    Princess and the Frog had a nice twist on this narrative. While it had the street-smart rebel boy, Tiana's arc was pretty much a total reversal of most common Disney princesses. She wants "Something More", but learns that trying to get that "Something More" is ignoring all the good she already has. This is why it's my favorite Disney movie.

    I think I’ve just discovered why people ship Judy and Nick. The plot to their movie is literally a mirror image of tangled, which is a love story on purpose. No wonder we’re all speculative and confused when the writers insist they’re not in love. They’re not, guys! We didn’t write it that way! Honest!

    • @hobomike6935
      @hobomike6935 3 ปีที่แล้ว +37

      That movie was clearly intended for furries, of course they’re going to ship the thick rabbit with the attractive fox.
      Disney knew what they were doing. Furries are regular customers of theirs

    • @TheCorty
      @TheCorty 3 ปีที่แล้ว +23

      How's it any more of a mirror image than the rest of the movies listed in the disney formula? Rapunzel wasn't motivated to go outside by a sense of justice iirc, and for Judy it isn't a single person holding her back, but a species-ist system.
      In the case of Judy and Nick, there's a few rivals-to-lovers tropes that create chemistry between them. A cynical and confident character (hereby named Nick for short) that can initially run circles or trick the plucky protagonist (hereby Judy), but is impressed by their perseverence. The sass from Nick toes the line between patronizing and flirtatious... when Judy goes out of her way to prove herself worthy of respect, it can seem more personal because that much effort in a response gives the partially flirtatious comment attention.... especially since proving that to the world is Judy's goal in the first place, and even more so when Judy adds icing to the cake by flipping and sending the patronizing/flirtatious comment back to Nick. Banter is the stuff of close friends and people hitting on eachother. So when two characters start doing that as strangers, and form a close bond that's going hand in hand with their character arcs? There's usually a romantic theme there.

  • @thalloutboy
    @thalloutboy 3 ปีที่แล้ว +861

    Honestly, the best Disney movies are the ones that loosely follow the same formula but change a few important details, just enough to surprise the audience and point the story in a slightly different direction.
    For instance, Mulan follows most of the same story beats, but it diverges in some important areas. Mulan joins the army because if she didn’t, her aging, wounded father would have been conscripted (so her motivations differ from the Disney norm). Mulan is forced to become a strong, elite soldier because her life is on the line, not because she has any real desire to pursue this grand adventure she’s on. The male co-lead is a disgraced guardian dragon who breaks the standard archetype for a Disney male co-lead (he’s goofy, ride or die, and never splits from Mulan at any point in the story; that being said, the captain partly fills the place of a stereotypical male co-lead). Her being discovered as a woman falls right into the formula, but her split from the group plays out much better than in other movies because of the tension leading into that moment (she spends most of the movie avoiding that very scenario, and there are close calls leading up to that moment, so the audience expects it to happen at some point). It doesn’t just happen out of nowhere. Speaking of “happening out of nowhere”, there is no twist villain in Mulan, which is a blessing in hindsight.

    And don't forget the trope that the parent of the main protagonist is so hard and overbearing on them is because their SO either died due to a disease or an accident, thus making the parent more cautious and anxious, causing them to be overprotective of their child.
    At the midpoint of the movie, the parent either catches up to the protagonist and tries to bring them back home, or starts to turn around and be less anxious, thus warming up to their child.

I also think that a quick moldable base plot would be a quick and good cash grab for a large movie company.

    I kept flip-flopping between Tangled and Zootopia but this also kind of made me realize that Frozen, of all movies lmao, seems to twist the formula the most. Anna's not exactly forbidden from leaving the castle and her dream is not to have something bigger, but she's simply looking forward to finding someone to connect with; she doesn't set out on adventure to follow a dream (unless we take her dream to reconnect with her sister as such) but to help her kingdom; Kristoff needs some convincing but he doesn't trick her, doesn't make it difficult and they don't really bump heads since they share a common goal; when they do separate, it's not over a disagreement and it's instead because their journey was halted due to Anna's declining health. Finally, the conflict is resolved by Anna alone and her happily ever after comes not exactly by ending with the guy, but by fulfilling her dream of connecting with others AND reconnecting with her sister.
    I feel like there's something comforting about knowing there's a formula anyway, and no movie is ever executed the same at any rate. Sure, if you dissect it to its barest essentials, you'll get a funny skeleton of basics that could apply to all disney movies, but no journey ever plays the same and no characters react to the situations the same so the soul of each film will always remain unique no matter how "formulaic" we feel Disney movies can be.

At the most tension moment, the protagonist would be tempted to surrender but a friend would support him, so he goes with his new friends to the last and more important misión of the movie, where with his new skills and friendships he would find the power to win, and in a way that probably the protagonist didn’t expected from the beginning, he’ll finally had that approval and sense of acceptance he always wanted

      '80s Disney actually didn't have much of a standard formula, which is part of the reason why I like it so much. The early '90s felt kind of the same way (though, perhaps, not to the same extent). It wasn't until the mid-90s that Disney started to get formulaic. Honestly, now that I think about it, the formulaic approach is a relatively recent phenomenon. Walt's movies weren't really all that formulaic, either, in hindsight. The only thing formulaic about some of them (and that's more due to circumstance than anything else) is that they came out as "package" features around the '40s or so.

      Tropes become tropes for a reason.
      We have fun pointing out similar waves a lot of stories tread, but we can't act like familiarity is an intrinsic flaw.
      The CinemaSins school of thought would be to deduct points every time we get a scene we've "seen before", but it's much better to do a predictable story that flows and is well constructed, than to force a left turn just for sake of being different.

      You could consider the misinterpretation of what an act of true love is. Or that Kristof despite his own feelings for Anna felt she would never feel the same for him since she has a fiancé and that leaving her at the castle would be for the best. Either way, it’s a somewhat contrive miscommunication.

    I'll be honest. At the start of the video, I literally crossed off some Disney movies like Rapunzel (Flynn rarely got on her for adventuring) or Cinderella (her parental figures didn't do it for her own safety nor a song) or Tiana (parental figures who?). Then the montage of growing up rules out a lot of movies. While I see what you're getting at, cut some parts out and the formula is perfect.

    These plots are kinda cliche but I enjoy them. Like when the protagonist is in a middle of a fight scene and his ally jumps in and says,"I bet you weren't expecting me here" it's awesome everytime

    I don't see anything wrong with this procedure. There is always a skeleton of structure a story shoots off from. A guideline every one follows. It's not necessarily about the structure, but more about what you do with it. You can not only use use tropes and cliches well if you have otherwise developed material, you can use them to your advantage. I think it's more fun and challenging to create unique and engaging ideas within and around an established structure than to avoid it entirely.

      Exactly. Many other movies use this formula, but in good movies it feels natural. The steps mentioned in the video can be achieved with logic and realistic actions, in such a way that it doesnt feel forced or formulaic.

    The saddest thing about all this is that this is a good formula, like, it's the same story but that story is well refined and comes out really good almost every single time.
    The issue is not storytelling here (if anything this formula is a lesson on good storytelling) but the fact that it's been overused. I want Disney to find something else and I don't even care if it's as good as this formula, I just want something fresh.

    3rd movie is where the character realizes they're getting old and need to come to terms with it.

  • @bctalicorn809

    Tangled is by far the best of this formula. Something about it feels so much more organic than the other times they've attempted to recycle it. Frozen and Moana in particular make the formula feel so forced. The fact that Moai has a sudden change of heart off-screen is just such lazy writing to me and I didn't buy it at all. It's when the formula really started to outstay its welcome. Zootopia does a really good job with it though, makes it feel fresh because that's only half the focus of the movie, the other half is on the constant visual gags and completely unique world setting, with an ongoing investigation as the main plot. It helps that it's not a musical, makes it stand out a bit more. Also, the themes it covers feel much more mature than their other movies, and I appreciate it.
