I’m definitely going to look into doing a combo of blow out cuts and curly cuts. Curly cuts weren’t damaging my hair but my last three inches were always questionable I’ll get 2-3 curly cuts a year with trims in between.
I personally have done both types of cuts: curly cuts and blown-out cuts. After the second curly cut I noticed that not all my ends were being cut off and I experienced additional tangles during my washing and conditioning sessions about 1 to 2 months even after a curly cut maintenance cut. I decided to cut my hair my self inbetween the maximum time between getting curly cuts as my stylists required to be considered a regular client (to be seen every 6 months) 2 plus years later and two stylists later and I can say that I personally need both / have found it more suitable to my hair manageability and affordability. I will say though my hair is in much better conditon now and I have spoken with my current stylist about cutting my own hair inbetween them cutting my hair and they are fine with it. I think it’s hard to make blanket statements about which cuts one should do. I also think this is a multifaceted issue as some stylist might not have the skills needed to do both well or prefer to do one over the other. Someone I think might be interesting to check out would be Lavida Loves Coils here on TH-cam check out some of her lives she has different thoughts about styling and choosing one over the other based on the situation. Worth checking out I think. Learning a lot from her.
I agree multifaceted issue without one blanket solution. Thank you for sharing your experience and the recommendation for Lavida Loves Coils. I've never seen her channel.
Thank you very much for sharing your perspective as I was wondering what to do going forward - whether I need to get the ends assessed in a blown out state. My stylist was very happy with my progress last time I went for a curly maintenance cut so I will check with her next time to see if I am worrying for nothing because of the debate. I have been consistent following her advice and only do was and gos which work well for my life style not to mention the many compliments.
I suppose there are quite a few reasons as to why some are experiencing problems with curly cuts. I do agree that the issue is multifaceted. Unfortunately, the issue has blown up in a way that is seems that it will not be settled in a constructive manner. This I find very sad. There comes a time when social media doesn't convey communication well. The tone of the typed word and inflection of voice is not present (or is overly present). I had asked one or two of those who experienced trouble with their curly cuts had they shared their comments with the stylist who cut their hair. I didn't get a response but I listened to their comments as they found a new stylists. I'm in agreement with Harmonious Balance in that they missed an opportunity to communicate and strengthen a relationship with the stylist and make it work together. Can't wait to see your new cut!
I find the conversation interesting. I am not sure I'm convinced that curly cuts are uniquely damaging but yes i agree that it depends on how good the stylist is (as with anything). I myself have only started going to the salon in 2021 (for wet cuts), only had one dry curly cut last year and have not had a professional cut since so I can't speak from my own experience. I'm living in a world of split ends right now 😂
Appreciate you sharing your thoughts on this topic! I think a lot of people feel misled by the stylists they trusted, and that's part of what's causing the frustration. Sounds like your stylist is very good though, and responds in an attentive and professional manner to client concerns. 👍🏼
I've never had a curly cut, because my preference is a long bob instead of an angled cut. I blow out my hair for cuts because I want to be sure my ends are trimmed well. I also cut my ends myself, and enjoy the process. I too have seen people who get curly cuts whose blowouts look good and others whose ends do not look good when blown out. Like you I don't know what the difference is, but if I had to guess I'd say maybe the skill level of the stylist. It's like anything else just because two people go through the same training doesn't mean that they are equal in skill when they put that training to work outside of the course they took.
Yes I totally agree if you have not had any problems getting curly cuts why change! So my issues were Velcro like ends, webbing and increasing difficulty when detangling! My stylist that had cared for my hair a year prior, at my appointment after having routine trims my ends looked like they have not been maintained! She had to stop because it was so difficult to blow the hair out! I am not the only person many have experienced the same issues! There is an amazing CIK stylist Naturallybybria she made the statement if someone new came into her salon saying they have been getting routine curly cuts she is doing a blow out service! She makes it very clear as do my stylist that curly cuts are amazing for shaping the hair but as regards to healthy ends you might need to incorporate the 2!(curly & straight) Also curly cuts makes it difficult to retain length! Just as you have to do your due diligence with curly cuts , getting straight cuts require the same diligence! The stylist has to know how to cut for your results to translate well when curly! Also you have to put in proper haircare practices before blowing out the hair! I won’t be getting them anymore but I still think they are beautiful! my video is just for awareness and to push clients to have the conversation with their stylist so they can have the best outcome when maintaining their hair! 1) Velcro like ends tell your stylist 2) webbing tell your stylist 3) increased difficulty detangling talk to your stylist! It’s not one size fits all! Also I know I am the opposite to most because I love short hair, but I hate split ends ! I am excited to see your new shape when you get your cut! I also hope you make it to your hair goal!
I am experiencing the same issues as you did. The Velcro ends and webbing But it’s not from curly cuts Mine started when I stopped oiling my hair. I’m not sure what that means But I’ve gotten a trim And now paying close attention.
I experienced all three of those from getting strictly curly cuts as well! It wasn't from my water because I have a water softener and keep my hair on a strict 6-8 week clarify regimen. I alternate between a hard water clarifier and the regular Malibu clarifying shampoo just to be safe. Since I started getting trims on blown out hair my ends no longer stick together and detangling isn't a nightmare anymore. If I want to update my shape I'll get a curly cut but for maintaining the health of my ends blowouts only! I ended up losing about 1.5 inches my first blowout cut because the ends were so bad even though I was getting regular curly cuts every 3 months....
@@CuriosityRover77 I am researching the reason why, I will also ask my cousin who is a stylist for over 20 years why we are experiencing these issues! My cousin already told me curly cuts isn’t effective for maintaining tightly coiled hair. My current stylist told me this before getting curly cuts and wasn’t surprised others were experimenting these issues! This is all around a very frustrating situation!
They are hair cuts done on hair that has been set in a wash and go. So the cut is done on your natural texture/curl pattern instead of blown straight or flat ironed
After I recordered and editted this video. I had a few additional thoughts about curly cuts. Shared them here th-cam.com/video/bGBom-xMCAE/w-d-xo.html

Thanks for sharing ❤️ If you are happy with your cuts , stylist and mostly wearing wash and gos...you probably have nothing to worry about

All 3 of those issues can be caused by hard water. Not enough attention given to water quality even by stylist. Shower filters don't soften water.
I am experiencing the same issues as you did.
