One fact that I don't see mentioned often, is that although they are critically endangered in the wild, they are _plentiful_ in captivity, which is why you can buy one so cheap.

@Kat The Cat They are under threat of pollution and invasive predators in the wild. Also due to their popularity as pets causing inbreeding, many axolotls are susceptible to disease in captivity.

That is because they are neotenic! Which means (in their case as salamanders) that they stay in their larval stage for their whole life and never leave the water.

I have two golden glow gene axolotls and they don’t move very much only when they are hungry. Their tank also has to stay at a colder temperature so if you live somewhere warm you need to buy a chiller which is expensive. They also get themselves stuck in the oddest positions. Sometimes if they take on too much air they float on the surface and look like they are dead because they will fall asleep like that. The water quality is wonky a lot because they are messy so you have to check for ammonia, nitrite and nitrate at least every second day. You also have to do a 25 percent water change each week. They also might bite you if they think your finger is a worm, not that it would hurt anyways. They are cute but not a very active pet.

There are probably millions of them in captivity, so luckily they're most likely not going to disappear from the face of the Earth.
I do have two of my own, a second time axolotl mom, but we should still preserve what is still left of the wild.
Pink axolotls are breed in captivity while black axolotls are found in the wild as much pink axolotls are not the type we should focus on saving its the black axolotls there wild cousins

If it makes you feel better, they're only endangered in the wild. They're really easy to breed, so there are MILLIONS in captivity
They're basically instinct in the wild cause of polutions and their very specific water needs. I got one though and they're definitelly not hard to get, fairly common as they breed a lot

Axolotls are very cute animals, and indeed they make for great pets, but please, if you're considering adopting one as a pet, you have to consider many things:
1. They are a critically endangered species and are near extinct in the wild. Actually, importing them is illegal in many countries and in the US is illegal to own one in many states. Please review your country or state's laws to see if you can actually own one.
2. Even though they are very resilient animals and have a wonderful ability to regenerate, they have very specific temperature and aquarium chemistry requirements that you have to learn about and consider before even taking your new axolotl home. Many axolotls have died horrible deaths because people don't learn about their needs.
3. Although they are predators and can be fed many types of food, it's best if you learn first what kinds of food are best for axolotls. They're salamanders, not fish, so their dietary needs are diferent from the majority of aquarium animals. They will also swallow anything smaller than their mouths, so you have to be careful about their decorations.
Having said that, I'm really happy that people are now aware that these cute little fellas exist and want to make them part of their lives. Just learn as much as you can about them and help them recover their habitat, and if you want to have one at home, make sure they are as comfortable as possible.

Fun fact: Toothless (how to train your dragon) was based on these adorable little animals! I have about 18 as my dad taught me how to breed when I was 5 (I'm 11 now, looking after a bunch) so I'm trying to stop them from going extinct, they are Apollo cut, I was waiting for this!

In mannerisms and bodily structure he was actually based off of cats, I know that from experience lol. But I can see some resemblance with the head shape there, so it's completely possible the creators took some inspiration from that too. Nonetheless they're still absolutely adorable :)

My spouse and I are feeding a couple young deer too, their Mother got killed by a car, more than a year ago. Now we have 10 deer, coming in shifts, to our yard almost nightly. Now we are feeding lots of wildlife, since we fed the deer. I love caring for others, and plan to continue caring for many years to come. When I can't give any more, I won't want to Live.
