John Deere Gator 620i Fuel Pump

  • Assembly of John Deere Gator for the replacement of fuel pump. Started the project due to the back log in my local shops. The service areas were nice enough to give some guidance.
    This will be my first posting and already see some thing to change. Sorry, for the bad lighting and sound.

    Thanks sir for this video. My 2007 model just started
    buzzing within last couple of months. Glad to know its just the fuel pump.
    However, think I will let a shop do the repair for time sakes.

    Thank You! Came here because I couldn't get it to re prime after changing it out. Instead of removing the big plastic piece under the seats to get to access that one bolt, I drilled a hole through the plastic with a step bit and was able to access the bolt that way.

    Mr. Cobb , I got my fuel pump and both fuel filters installed successfully . The 18mm bolts on that back rail were hard to get loose but I used a bar over my ratchet for extra leverage and was able to crack em loose .The fuel pumps for these Gators has been re-designed since you did yours . They are supposed to have been improved and they do look to be built a little better . They are not black now , they are metal or stainless now . They are also longer , so I had to modify for that by cutting an inch off the fuel line going into the pump from the gas tank side . It is slightly bigger around as well , so I had to modify the mounting strap by bending it just right so I could get the bolt to start and then go on . It was kinda tough going as I never did a fuel pump replacement on mine . I had to replace a few plastic clips too as I messed up a few taking the lines off the big filter on the frame and then the one clip at the engine attachment . Also had to replace one of the plastic push plugs that holds the filter to the frame as it was bad . Once all that was done , putting it all back together was not bad . No more humming noise and it's running good . Wanted to thank you again for the video , it saved me a lot of money by doing it myself and your video is what made it possible . My tractor was filling in for my Gator until I had the time to fix it . So glad to have it back , life is easier with it . Oh , I had been having an issue with loosing coolant over time . While I had it apart I noticed that a water line was loose so I tightened that up . Checked it after running it a while and the leaking around the clamp looks to have stopped . I have a bad relay too that's gonna have to be replaced . The one that lowers the electric dump . The one that raises the bed works fine but the other one clicks and won't lower the bed . I had to remove the unit until I can fix it later . Have a good summer and I hope your Gator is still doing good . Thanks Man !

      You said both fuel filters installed. Where is the second one. I know about the one after the pump.

    Great instructions. Don't you think that JD could have put an access hole in the plastic (above the bolt holding fuel pump) that would have made the fuel pump replacement considerably easier?

      An access hole would have been nice. It would have been just mechanics labor hours. putting it where the filter and using a different shaped filter would have been great. If you know the fuel pressure, then running an small auto pump would have been cheaper and by pass the old pump.

    Great Video . Just wondering Mr Cobb , did you put in a new fuel filter ? The little one that goes just before the fuel pump on the fuel tank side ? I have a 2010 with the fuel pump gone bad . I was thinking since it's such a pain having to take all that stuff off before installing the new pump , that it might be a good idea to put in a new small filter as well . Thanks

      Rick Brooks I think I did. I keep some of the small filters in the toolbox for other lawn mowers/ATVs. The larger filter had been replaced within the year. Hoped, the video helped.

      I do not remember being sprayed when disconnecting the fuel lines. Down stream of the pump, there is only the fuel in the lines. Use a rag around the junctions you are separating. The fuel filter will hold a little more fuel. I will look at my Gator later today.

    Great job just wish you would have showed how to disconnect the snap lock on the fuel line, does it slid, press, or pull out, I can't seem to get it loose no matter how I work on it and don't want to break it,, to reassemble is no problem, getting it disconnected and off is a pain in, well.

      Jump Start we've tried to get them off several different ways, you just can't get them off without breaking them.

      Use a small screwdriver to pry the clip out a little or out, then you can separate the pieces. The clip are like latches and snap over the bulge in the tube/filter housing. Ford has them in a lot of places. The auto parts stores also carry them in may sizes (kit). I have also broke them, popped them across the garage and lost them.

    How did you diagnose a faulty pump? Did it whine or quit pumping altogether?

      The unit whined. While running, use your hand over the hose in the area of the whining. It should change the tone ( a method to locate the noise). I also could feel the vibration on the noisy pump. Can’t remember if the pump plug is easy reach: unplug to stop the noise.

      Reginald Cobb trying to figure out why my dad’s keeps dying, then runs fine for awhile, then dies. Fuel pump was whining then finally gave up the ghost lol. Guess I’ll be ordering one. He’s had nothing but issues. Think it was a bad pump from the factory.
