Just found your channel and it's awesome man. Subscribed for life. I will have my own boat one day and I've been watching all your videos for some much needed guidance. Thank you!
I've gotta get my hands on that shirt! Now if @chasing latitudes would only create a shirt that reads, "We're shaking. We're baking. We're cruising. We're brusing."
Finding this helpful, shopping for something much simpler, inland lake in utah under 32ft, but have a family of 4 and zero time to work on a boat. I was looking at ‘70s boats, hard pivot after these videos 2000+ now (ideally 2010+) won’t have a slip for another 1-2 years due to marina construction, but thanks!!
Problem is start asking a seller or broker dates on sail, dates on rigging, etc they can never give a truthful answer So you disregard the boat and move on to the next for sale to find the same thing out...sellers think 20yr old rigging is no big deal but to me its a deal breaker unless negotiated into the price
great video, I love that you include the cost to bringing the boat up to "foundational standards" ...I am sure this is the industry standard to get the best structured deal. Deal with the FACTS!

Thank you for your channel, I find it very informative and definitely you know what you are talking about. However, I find it very contradicting when you say youtubers and beginner sailors do not cross oceans within the first 2 years, and Sailing Zatara crossed oceans without any sailing experience and within few weeks from buying their first boat. could you please shed some light on this. Thanks you Chris.
Really great info! -- QUESTION -- Please help my "girl brain", We are going for a circumnavigation, just for two people.. Choices are an really good condition Passport 40, or a really good condition Jenneau 409, which feels and looks much more modern. We keep being told about "bluewater" and that we "must" get the passport... But, we will equip either one accordingly as needed. If we forced you to make a decision for you and one other, to spend 4 years going all the way, which would you take? Why?
@@ChasingLatitudes ...understood.. so just in a word.. is the Passport a "Dumpster" boat (using your favorite languge)? I suspect you would go jeanneau 409 now that we watched your video on it, but it is for a circumnavigation?

Looking at a Contessa 32 . A glorious sailboat that I dream about owning one day , ps i have never seen one just seen it on youtube , using sailboat data are you suggesting its only a 24ft boat 😳🥺😢🙂
OUT OF THE BOX QUESTION: In fact this isn't just out of the box, it's out of left field entirely. So I'm shopping for a boat and I'm autistic and that means my brain is constantly going a million miles a second and I consider things often for no reason other than the thought simply appeared. This is one of those times, hope you all enjoy this thought experiment. As I shop, I regularly see these deals for partial ownership, 21k for 1/5 share of a 2016 Jeanneau 519 for example currently listed on YB. Let's say I buy into this... I assume there are some sort of contracts regarding how long I can have the vessel out for and where I can go or whatever, fine. Let's say I don't care and I buy into this split ownership deal - my name is now on title. That means I can't steal the boat as I'm an owner, right? So lets say I put 21k into this boat out of Cali and I sail the lil girl to the Philippines and decide I'm not coming back. Now what? You can't say I stole the boat so there's no criminal charges to file, only civil. In other words, there's no way to take it from me or make me give it back. And, since all of my American assets and cash are in a trust you can't touch them in court so sue all you like, I'll not even show in court because who cares and I have a Jeanneau 519 I paid 21k for... what am I missing?
The fact that your plotting a crime publicly may be what your missing. But in all seriousness that's not how partial ownership works, in the contracts there are in fact rules and regulations for use, location and so on. It would be no different if you just stole a vessel , yes it's criminal, yes most places would extradition you, yes you could also hide
@@ChasingLatitudes slow your roll there sailor, I'm not plotting anything. I clearly said "thought experiment" so lets not make this something it's not. It's just for a silly discussion. So how does it work then? How do they structure this type of deal so that I can be pinned with theft on something I paid into? Just curious... and remember, you can choose to ignore this comment, have fun with it or you can choose to be a snarky a$$hat, your choice. I'm just here to have fun with this, maybe you can too ;-)
@@sterlingarcher1962 i shared a boat like 20 years ago and my brother shares a coastal house. the way its typically done is you have a contract and in the contract there are dates on which you can use the boat and the condition you are required to leave it in after you are done. (clean boat, no trash, full fuel, full water tanks, empty black water tank, etc etc) basicly its treated as a rental but you rent it of each other. you own and maintain only 1/5th of the boat, but rent 4/5th of the boat for free. at limited timeframes.
Sir, I feel awkward and unsure if buying a sailboat when I retire is the right move. I sailed when I was younger on a small boat for just a few months with a childhood friend and his family. Now I am 65 and plan on retiring in 2 years 9 months. I'm one of those who plans ahead and does the research. I live in Southern California and won't be able to afford to continue living here. The plan is to move to Puerto Vallarta Mexico buy a sailboat and live my dream just sailing along the coast there and in the Bay of Banderas. Nothing dramatic, but I thought I could take tourists out as a slight income to help pay for the slip fees and the maintenance of The Craft. I don't plan on making a lot of money doing that just to maintain the craft. I should have enough money to retire on but with the new president in office who knows! I might have to make it a full-time business or at least another income coming in to survive. But, my family is from Hawaii and I remember a man who did this and he just took people out for sunsets and he made a living at it. I thought what a wonderful way to live your last days. I'm in very good shape athletically I still surf, and workout exercise almost every day. My job itself is a workout. Sorry for the lengthy message sometimes I just need to research this but don't have a lot of money. I really think I can make a go of this. I love sailing it's a dream for me to do this. My wife and older son will be moving to Mexico. Should I be contacting you through email? I would love to go sailing with you at some point. I think taking small steps to start researching and getting involved... I haven't watched a lot of your videos I need to actually probably listen at the end better to see how to get ahold of you, lol
