Be Attentive to Yourself - Homily by St. Basil the Great

  • "Be attentive to yourself, lest an unlawful word come to be hidden in your heart" (Deut 15:9). This text serves as the basis for St. Basil's exhortation to be focused on ourselves and our sins, not the cares of this world or the sins of our brother. With beautiful imagery and inspired insight, this homily teaches us the importance of attending to every thought, for it is the mind first that harbors secret sins and it is the Great Physician that is ready to heal us.
    St. Basil the Great is known as one of the three Holy Hierarchs of Cappadocia, along with St. John Chrysostom and St. Gregory the Theologian. We commemorate St. Basil on January 1st and 30th.
    This is a reading of the following sermon: www.orthodoxprayer.org/Articl...
    This channel is dedicated to sharing the prayers, hymns, teachings, and service texts of the Eastern Orthodox Church. Glory to Jesus Christ!

    An imperative excellent necessity for the sanctification of the soul. May our souls be pure before we meet the afterlife and the Second Advent of our beloved redeemer.

    St. Basil is one of the Saints who reached the top and tenth rank of Sainthood holiness.

      Are there really ranks of sainthood? Where does that notion come from? I'm not familiar with it.

    • @BegoMekerTube2127
      @BegoMekerTube2127 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@vaska1999 Yes all Saints are not of the same rank. You can see it as a level where the Saints will need to pass through. It may not be the same for all the Saints but there is some kind characteristics each level will have. It is divided into 10 level. The first level is where the Saint will be learning and reaching the virtue of silence. The second level, They will start having understanding in their heart, will start to pray with understanding and will not be tired while praying. Then, will start to have tears of repentence. This is not like a small tear, rather will just flow from their eyes and cleaning their heart. Then, will be having a loving heart to love all. Start to know things of future and what is happening in other places or another person's lives. Then, will be starting to see angels in heaven. Lastly even their bodies will be like a fire for demons or small insects. St. Ephrem the Syrian visited St. Basil and one of the signs he saw was an insect was burned while flying near St. Basil. I know the whole concept is really far from our reality because we are very sinful. God's grace to the Saints and the whole humanity is really great. www.johnsanidopoulos.com/2011/01/relationship-of-st-ephraim-syrian-and.html#:~:text=Saint%20Ephraim%2C%20who%20was%20a,and%20speaking%20in%20his%20ear.

      My prayers are with you for I also fought and lost this intergenerational battle time and time again for many years. Things changed when, by God’s grace, I came to understand that I had to properly cleanse my mind and purify my heart: incessant prayer and fasting a couple of times a week was very powerful and effective in this respect. So, petition your Heavenly Father with incessant prayer, call on Christ and beg of Him to strengthen you to the point of denying yourself (also submitting your will and passion via fasting) so that you might come before Him and His gentle yoke in full submission. From experience I can tell you that the “choker-chain”, which are you referring to is your own will… As long as you rely on yourself, even if just in part, rather than on Him, your struggle will remain a constant two-steps-forward-one-step-back. So, submit to Him in all ways, all things, and He will give you exactly what you need, through the working of the Holy Spirit, to win the fight. Therefore call on your God without fail (I recommend diligent practice of the Jesus Prayer at all times), submit to Him humbly, and behold the enemy will scatter before you. Anger and rage are really symptoms of pride and the lack of humility - feeling wronged, crossed or challenged can only be thwarted by the lowly, gentle heart of Christ. God bless you and all of our prayers are with you!

      I’d start at ccel.org and newadvent.org for a large group of early Church writings. I don’t recommend the non-Orthodox writings on these two websites, but everything pre-schism should be good. Let me know if you are looking for something else.

    @16:00 Well actually visualization is a proven method of goal actualization so he is verifiably wrong here. And it’s actually the work of an active mind, so Basil’s inverse proposition is actually indolence. Unfortunate.
