Weightlifting vs. Powerlifting vs. CrossFit vs. Strongman | What's the Difference?

  • When it comes to strength sports, which is best? And what's the difference anyway?
We're big fans of strength at BarBend, but it's time to clear up some misconceptions. First and foremost, not every strength sport is the same!
    Weightlifting is different than powerlifting.
    CrossFit is different than strongman.
And weightlifting, powerlifting, CrossFit, and strongman are ALL different than bodybuilding. In fact, of these four strength sports, aesthetics and appearance are NOT the main goals!
    --
Each of these sports has its own benefits and potential drawbacks. We're not saying one is necessarily better than the other. We like to respect the differences, celebrate the similarities, and educate people about both.

No, these aren't ALL strength sports available to competitors and fans. But they ARE some of the most popular, and we cover each and every one quite a bit at BarBend.com!
    --
In this video, we break down the common misconceptions and outline the differences (and some similarities!) between these four sports. What makes a weightlifting different than a powerlifter? Why don't you see athletes bench pressing in the Olympics?
We cover these questions and more in the video above!
Have another strength training or strength sport myth or misconception you'd like us to tackle? Let us know in the comments below!

They obviously juice as well but 99% of people wouldn’t have the discipline to spend 4 hours a day chewing and go hit the gym 2-3 times a day while busting their ass at work to support their passion even if they also used gear.

I realise that resistance-/weight-training is overall good for increasing bone strength and density, but even out of the three, i.e. conventional bodybuilding, weightlifting, and powertraining, which one creates the highest bone strength and density (especially in legs, hips, and spine)? I'm around mid-30s in age and have not done resistance training until now with regularity, unfortunately. So I've missed the ship of creating most bone strength. But now i want to engage in the style of resistance training that makes me strong now, and keeps me strong in my old age too with minimal orthopedic problems.

I'm biased so I'll say PowerLifting lol
But actually, I do recommend starting off with a powerlifting routine (I personally do the "nsuns 5 day program") because it'll give you the base for other lifting sports. With Powerlifting not only is it helping you build strength on 3 very popular lifts, but the accessories you do like front squats will directly translate to weightlifting and strongman. Weightlifting is a combo of squats and deadlifts, and if you deadlift is far better than your squat, then you won't be very successful for a while. So again, I recommend AT LEAST starting off with powerlifting before you branch into other areas like weightlifting or strongman. Heck, you may even like powerlifting so much that you decide to stick with it.

It's another strength sport, just fairly new, in which the athletes compete into pullups, dips and squats (although many federations still use the muscle up, since the sport comes from calisthenics, which is not a strenght lift). Streetlifting might have both a max strength 1RM test and an endurance test, where the athletes perform the highest number of reps with a given added weight.

Good looking - bodybuilding. But if you wanna improve your power and strength, do weightlifting training combined with some powerlifting training (squats and deadlift are actually a part of weightlifting training), like power snatch, power clean, or power jerk. Try to find the right techniques with low weights first! And do regular jumping (like playing basketball and jumping as high as you can to grab the rim or dunk) and sprinting workout! This will help you become more athletic! CrossFit helps you become more endurance but a lot of CF athletes don’t have the right techniques when doing strength training so their bodies are damaged a lot! So I suggest you to play soccer or do long distance running instead of doing CF (but don’t run too much since it’s bad for your knees and will reduce your muscles). Don’t try Strongman because this sport ain’t for normal people. You have to be an elite powerlifter first. Those athletes who won Strongman competition were considered the strongest men on Earth for a reason!

Generally Olympic sports need to be very cosistent judging wise. Since Strongman varies constantly and are not as well regulated it will probably never be an Olympic sport. The environment changes too much (deadlift and axle lifts and car lifts) so very hard to be consistent over time. Weightlifting changed almost nothing over decades.

I have explained to people for years that weightlifting and powerlifting are classified as two different sports even though they are similar, and the objective is the same. Lift as much weight as you can. Weightlifting competition consists of the snatch along with the clean and jerk. Powerlifting competition consists of the squat, bench press and the deadlift. Weightlifters do some of the powerlifting lifts in training, but it comes down to what we all do in the competition meets. I explain this to people, and it goes in one ear and out the other! It drives me up a wall! People use to ask me: Are you still weightlifting? I have given up and tell them; NO AND I NEVER DID! It bugged me! I think the best analogy would be with baseball and softball. Both sports are very similar, but yet they are DIFFERENT with two separate classifications. I want people to know the difference because I think it's important that people know our true identity on the platform.

CrossFit just involves shitty form, extreme ignorance and poor training. It’s also a joke. They aren’t even close to being on the same level of Olifters and powerlifters. Also incredibly dangerous….and a cult
