A Visual Form of Musique Concrète Composition

With a background in painting, music, mathematics, history, education, and music & creative arts with technology, Maura McDonnell has been creating abstract visual music works since 1997.
Maura was at first drawn to experimenting with crafting abstract moving imagery by exploring and adapting techniques from various forms of electronic music composition techniques such as Musique concrète and digitally manipulated sound and digitally synthetic sound. Similar and parallel methods were applied to digital images and moving image technology to create abstract moving imagery. Source imagery used comes from found footage, digitally manipulated imagery from recorded and scanned images, and crafting digital synthetic imagery. Building on these techniques in her development of her animation practice, Maura uses various unique methods for approaching the visual from a musical perspective. She delves into the power of composition where the artist creates an emotional experience by focusing on crafting tension and release on abstract imagery.
In this talk, Maura shared her methods and approaches and the categories that she works with in crafting abstract animation to musical sounds. A screening of a selection of her works from her first experiments in 1997 to recent works was alson shown.
The activity concluded with a Q&A session open to audience participation.
