The hair knot in Asian culture is used a lot back in the day and specifically for japanese culture, the samurai would only cut their knots when they retire or losing their high status. In this case, yes Iroh and Zuko are changing, but it's also the loss of their status as royals and citizens of the Fire Nation, knowing full well they are now fugitives.
I love how Azula comes onto the show and immediately makes her presence known. Threatening her crew, bending lightning, outclassing and manipulating Zuko. Masterclass first showing.
Her introduction was what made me finally give up on the Netflix show. She is, as you said, supposed to be terrifying. But there I only found her annoying.
Only a very small percentage of firebenders can bend lightning. It is pretty rare. Iroh redirected lightning on the ship in 1x12, "The Storm", and again with Azula in 2x1 "The Avatar State". "Azul" means "blue" in Spanish and Portuguese. Azula's fire is indeed blue. Blue is the hottest part of the flame. It can be confusing in this episode, because she does both, but yes, she uses blue fire AND lightning.
"Then maybe you should stop worrying so much about the tides, who have already made up their mind about killing you, and worry more about me, who's still mulling it over" Still to this day possibly the best character introduction I've ever seen
general fung in this episode is voiced by daniel dae kim, he goes on to voice another character in the follow up series legend of korra and is also the live action ozai in the netflix series, bit of a legacy actor for this franchise
@@Gopal__Sand the character's daughter, asami, obviously, was voiced by the actress seychelle gabriel, who played princess yue in the movie we dont talk about... so between the both of them the sato family have actually been in every incarnation of this franchise
When Zuko and Iroh cut their hair, it’s actually a tradition for Japanese samurai to cut their hair (top knot, same as them) when they are banished from the lord they serve. When they cut their top knot, it represents losing their status and privilege afforded as serving samurai and become ronin who are considered disgraced. The fire nation in general is very Japanese based (like the earth kingdoms are Chinese based), so the way they incorporate some of these traditions is incredible. That moment really touched me. The symbolism of letting go of your past and all of that is also valid, it’s just this has a direct parallel to the more traditional symbolism.

I love how you explained Azula's character even though ya'll just meet her. The backstories will def answer some of your questions, can't wait for ya'll to react to more!
Azula is the villain that makes this series as close to perfect as you can get. She is everything Admiral Zhao wanted to be. She is intelligent, conniving, dedicated, extremely well skilled, two steps ahead of you, and merciless. She instantly commands fear and a strange feeling of respect. The respect is not for what she does. It's the same healthy respect you'd feel for the power and ferocity from a tiger right before it rips out your throat. You'll love to hate her. She's not using lightning all the time. Her flames are blue because her flames are hotter than everyone else. The blue part of fire is the hottest art of the fire. Cutting off the top knot is a real life thing. If it's done to you you have been cut off from family or country. If you do it yourself you are cutting ties with family or country. They are truly alone now. The great thing about this episode with regards to Aang and the group and the Earth King guy is everyone is right. If they could poke Aang into the Avatar state it would save countless lives. But, Aang also needs to do it right. Two things can be true even if they oppose each other.
The show wanted admiral to not be as good as he's was supposed to be cos of he was zuko would have be died or imprisoned by zhao and he story of redemption wouldn't have happened, even firelord ozai people think he's a fraud cos we didn't see him display he fire bending power and how powerful he really was but the story prevents that so that the protagonist and he crew gets to shine , I believe if the show ozai killing iroh , and other prominent benders and personally taking on missions successfully we the audience will say how did the make the villain so powerful, strong and manipulative
I believe the blue fire is not (just) a matter of heat, it's also burning more purely and completely. So it kind of doubly shows her obsession with perfection that even her firebending is "more perfect" than the regular red flames.
The Siege of the North is not actually Azula’s first appearance. We first see her standing next to Iroh at Zuko’s agni kai against Ozai. Also standing next to Iroh is Zhao. So there is a fan theory that Zhao is actually Iroh and Ozai’s half-brother and Azulon’s bastard son. Because why would Zhao be sitting in what looks like a royal box. It would also make sense why Zhao was promoted twice in three years because remember when we first see Zhao, Iroh thinks he is still a captain, not a commander. But in the fire nation that would actually be okay because in the Kyoshi novels, we learn that in Fire Nation nobility it is okay for women to have children out of wedlock as long as it’s before they get married (that’s at least how I read it). IDK if it’s still considered okay in Aang’s time but it is in Kyoshi’s time. Also, the voice of General Fong also plays Fire Lord Ozai in the Netflix live-action version.
6:53 Can I just say how much I love this stupid ceremony? It is literally some mystical mumbo jumbo you'd pull out of a hat when there's no ideas left😂
What I see you haven’t commented, that is a bit more unique than lightning, is the fact that Azula is the only one that has shown a BLUE fire bending. If you look it up, natural blue flames are hotter than orange ones

Unpopular opinion but i completely relate with the earth general actions. Him and his men fought and died everyday for the last 100 years and he just used the glimmer of hope he had to save any soldiers he can (if you ask any soldiers in 1917 or 1944 if they had to used one child temporarily to end the war immediately, most of them if not all of them will do it).
Except giving it an actual moment's thought, which someone in a tactical position should probably be good at, would reveal that the plan is completely asinine and accomplishes nothing. The guy doesn't even have a plan to get Aang to the Fire Nation capital much less a way to consistently force him into the Avatar State. And even then, the Avatar State only lasts for maybe minute at most before Aang is exhausted and sometimes knocked out; the ocean spirit koi kaiju was a special case and the spirit fully in control. Considering Ozai is the most powerful and skilled firebender in the world (and one of the best of all time), there is no guarantee that Ozai doesn't just wait out the clock. And even if he does bite it, what then? The Earth Kingdom knows how succession works; they're literally a kingdom. Azula takes the position and the war continues, only now the Avatar is dead or captured. You can empathize but it's short-sighted to the point of idiocy. Not to mention active gaslighting and guilt-tripping and full willingness to send a 12 year old into a 99% death scenario and harm his friends to force his compliance - at that point, my empathy is lost.
But the entire point is that Aang couldn't control it. As of this episode, Aang in the Avatar State is a nuclear bomb, he'll destroy everything in sight, friend of foe. It's also inconsistent, sometimes he only uses enough power to save himself and his friends, sometimes he'll level an entire city. Tactically and strategically speaking, General Fong was a fool, he was willing to take a stupid gamble and risk the Avatar instead of listening to the wisdom of literally every Avatar who ever lived, as they all said the Avatar must master all four elements and the Avatar State.
@@Mrryn The easy way to resolve the issue was for the gang to say to the general that Aang could only do that by being a spirit vessel (specifically the ocean spirit), which they didn't. Aang with the avatar state didn't need more than few minutes to crushed a fleet and he could easily crushed quickly the firelord in that state (which make the entire Roku's warning about the deadline in S01E08 wrong) so Aang being exhausted or knocked out after that is irrelevant. The general's plan was to invaded the fire nation capital even with Azula still alive, as long as the firelord was killed and the capital was taken, the war was over with or without Azula in the picture (and unlike the dai li soldiers, it's very unlikely for generals to obeying 14 years old teenager girl) and with an earth kingdom army who protect aang after his avatar state. Ozai will wait only if he was powerless and Aang could keep his power boost until his final battle. For the fire nation succession laws, we saw with Iroh and Zuko that there's no law set in stone. The general clearly said that he also wants to find a way for Aang to master the state (so he doesn't want ot charge blindly) and will help him to do that and we know with what happen later that Aang and any avatar past or future could do it so the plan is not asanine, it's just a guy who's tired to fight and die endlessly while a child leisurely master the elements while having a deadline and want to planify and invasion to end the war so saying that the general send Aang in a death 99% scenario is a blatant lie.
@@pabloc8808 You're right that Aang can't control it and that's why the general already that he want to help him to do it. We know that Aang will later control the avatar state (he already partially controlled it in episode 12) so him being a nuclear bomb could be resolved and was already resolved once. When you're already on the death gate everyday like the general and his men are, there's no stupid gamble and Aang already proved that he wasted the time given to him by those men when he takes waterbending teaching leisurely in the northern water tribe so it's hard to talk about Aang wisdom in this situation while he already wasted many men lives with his unseriousness attitude. The general also know that they are in the brink of defeat so there's no way to be sure that Aang could master all the elements and the avatar state in less than 9 months while the avatars usually needs years if not decades. On the other hand, the northern water tribe siege showed to the general that the avatar state give them a fair chance.
Worth mentioning with the hair thing, Along with everything you guys said about symbolism and doing it to hide their identity, there is an added layer in the way the fire nations crown is worn (pinned into the hair with a topknot kinda like iroh has) Basically showing that Zuko has accepted that he wont be wearing the crown any time soon, if ever...
I love that they used this episode bssically to call out everyone going "akshuallee he could just go in avatar state and win every battle broken character plot holes 🤓"
Wowww small world . I didnt know you guys were friends with Spartan and Pudgy . Lol ive watched their full reaction to ATLA a little bit to close to a year ago and i love their channel just as much yall channel 💯
I think the reason you don't really see Iroh use his bending a lot is because he doesn't want to unnecessarily hurt people fire is dangerous and he knows it
If more earthbenders did what the general did to Katara this episode, Earth would be the most OP element. Just instantly bury a person in solid rock. Nothing any of the other benders could do against that
Yeah no, it's far too slow and telegraphed, any bender who can actually use their element in that moment(which the main villains in ATLA virtually always can) would've simply murdered the guy there.
Irish uses firebending when he needs to in fights, but really not outside of that, because why waste the energy when he’s holding his own with hand to hand? (Well, unless there’s a hot tub or a cold cup of tea around.)
cuting your pony tail as a fire nation high ranking is like loosing your honor, it signifie they they are not worthy of respect and that have brought shame to the family's name. In this episode they do it to survive and not be chased by the fire nation but it might be worst than death in their culture
There are plenty of subbending skills in Avatar for all the elements. Season 2 & 3 would introduce a lot of these(& in Avatar The Legend of Korra, the sequel of ATLA). It's just the beginning.
General Fong gets fan-hate for pressuring Aang to use the avatar state to end the war right away, but I think somebody had to say it. Aang had just single-handedly defeated an entire Fire Nation fleet in under an hour. If the show hadn't established why it would be a bad idea to rely on that trick, ATLA would've deserved a brutal episode of "How It Should Have Ended". AANG: Oh no! The Fire Nation armies are everywhere, and if I don't stop them before Sozin's Comet arrives, the entire world will be lost! I don't know what to do! SOKKA: I have a crazy idea that just... might... work. [montage of Aang using the avatar state to defeat one Fire Nation army after the next] KATARA: Wow, Aang! You ended the whole war in less than a week! AANG: Yeah. I don't know why I was so worried.
Lightning bending actually is not a talent that only the royal family possesses. They are the only ones we see lightning bending in the show, because they are the only ones who know how or who get to learn to do it. It is difficult and dangerous to master it and everyone else either has not the means or they might even not be allowed to do it. There are other media about the world of Avatar, and there we see other firebenders being able to lightning bend. You can compare it to how rare the ability to read was back in the day. Only noble or rich people could read, even though almost every person can actually learn it.
Btw, in case you guys did not see my comment last time, skip the recap sequence as it can potentially spoil the episode. You guys have good memory anyway. Let surprises be surprises. (This is the last time I'll be commenting on this or else it can get annoying.)
I really hope you watch Legend of Korra (the sequel series made by the same people) after this. You're already asking some questions that will be answered in that show.
Idk how far y’all are in the series but its a shame that there’s an orchestra concert for ATLA in Australia so soon, I’m sure it would have been an interesting experience to have but they’re sold out and I wouldn’t want you both to get spoiled for book 3 hehe
the reason why iroh don't use his fire bending often because it will not be fair fight it will be massacre, remember iroh is long past his prime but still can bodied squadron by himself

"Daddy's Girl" vs. "Momma's Boy" lol
A great example of the hair getting cut would be Blue Eye Samurai where a character loses their hair after their first loss and seeks revenge.
I'd say book 2 and 3 are more focused as book 1 was a lot of different adventures leading up to the main plot.
Those are Royal hair wrappings if you will, so it signifies resigning the nation and the royal family.
Empiezan el mejor libro de Avatar. Me gustan sus reacciones.
Can't wait for 🍉 lord 💚✨
Worth mentioning with the hair thing, Along with everything you guys said about symbolism and doing it to hide their identity, there is an added layer in the way the fire nations crown is worn (pinned into the hair with a topknot kinda like iroh has) Basically showing that Zuko has accepted that he wont be wearing the crown any time soon, if ever...
I love that they used this episode bssically to call out everyone going
"akshuallee he could just go in avatar state and win every battle broken character plot holes 🤓"
Wowww small world . I didnt know you guys were friends with Spartan and Pudgy . Lol ive watched their full reaction to ATLA a little bit to close to a year ago and i love their channel just as much yall channel 💯
Azula's also Monster Girl in Invincible
I was drinking coffee when she said "He skipped the intro" bro, coffee just came out of my nose
my fav show all time ❤❤ excited for yall
I think the reason you don't really see Iroh use his bending a lot is because he doesn't want to unnecessarily hurt people fire is dangerous and he knows it
4:07 "passive aggressive"? No, no, Azula is very active aggressive!!! 😅😅😁😁
When i cut my braids coz i have to go back to my annual military training, yeah, i felt like losing half of myself too😂😭
11:21 Aang just went to the soul society lol
I found this channel like 2 days ago and I just subscribed! You too are so 👍 😊 ❤
If more earthbenders did what the general did to Katara this episode, Earth would be the most OP element.
I'm soooo happy you guys are watching this show and LOVING IT, just like we all do! ❤❤❤
"no one's managed to do it yet. You'd hate to be the first one " Who's gonna tell her ...😬
cuting your pony tail as a fire nation high ranking is like loosing your honor, it signifie they they are not worthy of respect and that have brought shame to the family's name. In this episode they do it to survive and not be chased by the fire nation but it might be worst than death in their culture
When season 3 wraps up, will they move to the Korra series or try reading the Avatar Darkhorse comics?
Easily azula and zuko are top tier characters from this show, it's crazy how my 1st childhood crush is azula...😂😂
Keep in mind😎😎😎
Every Episode is a LIFE LESSON 😇😇
Excited for book 2 !!
can't wait for the blind bandit!!
Yeeeess I’ve been waiting for this!! We’re getting into it now ooohhh yaaaaaaa!!!!😆😎🔥💖
SOKKA: I have a crazy idea that just... might... work.
[montage of Aang using the avatar state to defeat one Fire Nation army after the next]
KATARA: Wow, Aang! You ended the whole war in less than a week!
AANG: Yeah. I don't know why I was so worried.
Yay, been waiting for this!!!
Season two let’s go 🔥
🔥
SEASON 2
Btw, in case you guys did not see my comment last time, skip the recap sequence as it can potentially spoil the episode. You guys have good memory anyway. Let surprises be surprises. (This is the last time I'll be commenting on this or else it can get annoying.)
Azula is..... Crazy
And just like that, we are going to see epic character growth journey for Zuko and more importantly, epic hair growth journey for him!
Oh yeah😏
I really hope you watch Legend of Korra (the sequel series made by the same people) after this. You're already asking some questions that will be answered in that show.
Enter Queen Azula 🔥💙
Correction, Fire Lord Azula
Azulaaaaa 🔥🔥
GENERAL FONG TRIES TO SKIP BOOKS 1 & 2!!
It’s also an Emmy winning show which is extremely rare over here for being an animated show on a children’s network
Idk how far y’all are in the series but its a shame that there’s an orchestra concert for ATLA in Australia so soon, I’m sure it would have been an interesting experience to have but they’re sold out and I wouldn’t want you both to get spoiled for book 3 hehe
What, you think you can just not say "Hi I'm Carley, and I'm Ange" and we're not gonna notice. It's a staple of the channel. :P
Sokka's girlfriend turned into the moon.
*don't fockin' say it*
...our buddy's got it rough.
😂
Bro 😂
Azula's my favorite character. I hope as the episodes pass you guys will come to love her too. She's such a peak villain.
You are watching the best show in the West (Avatar) and the best show in the East (One Piece).
It is good time for this channel.
ATLA for the West okay, but One Piece is nowhere near the best anime, not even if we limit it to the Shonen genre alone.
buen video reaccion
Ange who do you think you are intro-ing an episode on this channel?? 😂
the reason why iroh don't use his fire bending often because it will not be fair fight it will be massacre, remember iroh is long past his prime but still can bodied squadron by himself
Yessssssss
you guys know spartan and pudgey? O_O
Azula is my baby girl, my favorite character. So well writing, complex and POWERFUL! and just a FOURTEEN year old girl. She is amazing!
❤😊
BEST GIRL AZULA APPEARED!!! 😍😍
No, there is no justifying Azula's evilness, she is just horrible!
-> Obey me or I’ll have you murdered
“She is passive aggressive”
I think she is quite active aggressive, there was nothing passive about it.
-> you’dhate to be the first one
Yes, imagine screwing up so badly that you lose knowledge and power accumulated over 10,000 years. There is really no coming back from that. Ever. Absolutely irredeemable.
lol he skipped the intro
