  • Here is some action at the Coalville Depot open day in 1987. As well as static exhibits we see visiting locos on railtours D200 & a pair of Cromptons plus a few steam locos in action including Flying Scotsman. Coalville was a freight depot and as the coal mines in the area closed in the late 80s & early 90s the depot's workload disappeared and the stone workings were left to Leicester, and later Acton & Hither Green crews as well, to cover. See the place in happier times when BR even ran a DMU shuttle from Leicester to the Depot to get us all there! If you liked the video please subscribe to my channel, there are lots more transport & quirky vids to upload!

Great video, thank you very much indeed for uploading this and many others. I'm watching them with mixed feelings, especially regarding the varied traction and access opportunities. The old open days in the 80s were great, and I think one comment hit the nail on the head about taking responsibility ourselves. External events have compromised (understandably) that opportunity to a certain extent but there does seem to be overkill on restricting access and wandering around these days.

Yes, open days are nothing like they were..... At Old Oak Common in 1971 there was a withrawn Hymek there, anything you could take off, you could keep. One bloke was wandering around with an engine room door!.....

They were run by the local staff in those days without the 'professional' help that later days got like Old Oak's one in August 2000. When the staff went to the first meeting the 'professionals' were already in there lording it up. One of the reasons why i never got involved and helped out. The guys at Coalville knew their stuff and had several open days, happy times!

That's a result! You are the second person to see themselves on one of my vids..... a Guard on the Isle of Wight recognised himself from my film of my trip there in 1988.....

Coalville was always a great place to visit with an added bonus of the Midland Red bus garage across the road.

I have done a couple of opendays here, one in the early 1980s where we arrived on a 6 or 7 car DMU from Leicester.

I took a train down there one night in around 1999 time to run round, even at night you could see the place was really desolate!"

ah Man, the good old days hey, no H&S to stop you climbing up in to the cab, unlike today it as to have a proper staircase with hand rails (No pun intended) no barriers to stop us having a better look, great YT clip 👍Thumbs up 👍

I miss these type of Open Days where we took some sort of responsibility for ourselves. And when the entrance fee wasn't excessive like modern open days are!
