Star Wars: Shrinking The Story World
The current state of the Star Wars franchise has become a prominent topic in internet discussion. With the Obi-Wan Kenobi series having just concluded its first season, I thought it would be an appropriate time to talk about the biggest problem I've found to be consistently plaguing the brand.
This video contains SPOILERS for basically any onscreen Star Wars content, including Obi-Wan Kenobi (2022).

The Disney Formula
มุมมอง 284K4 ปีที่แล้ว
Ever seen a Disney movie? This plot might sound familiar... This is not meant as serious criticism. I love all (most) of these movies when taken on their own, and this is meant as a harmless, fun exercise in plot structure analysis. Films used: Tangled (2010) Frozen (2013) Zootopia (2016) Moana (2016)

Quick reminder that Zootopia and Moana have almost exactly the same plot

About the twist villain trope which many people complain about, it's interesting that in "Tangled" while the audience clearly knows Mother Gothel's motivations established from the beginning, the main heroine doesn't know about her mother being a fraud nor that she's essentially been gaslit her whole life into believing that any life outside her tower is dangerous and cruel and her only purpose of living is to stay and serve her mother's interests because "she knows best". So the twist is for her in the middle of the film once she realizes how literally trapped she's been after escaping and knowing Flynn Rider who also has a complex secret and backstory being an antihero who has become a thief for a living. "Moana" does this formula in reverse. What happens to be a villain in the form of the tyrannical supernatural is revealed to be a peaceful destination in the supernatural.

While i like all the movies mentioned, i think Zootopia did it best. It's not a musical, so it kind of masks its formula. It diverges allitle bit with Judy and the formula by her not being sheltered and her actually somewhat accomplishing her dreams in the montage. Every single beat, the formula tries to accomplish Zootopia nails. The characters are belivable and probably the most interesting of the 4 movies. The separation of Judy and Nick is really belivable and well acted (in fact, the whole movie is really well acted) their reunion is the best one and is really emotional. The character development is AMAZING and fells so human. The movie also avoids being formulaic since the formula is only 1 of 5 different main aspects of its story. Whyle yes, we do have the formula we also have, the comedy, the mistery, the exploration of this amazing world, and the themes of prejudice. The movie connects these 5 themes together masking the formula. And all 5 of them are really well executed, in my opinion.

You forgot probably Star Wars' most egregious cameo. In Rogue One, when the heroes are on the planet that mines Kyber Crystals, they run into Cornelius Evazan and Ponda Baba, the two guys at the bar on Tatooine. They get all upset when Jyn bumps into them and basically announces who he is to her. Literally days later, they freak out again and draw a weapon on Luke in a planet in a completely different system. It's incredible that Ponda Baba is able to keep Cornelius alive, as it seems that any time he has a conversation with anyone, he tells them that he's wanted in 10 systems. It's amazing that he lives long enough to actually encounter Luke in the bar on Tatooine.

How do you think they got the death sentence on so many systems? Obviously it must be from going planet to planet and attacking random people.

Your title screen is a bit misleading since I was expecting your take on Where Star Wars is Heading, not where Star Wars has already been. I agree that the Star Wars Universe has been shrinking and it’s making the franchise worse and if Star Wars keeps shrinking any more it will be as unbearable as The Book of Boba Fett. Your video makes Boba Fett out to be an insignificant background character in the original movies but kids from my day saw Boba Fett as a total badass and imagined all kinds of stories and adventures where Boba Fett was the main character! Disney shit the bed when they made a show for Boba Fett and cast a fat, old actor where the titular character is an afterthought that sat on a chair or soaked in a bacta tank for half the episode instead of being an intergalactic bounty hunter! Since The Mandalorian stole all of Boba Fett’s thunder, Boba Fett has become irrelevant to the younger audiences and the Boba Felt show reinforces his impotence. Everyone I knew growing up had an understanding of The Force and what it meant. The original trilogy didn’t need to explain it. Years later the Prequels quantified The Force and dispelled the mystique of the metaphysical nature of The Force. Then the Sequels tried to kill off the past to make way for the future and I was one of the few that accepted it in the hopes that the future of Star Wars would bring us new adventures with new characters and new stories. Star Wars is headed backwards and my hopes are diminishing with every new Star Wars release. (Here’s a tip in case any Star Wars writers are reading the comments: no more infiltrating impenetrable fortresses by a small band of unlikely heroes. That was awesome in Star Wars ANH and it was okay in Return of the Jedi but it’s been beaten to death since then!) There is a scene in the great movie, Reign of Fire, where the characters in the movie reenact Star Wars to entertain some little children. Even thought it's only two guys performing the story for the kids, the gasps and awe of the kids comes from the story, not the effects or the props. This was how we reacted as kids in the theater in 1977! Star Wars fans are eternally hopeful that some new Star Wars branded offerings will recapture the magic and wonder of the original trilogy. Unfortunately Star Wars is heading the same way it has been for many years: it’s only going to be a lazy money-grab by producers who simply don’t care about story-telling and myth building.

I honestly love all the extra cameos for the most part, but I get what you are saying here. Ideally I'd like star wars to do a mixture of both.

You really don’t realize how incredibly good the originals are until you see the new shite. Even the prequels don’t seem as bad compared to the new crap. I mean it had bad writing and dialogue but at least the world was interesting and it led into the the original trilogy in a coherent way. Like the fight scenes, and villains especially were so much better back in the OT. Where did choreography and good villains go? rogue one was pry the best of all of the Disney crap at being faithful to the og trilogy but not because they did great in any category and more just because they didn’t do awful in any category(villain, characters, story, etc).

For those who didn't see the channel announcement, this is a reupload of a video I created and attempted to post a few days ago just before Hawkeye Episode 3 was coming out. Unfortunately, TH-cam blocked that video on copyright grounds. After cutting it up a little bit, the algorithm finally relented, and allowed me to post this. Though it's a little late, and slightly different from its original form, I'm excited to finally present my new video on Hawkeye. The remainder of this comment will be added thoughts based on Episode 3. SPOILERS for Episode 3 from here onward: After watching episode 3, I can say I still stand by pretty much everything I've said here, and I'm happy to say I think the show's quality is definitely increasing. Something I touched on in the video, but didn't go into too deeply was how I've thought the previous MCU shows have all had dips in quality near the end. I'm really hoping that's not the case here, I want this series to stay on its current upward trajectory. Echo's origin was surprisingly good. I didn't expect them to go that in-depth into her motivation, but it seems obvious in hindsight that she'd be doing this because Ronin killed someone she cared about. The hearing aid breaking was a good plot point, especially as it led to the amazing scene of Kate having to translate for Clint's son over the phone. But I'm glad to see them leaning more into that aspect of the character. Echo said that Clint relies too much on technology with the hearing aid, and I hope that comes back up later, since I was surprised to see he knows very little sign language. The chase scene was great, the use of trick arrows was fun, a lot of good little comic nods there. But still, the thing that held it up was Clint and Kate's conversation; both the banter, but especially the genuine moments. Her talking about him inspiring her again, how he is a role model, gives me a lot of hope for where this is going. A little moment that I forgot to mention in the video, but was glad to see in this episode was Clint suggesting Kate give the dog a real name. It was something I'd thought about before, something that shows that he's softening up a bit. The lack of name for Pizza Dog could be a running gag until the end of the show, when they settle on the name "Lucky." At the end of the episode, Jack threatens Clint with a sword. This doesn't really mean anything, he's just defending himself from an intruder in his house, but the sword he was holding did appear to be the Ronin sword. We saw him take that from the auction, but I don't know if Kate did, so they may notice that and see it as some kind of hint. Based on the way Kate talks about Jack here, I feel more confident in my theory that he is not going to be who she thinks he is, even if he is shady in some way. The tracksuit who translated for Echo was also named as "Kazi." I won't go into any details here, but that name did excite me, as it is more significant (at least in the comic) than they let on.
