Probably the most eloquent discussion I’ve seen/heard explaining how momentous of a time we’re living in and its parallels with the past.

Hello Jonathan. This is not a comment specific to your extremely informative interview with DW, but there are a couple of facts related to the Ukraine war that I rarely if ever hear mentioned. First of all, President Zelensky is more than a former comedic actor. To the best of my knowledge, he is also a lawyer. Prior to entering show business, he received a degree in international law. I think that sheds an interesting light on how he has conducted his duties as a wartime president. Second, in all the speculation about what exactly caused Speaker Mike Johnson to change his mind and allow a vote on the Ukraine support bill, there is one motive that I haven't heard mentioned. In the press interviews in which he made the announcement, he said that in the fall of 2024 his son will be starting his studies at the U.S. Naval Academy, and he didn't want his son to be sent off to war upon his graduation in four years.
Thanks, again, for your fantastic work, Jonathan. Slava Ukraini! Haroim Slava!

The parallels seemed so obvious to me, thank you for confirming I'm not crazy. Disregard the buckets like communism, fascism, oligarchy, just look at the behaviour of Hitler and Putin.

My parent’s generation were soldiers and sailors in WW2, so for me, the stories of those times I heard a lot. I am in my 70s, so when we are gone, it is going to be written history only.

I agree that on both sides of the culture wars, that seem to divide our societies and are being exploited by our enemies, there is a reluctance to accept any responsibility for the division. If that is the point D W Philips is making. Although I have to say the division seems to be on steroids in the US compared to the UK. There are loud voices on the extremes of the debate, particularly online, but almost everybody I meet in daily life is not particularly exercised by the issues. It did not pay a significant part in the recent election.

One problem with conservatives constantly quoting Regan, is that they risk constantly looking back in doing so; while keeping the past in mind one needs to look and plan forward while buidling on the foundations that were laid in the past. Why an anti Western element has become so prominent in the West - espeically at the university level - on both the so called right and left, is likely due to our refusal to recognize our enemies' disinformation warfare against our societies. Having moved in the anti warfare religious sections of North American society in my past, I still do get the drive to disengage from international interventions and as long as religion is allowed to be a "don't touch area of discussion" you need to expect that section of society to grow stronger as it is a bit of a safe space where, often non religious, people can avoid making tough choices.
