    This is exactly me. I don’t seem to have a tongue thrust, but had bad open bite as a teenager, only a couple molars touched. Then had 3 years braces, rubber bands, disc surgery and that was 20 years ago. Didn’t have a good orthotic in until I started watching you and my back molars shifted over the years, and don’t meet together like they used to and I became disabled in pain for years, you name it I had it. Now 5 months into physical therapy and orthotic and doing better but still having swallowing issues and changes to my upper pallet hanging lower and throat spasms a lot. Have you done a video on TMJD and throat issues?

    • @theTMJdoc
      @theTMJdoc  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      No I have not. I don’t have a lot of experience with the throat related symptoms because it’s not something I hear commonly.

    I'm in a world of hurt with my open bite. I used to have perfect teeth and it depresses me so much. It started only about a year and a half ago when I noticed there was the tiniest gap between my top and bottom teeth then I noticed pain in my jaw joints in the morning and when I would eat. I went to the dentist and he suggested a mouth guard because he thought I might have TMJ, so I had one made up for me and went back a few months later. Sure enough there was as the dentist described "impressive damage" to the mouth guard. So I was grinding. I asked the dentist what to do about it and he just said keep wearing the mouth guard and come back in a year. He wasn't much help. I recently went to the doctors and they requested an xray, got those done but when I went back they said they needed more. Now my doctor has randomly gone on holiday and I have to wait 2 months to know my results and what to do next. The gap has gotten huge over just one year, I'm in constant pain. I've lost weight due to not being able to eat properly, I'm finding it harder and harder to talk properly and I can no longer smile. I hope someone can help me, it just feels so hopeless right now.

    Thank you for your explanation. I have had an anterior open bite with crossbite for my whole life that came from finger sucking. I suspect mouthbreathing had an impact on my bite too. My tmjd started at age 13 with clicking, and has progressively gotten worse over the last 18 years. Thinking back over the advice i received from my dentist, orthodontist, and "tmj specialist" at the beginning, i wonder why they did not recommend moving forward with orthodontics to correct the bite and have a chance at stabilizing the tmjs when the disfunction was less severe. I feel like my doctors failed to help me, and I'll be in pain for the rest of my life because of it. So my question is, in cases like mine where there is an obvious bite problem but no tongue thrust, why do dentists avoid orthodontics? I understand that ideally it should be done in conjunction with other treatment, but I strongly believe that a healthy bite should be a primary goal of healing tmjd.

    • @theTMJdoc
      @theTMJdoc  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Sorry you've been going through this. Balancing the bite is secondary to treating the muscles and joints if there is pain and dysfunction. I explain more in this video:

    Hi Dr Priya Mistry, a few weeks ago, I went to a dentist to do two fillings on the upper teeth and have a dental splint. When the dentist was doing the two fillings, I noticed that she forced a lot of my jaw. When she finished the fillings, she tried to take the imprint of my teeth to make the splint. At the act, my frontal veneer tooth fell off, after she reglued it back, she gave me two small cotton rolls to bite, after a few minutes later, I took off the two small cotton rolls, there is a gap between my upper teeth and below teeth, and it's exact the space of the small cotton rolls I bit between my teeth, and now I have an open bite. I really don't understand what is happening? I went in with a perfect set of teeth, came out with an open bite and crooked frontal teeth( because when she reglued back my veneer tooth, all the frontal teeth squeezed together)... Could you please tell me why this happened to me? Thanks a million in advance! In my entire life, I never heard of an open bite until now.

Finding few things u explained as I used to be a edge to edge class 3, Idk when I got open bite maybe in 2 years or so, even crossbite I noticed recently, am I risk, in past had headache but now normal, clicking and popping sound with disc deviation all I have, is my periodontal health gonna be affected, I have all bottom molars with mesioangular impaction and they tend to pain and have pericoronitis more than 2 times, not much but sometimes it affects, is this making my teeth loose or will be prone to caries or dentigerous cyst? Excuse me, too deep I think all I care my hygiene very well, but still these things not let me sleep when my exams are getting closer. Pls help Dr. Priya.

    What's ur thoughts on jaw surgery and TMJD problems. Can it make problems with the joint worse?
    Some sources I read state that for unknown reasons, orthognathic surgery can worsen TMJ issues.
    I have an anterior open bite and crossbite, and am told I need jaw surgery to fix it, but I am way too hesitant of that surgery. It's very invasive and scared of complications. However, some who have had jaw surgery for correction of their open bite seem to be happy. I feel it's like roulette. U don't really know how your own experience will be.

      @@theTMJdoc When performing the jaw surgery, do they plan as to where the condyle will now be positioned?
      In my opinion, what I think is going on is that this new bite created thru surgery, results in the condyle not being in a favorable position.
      For example, the orthotics/splints aim to properly position the condyle/disc/muscles where everything is most relaxed. I wonder if they do this with the jaw surgery planning as well. Only problem, I feel this would require the help of a dentist who specializes in TMJ issues working together with the oral surgeon. I am not sure if this is done in practice.

    I have this from tongue thrusting due to pain. I now can't relax my jaw fully as my back teeth touch. What is the best form of treatment for this type of open bite for someone with TMJ in your opinion? My dentist wants to reduce my back teeth. Are there any other options? Thank you for your work
