters by 2 meters drum-shaped vessel made of aluminum and copper (or at least that's what he said). It was supposed to launch on the day they got their independence from the main stadium, but they were denied because the government deemed the rocket as inappropriate for space travel. Edward then attempted to get a grant of millions of Zambian pounds (the currency used then) from UNESCO, but a Zambian government ministry made it clear that he didn't do it on behalf of the country, so that too was rejected.

Finally someone with actual brains, it seems. I ended this video knowing exactly the same I knew about the Ugandan Space Program before, which is nothing. This was one of the most pointless videos I've seen in a while, there was zero content except the guy wasting other people's time (why he feels entitled to take time out of this people's life for this "interviews" is a mystery to me). Yes, I get this is supposed to be the lightest, superficial kind of "storytelling", but can't his viewers handle 5 minutes of actual information? Like, how much money was wasted in this space program? Who was actually in charge? How much money ended in some general's pocket? How far is the work of the private "space program"? How is it funded? Instead, we got to see a guy travel to Uganda to waste other people's time instead of actually reporting of telling a story. Still, his viewers are unironically impressed by his unique storytelling style. Are this people braindead?

We stopped posting our adventures a few months ago since we had our baby but now that he's a fearless toddler we've started to bring him on trips so this definitely gets our vlog juices going!
