As a Chinese, I want to say that we breed Li Hua for hunting rats in long long history. They are the guardians of our granary. Chinese people are farmers in the most period of history, So breeding Li Hua was a good method to protect our food from rats. As for scholars in ancient China, they bred Li Hua for protecting their books from rats. If you read Chinese Ancient books, poems, articles... you would find out that many ancient Chinese scholars written poems to praise Li Hua. They even called their action that breeding Li Hua as "聘猫(pin mao)" which means “employ a cat”. They would bring some fish as wage(maybe "gift"? I don't know how to translate it properly) to the families whose mother Li Hua soon give birth to some little Li Hua, then they breed the little Li Hua for hunting rats.(fish is for mother Li Hua, not the families) As for some people say that Li Hua is "just a stray cat, cheap and very common." I don't mean to object, from my point of view, Li Hua is natural evolved cats, They do not have any genetic defects or some inevitable diseases. so they are very healthy and robust. we feed them what we eat, so they are just to easy to feed(may be this is the reason why they are cheap and common). And the nice skill that hunting rats make them to feed themselves. On the other side, the relationship between we and Li Hua is more like roommates. We live with Li Hua but we not often feed them. So this is another feature of Li Hua --- they are not clinging, like other cats such as Maine Coon, Ragdoll. Some times it's not we want them stray, it's their own choice. They are liberal. if they want to cling to you, they do it, and if they want to stray, they stray. I love the personality of Li Hua, they live for their own.

I'm not sure about what they said in the video, I don't think Chinese people think this cat is a national treasure, it's just a common cat nobody pays money for it. these cats get along with dog very well because they TOTALLY DOMINATE dogs......they are soooo good at fighting that they can beat the sh*t of most dogs.... and they are so nice they would share their pray with you...... don't ask me how i come to know this
I adopted one from the Oregon Humane Society in September of last year. I didn't know she was this breed, just a tabby. She's large for 8.5 months but my vet assures me she is not over weight. Her name is Camille and I adore her. She had been adopted and returned by the time I adopted her at 7 weeks. My part Abyssinian 2.5 year old female Marley, still hisses at her and I hope at some point she gets along with Camille.
I own a cat of this breed (I got her from my cousins) and my mom is for some reason convinced she’s a Mainecoon tabby mix. I got her because where she was staying the cousin of mine that actually took care of her had moved to Connecticut and she was left with my two older cousins who really didn’t bother with her so she would often eat out of her food bag leading her to gain weight. And then they (and by they I mean my cousins and their mom) decide they were going to take her to the shelter to find somebody the take care of her so they brought her to my house so we can watch her for a few days until they find a place for her to live. And suddenly my grandma got a soft spot for cats (which she normally doesn’t a soft spot for) and decides to keep her! So now I have a new cat running around my house and she’s the biggest sweetheart I have ever met :)
Last week i had saved a baby stray cat, that's Li Hua, he is so cute, adorable. His mother births four baby cats (including him), but unfortunatly...one was dead when birth, one was dead in hunger and, another was disappeared, mother cat seems don't want feed the last baby anymore because baby cat's nails was too long to hurts her breast. He is so tiny to take care of himself, so i picked it home and feed it then, that's day he only two week-year-old. Now he growing up, he is so lovely and handsome, i love him so much.
Life is good as long as Andrea Arden is teaching me about cats! Of course I need to be retaught them over and over to make sure I retain such information!

By checking the comments, I find that many people adopted this kind and thought it a tabby or other breeds cuz LiHua is not common oversea. But in China, you are able to see them in the streent or near your home, hunting birds, mice or even looking through the trash. Some of them still look well even though they are on the road.
I actually have one didn't know he was. Until I watch cats 101. I got them from the local animal shelter just before they were about to put him down when he was a kitten.
I had the same cat since I was a baby. You don't really take care of it. My mom brought the baby cat home and just fed it some left over. It can take care of the family. It can catch the mice in the barn of rice. It can jump to 5.5 meter high to catch a rat. Sometimes it stole the neighbor fish back home. My mom didn't dare told the neighbor because she scare the neighbor would kill him. The cat ran all over the village by itself. You don't need to follow it. It came back home by himself. Most of the time, you even didn't need to feed it. It fed itself with a lot of rats. This cat is very friendly to our chicken, duck, rabbit, geese. It is not a pet but a smart helper. It lived with us for more than 8 years. Then we moved to city and bough the cat to city with us. Just 3 days, it was loss. We found everywhere and can not found it any more. All of us was crying for a few days. Until now I still felt very sad when thinking about my cat.

The video doesn’t give a very good description. One defining characteristic is the pattern of the coat. They don’t have stripes like a regular tabby. It’s more like a curvy scale pattern, between stripes and spots. And they are respected though I’ve never heard of cat weddings. I have two that I rescued here in china (born to a stray) and my vet was very excited to tell me all about the Lihua. They a very intelligent. Mine love to play fetch and are very social. They growl to let me know when someone is at the door. They aren’t aggressive. They don’t scratch or bite. They’re just great cats.

Same here. So similar to a mackerel or spotted brown domestic tabby. I guess the difference is probably the head shape and "lack of neck." My shelter cat has the same markings and colours with a spotted back. I love how his markings are so symmetrical.

Just because you have a painting that looks like a Picaso doesn't mean you have an authentic Picaso. If you have a Li Hau Cat you have to have proof!!! As in Registration! You can't go by outward appearance alone. These cats have different personalities from regular street cats for the most part. Li Hau's have Big heads, thick necks & are very big boned animals.

I wouldn't be able to distinguish this cat from a similarly colored domestic short hair in North America. There is little, if anything distinct about its appearance. Maybe I could better appreciate the Li Hua if Andrea Arden brought one to my house. Or came alone. The essential part is Andrea dropping by for a visit.

The pattern, attitude, whiskers, eyes, build, and color. Unless there is a breed that is physically identical to the Chinese Li Hua, the cat I own must be one.

My wife found it as a small kitten in the middle of a major roadway. We knew it was more than a normal gray tabby.

The pattern, attitude, whiskers, eyes, build, and color. Unless there is a breed that is physically identical to the Chinese Li Hua, the cat I own must be one.
