My website and articles www.chasinglatitudes.com
Welcome to Chasing Latitudes! Have you ever imagined the smell of the ocean air as your boat crashes through the waves? The freedom that comes from casting off the bow lines and heading out to sea to explore new places you can’t reach by car or airplane? Then this channel is for you.
You will not see white sand beaches here, restaurant reviews, beach parties, selfies or Japanese knives. What you will find is factual information based on decades of sailing experience.
My channel is specifically meant for one thing and one thing only, to help YOU find your new to you fancy-dancy yacht of your dreams and get on the water in the fastest, most time efficient manner.
Don’t get caught up in looking at old boats! I focus on mostly newer vessels, built in 2000 or later because I want you to spend as much of your time as possible sailing, not practicing your restoration skills on an old boat attempting to bring it to its former glory.
You want to take advantage of the amazing newer technology and modern hull designs when it comes to sailing. This is going to make your vessel far easier to sail solol or short handed and make them far more comfortable and efficient to live aboard full time or even just weekenders without buying more boat than you need.
I offer a wide variety of services including consulting where I will take you through the entire process of how to budget properly, choosing what vessel size will work for your needs, what type of vessel, I will help you shop for vessels, determine offer prices, schedule surveys, talk with brokers, teach you how to do your own pre-survey, walk you through hiring the correct surveyor and help you avoid all of the common pitfalls that you will find when purchasing used sailing vessels.
The consulting does not stop there, I will be with you every step of the way and long after you have purchased your vessel as consulting also comes with lifetime access to the members area,.
Chasing Latitudes hosts a large, active private members area where the members are more than happy to offer their own experience to solve problems, host private videos for ASA Sailing quizzes (ASA 101, 103, & 104), and live stream videos which feature anything from member cruising to boat shopping, boat comparisons, and other live content with chat from the subscribers to my TH-cam channel and channel members.
It’s time for YOU to get on the water. Come aboard!

I've gotta get my hands on that shirt! Now if @chasing latitudes would only create a shirt that reads, "We're shaking. We're baking. We're cruising. We're brusing."
Just found your channel and it's awesome man. Subscribed for life. I will have my own boat one day and I've been watching all your videos for some much needed guidance. Thank you!
😂 You too, like that couple, can be fixing your boat in beautiful tropical locations....so true.....
“Oh, Mylanta” 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂 I was in stitches
Haha
Finding this helpful, shopping for something much simpler, inland lake in utah under 32ft, but have a family of 4 and zero time to work on a boat. I was looking at ‘70s boats, hard pivot after these videos 2000+ now (ideally 2010+) won’t have a slip for another 1-2 years due to marina construction, but thanks!!
Great channel - learning tons of great info BEFORE I purchase my first sail boat.
2:36 :"green beverages and Japanese knives"... Those 2 things make life worth living!!!
Awesome video! I really like your honesty. Great sense of humor! 😂. Keep it up, man. Subscribed.
thank you
Problem is start asking a seller or broker dates on sail, dates on rigging, etc they can never give a truthful answer
So you disregard the boat and move on to the next for sale to find the same thing out...sellers think 20yr old rigging is no big deal but to me its a deal breaker unless negotiated into the price
great video, I love that you include the cost to bringing the boat up to "foundational standards" ...I am sure this is the industry standard to get the best structured deal. Deal with the FACTS!
Thank you I'm going to join your website because I want to go from the sofa to Solo Sailing
With my current budget i only have one question. Does it float? Done, wrap it up.
Hah, wrap it up I'm buying, let's go
THIS is now my favorite yotube yacht channel Sir you made me laugh and learn alot at the same time. 👏👏👏
What are some good options for budget boats to solo circumnavigate the world?
Thanks Chris
I love the aesthetics of a lot of older sailboats but he's right you have to consider what your getting into for maintenance if your going to be doing it the amount of money and work you will be doing it way larger then people consider. Be thorough I love wooden boats built into fiberglass hulls but the work and maintenance is something you have to scrutinize. I love older boats but you will Need both TLC's Tender loving care and Tender loving cash.
Hey Chris, I paid for the one hour consultation and purchased the book etc. I know you must be busy but could really do with scheduling the consultation as the boat purchase is moving forward. Thanks.
Peter have you checked your email ? As soon as you purchased I sent you an email with the members area invite, please just email me and we can get it sorted
Awesome guide! Thanks for putting this together!
Please something about how to choose solo sailboat.. I don't get along with other humans. What makes and what breaks a solo sailboat. Min leght with comfort, max length, Ease of use, like that furler for jibs makes a huge difference. I'm looking at boats and I have no idea what I'm looking at. Besides length discrepancy.. By now we know We want to use every foot we paid for. I've seen something similar to furler for main sail that's build in mast or that other boom thingy that's attached hanging under main sheet ... No idea how it's called.. But it makes reefing easier.. I guess?!..
As you can see, I'm prime example of not understanding a thing what we are supposed to look at..
Your friend Lady K suggests 2009 Odyssey 36i and it kind of makes sense... It's not archaeological find, roomy... What Beneteau you would suggest instead 😂 jk
In mast furler will be your friend for solo sailing , anything with an in mast, if above 40 you want a bow thruster as well
Thank you for your channel, I find it very informative and definitely you know what you are talking about. However, I find it very contradicting when you say youtubers and beginner sailors do not cross oceans within the first 2 years, and Sailing Zatara crossed oceans without any sailing experience and within few weeks from buying their first boat. could you please shed some light on this. Thanks you Chris.
Love your content. Wish you had a better mic tho 😅
Thanks!
THANK YOU SO MUCH
If you had the opportunity, would you buy new? I really like the oceanics But you have to pick her up brand new
No, if buy one 4 or 5 years old
Great and informative videos! I love the depths of knowledge on this account:)
I've noticed you sometimes comment on bad pictures (like example at 5:49 in the video). Have you tried clicking the picture?
If you don't open the pictures, they are usually very zoomed in. Opening the pics will zoom them out again.
(Downside of opening the pictures are they have this "animation" when browsing that takes a small second every picture...)
Great video mate, very informative. ⛵️
If I buy a boat in the Caribbean during hurricane season like you suggest; I assume the locals don't haul out each storm lol. I hope there are people that can help teach me how to set up the boat to ride out the storm (anchor sizing, mangroves? etc).
You’re going to hall the boat out for the inspection anyways!
Choise?
hi , i'm planing on designing / welding my own sailboat but i can't find any info on anything can you help ?
Greetings 🙏.
Looking at a Contessa 32 . A glorious sailboat that I dream about owning one day , ps i have never seen one just seen it on youtube , using sailboat data are you suggesting its only a 24ft boat 😳🥺😢🙂
As far as livable space yes, that's why Eric doesn't live full time on it
Thanks heaps for the info. 1 yr and 1 week till I can access my Superannuation and buy a yacht. Trouble in Australia, not many production yachts for sale. Cheers
buy it in europe and enjoy the trip back home trough atlantic and the pacific
Florida condo's just starting to crash now, give it a few years. Everything goes with RE.
I'm thinking of buying a rubber ring. Any advice?
Walmart has good prices
Do you have a discount code for an ASA subscription? Thought I herd you mention it on one of your videos…
Easy cheesy lemon breezy 🍋
Really great info! -- QUESTION -- Please help my "girl brain", We are going for a circumnavigation, just for two people.. Choices are an really good condition Passport 40, or a really good condition Jenneau 409, which feels and looks much more modern. We keep being told about "bluewater" and that we "must" get the passport... But, we will equip either one accordingly as needed. If we forced you to make a decision for you and one other, to spend 4 years going all the way, which would you take? Why?
That's like an entire video to explain
@@ChasingLatitudes ...understood.. so just in a word.. is the Passport a "Dumpster" boat (using your favorite languge)? I suspect you would go jeanneau 409 now that we watched your video on it, but it is for a circumnavigation?
@@Coleen-Love that's why I offer consulting
@@ChasingLatitudes .very cool.. So then it would be for the 409 Jeanneau instead of consulting for the dumpster Passport 40?
Is it possible to find a dual helm sailboat that's not a trash can for 75k or less? I don't see anything in that range on Yacht World anywhere on the west coast (I'm in Oregon). Will prices tank when summer ends and election gets closer? Thanks for the great content Chris!
Jeanneau 39i occasionally and the beneteua cycledes 39
@@ChasingLatitudes So set alerts on Yacht world and grab a cup of patience?
@@ChasingLatitudes Also, thank you and just joined your Patreon!
@TrevorJonescreator thanks my mam, male your way over to the embers area via the patreon link, possibly come on a delivery with me , check out some boats, east peezy
@@ChasingLatitudes Would love it! Would you allow a -gulp- travel vlogger with you!? 😂 I think of the videos I've made on my other channel and I'm like "I know Chris would flame the 💩out of me." 😎 But hey, it would be fun! My wife and I have talked about throwing down for the full on help from you to find our boat and for the opportunity to crew with you.
« Stop The Madness! » …. Love it!
Thanks
Does your spread sheet guestimate values for sails, rigging, etc or does the book cover it?
yes
the book does
Is this the place you come to learn about Sailboats?
Out of curiosity, do you sail boats to Europe from the USA?
yes
Hey,Chris..longtime...Great to see you trashin' boats again.
Love ya
Wait. AIS on the spreadsheet for $5,000? Assuming it has NMEA 2000, maybe $800 for a transponder, isn’t it?
Referring to the entire chart plotter with integrated ais
And then there taxes, registration, survey and delivery.....If you can find a slip.....
Why are Catalinas so bad?
Personal preferences
It's like saying why is Rolex or Cadillac bad? Rolex isn't "bad" they're usually not practical, particularly on a budget, because they carry premium. A CFO asked me once what's more American than throwing a perfectly good footlong sandwich into the street? Throwing 2 footlong sandwiches into the street. Why are we throwing sandwiches in the street? Idk why do we "need" sailboats 😅
OUT OF THE BOX QUESTION:
In fact this isn't just out of the box, it's out of left field entirely.
So I'm shopping for a boat and I'm autistic and that means my brain is constantly going a million miles a second and I consider things often for no reason other than the thought simply appeared. This is one of those times, hope you all enjoy this thought experiment.
As I shop, I regularly see these deals for partial ownership, 21k for 1/5 share of a 2016 Jeanneau 519 for example currently listed on YB. Let's say I buy into this... I assume there are some sort of contracts regarding how long I can have the vessel out for and where I can go or whatever, fine. Let's say I don't care and I buy into this split ownership deal - my name is now on title. That means I can't steal the boat as I'm an owner, right? So lets say I put 21k into this boat out of Cali and I sail the lil girl to the Philippines and decide I'm not coming back. Now what? You can't say I stole the boat so there's no criminal charges to file, only civil. In other words, there's no way to take it from me or make me give it back. And, since all of my American assets and cash are in a trust you can't touch them in court so sue all you like, I'll not even show in court because who cares and I have a Jeanneau 519 I paid 21k for... what am I missing?
The fact that your plotting a crime publicly may be what your missing. But in all seriousness that's not how partial ownership works, in the contracts there are in fact rules and regulations for use, location and so on. It would be no different if you just stole a vessel , yes it's criminal, yes most places would extradition you, yes you could also hide
@@ChasingLatitudes slow your roll there sailor, I'm not plotting anything. I clearly said "thought experiment" so lets not make this something it's not. It's just for a silly discussion.
So how does it work then? How do they structure this type of deal so that I can be pinned with theft on something I paid into? Just curious... and remember, you can choose to ignore this comment, have fun with it or you can choose to be a snarky a$$hat, your choice. I'm just here to have fun with this, maybe you can too ;-)
@@sterlingarcher1962 i shared a boat like 20 years ago and my brother shares a coastal house. the way its typically done is you have a contract and in the contract there are dates on which you can use the boat and the condition you are required to leave it in after you are done. (clean boat, no trash, full fuel, full water tanks, empty black water tank, etc etc) basicly its treated as a rental but you rent it of each other. you own and maintain only 1/5th of the boat, but rent 4/5th of the boat for free. at limited timeframes.
Liked, subbed, bought the book :)
I can afford 50k :)
You definitely should have started down at 32ft or so. And fuck couples . Aren't there more singles put there sailing then couples? 🤔
imagine even my boat got into yatch world.. PS* Chris cant vote because ,, he is an AI ,, or a convicted felon
I cant vote because I live in Puerto rico, its a us territory and living here we are not allowed to vote in the election
@@ChasingLatitudes someone needs to make a video of youtube sailing hotties, ,, unbelievable how hisbands/boyfriends are showing off them girls barley wearing anythnig to the world
Prices? T wins prices go down. B wins prices go up.
Prices have been going down since T tried to steal the last election 🤓
Agreed

Old Boomer Dreamer here… I purchased a couple $100 consulting sessions from 4:59 our wonderful resident Smartass! 😏
But have gone through the resulting emails and CANNOT figure out how to access ‘Members Area’.
Anyone feel like Geriatric Tech Support… any help be appreciated!
I need to d/l the spreadsheet (we’ve found a boat we aim to put in an offer on and need guidance on how to best proceed to make a fair offer!?)
Much appreciation in advance!
