  • Today Uncle Stonnie is out and about on a training and socialization session with Luke, the Curly Coated Retriever, two Labrador Retriever puppies, and of course our favorite mentor dog, Mr. NoName.
    In this video we introduce Luke to an off leash farm environment and test the perception that Curly Coated Retrievers are natural water dogs.
    We hope you guys enjoy!

      I noticed Luke seemed to move good when he was actually interested in something. The way he had his nose to the ground for awhile reminded me of Hound dogs.

    No Name getting to be the star today, and get dad's praise as well. Those pups seem eager to learn how to be like Uncle No Name, and Luke appears to just be in need of learning what a dog is and what's going to help him to be a good dog. He seemed to like the idea of learning a game, and to do so with good manners amongst the pack and people. Never met a dog that didn't like rolling in some wild/exotic poop. LOL... knuckleheads. Extra ice cream for "camera man", she's a trooper and a champ.

    Well, Luke is very handsome dog. He appears well mannered with the pack. I agree, it looks like he just needs a little socialization and some learning.
    I’d love to see more of this handsome breed.

    Love to see a curly video, many thanks! I have mother and daughter curly. They are definitely guarding and should not be compared to a Labrador in that regard. During their first year they were suspicious to strangers. If you have a Rottweiler and pretend it’s a Labrador when strangers rush forward to greet, it’s no surprise if a biting accident happens, for reference.

  • @macabeal8887
    @macabeal8887 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

    My experience is that curly is a medium energy dog, not like the field bred lab which is obvious in the video. There are field lines in the breed, but not the division field-show. It’s a Velcro dog! Extremely loving! The fur: a good, proper fur dries quickly, low maintenance. But there are coat issues in the breed: thin coat, bald patches. There seems to be a correlation between thick, good coat and outdoor time. In Sweden we have a curly breeder living in the northern part, and they manage -40 degree Celsius.

    I appreciate the water depth acclamation tip. We live on lake superior in Michigan, There is a body of water within 6 minutes from wherever you are in this state.
    Water safety is important.
    We have an old black lab and a golden retriever pup. Our 10 year old dachshund passed away in the fall. She couldn't swim. She tried a few times and ended up flipping over like a dead fish every time.
    She didn't like the water so I didn't push her. We moved here from NJ a few years ago so the lake was new to her. But I worried about her water survival skills. Lake Superior can act like the ocean at times, it isn't calm and peaceful all the time.

    My long-haired golden retriever x Weimaraner learned to swim chasing ducks. I tried everything but he wouldn’t go out of his depth. Walking along our local canal one evening some ducks came past and I heard a splash and turned to see my Charlie ploughing through the water like a pro! He was 7 months old.

    Dear Stonnie. I am a subscriber many years ago. Around 8-9 years. Or longer. I can’t remember. But I watched your videos although I didn’t had a dog. Now I have a 5 year old ridgeback.
    Yesterday I remembered a video from you. A calm and emotion video. Where you also kayak with your dog last minutes and you spoke some nice words about your Labrador. I think it was dog you do give away. I don’t know. And the last 20-40 seconds there was just a song. Country. Very emotional. About someone who lives in the same city/village as father and grandpa. And working hard family. Never got out of town. Something about drinking a hot coffee. I hope I remember right. I loved this song and your video. As I remember it was a longer video.
    And the song. Singing by a woman. Country like.
    I miss this song. I can’t remember and can’t find the video on your list.
    I cried watching you with your dog.
    Maybe you can help me.
    Greetings from Germany 🇩🇪

    Not all curlies are stranger friendly, and they are most certainly not a lab or friendly lab or flat coat. In the breed standard it mentions they can be aloof, it doesn't mean afraid. But pushing people on them can definitely lead to biting. They also can be protective, those together will most certainly lead to biting given the chance, I've had one. First time he bit was at a retriever trainers, and I'll say it wasn't even 100% his fault as a "stranger" someone he never met entered his kennel even when he warned with barking and hackles..

      It seems like CurlyCoat Bloodlines may have very pronounced differences in terms of temperament.
      I wonder how many CCRs who seem fearful, aggressive, etc…simply did not have proper socialization and training during their formative developmental stages?

    Stonnie, I love your content, but I think the dog I’m raising is a bigger fan. When he hears your voice, he comes running and sits by my side and cocks his head as if to ask, “is that Stonnie?” Then, when blow your whistle, he runs across the house and sits at his food bowl, waiting for me to release him for dinner. I have to move fast, otherwise the pool of drool in front of the bowl becomes a hazard.

    Always a pleasure to see dogs free running. Here in Germany a regulation called "Leinenpflicht" (leading the dog with a leach) even in the woods or in open terrain, becomes big and bigger. People or dogs, the space of freedom is getting small and smaller.

    • @StonnieDennis
      @StonnieDennis  4 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      Yes, many European countries seem to be heavy on regulation and short on common sense as it relates to personal autonomy.
      It’s a very sad situation and there are certain interested parties that are pushing the same agendas in the United States.

      We live in Southern Arizona US. I have a female black field lab who is now two. Brynlie has sooooo much energy. She loves being free of the leash. Arizona has a law that says your dog has to be on 6 foot leash at all times except in a dog park. This includes nature areas, parks, mountain trails and public park lakes. I have desert trails outside my back door and the mountains are 15 min away. Mostly retired people here who love to tattle. I used to let my dog roam free on the trails. We rarely run into anyone until one day I managed to run into a couple. Brynlie was off leash but came back immediately when I ] leashed her. The couple informed me that there is a $500- 5000 fine to have your dog off leash. They threatened to turn me in. I no longer go on off leash adventures with me dog. Restrictions are in place everywhere.

      @@summergirl2782 It is hard to believe. I was only once in USA and I admired the amazing nature, wide open areas without any person. A country to be free, in many relations, and sure also for dogs. Greetings from germany.
