Pretty much the same situation as in Croatia (ex-Yugoslavia). Back in the days we were also neutral and every residential building/school/kindergarten had at least one nuclear bomb shelter. We still have regular siren tests every first Saturday of the month at noon.

Hi Woody, I'm 68 and remember as a child having regular drills at school in the 50's and early 60's. When the sirens would go off we were supposed to line up and march single file down to the fallout shelter that was in the basement of the school. Also we were taught to crawl under our desks and cover our eyes if there wasn't time to get to the basement. These days the sirens are used for tornado warnings and they are still tested the first Monday of the month. Most younger folks don't even know the original purpose of the sirens. Back in those days they wouldn't have worked to warn of tornadoes since they didn't have the technical ability to see what the weather was doing that they have today. Living and growing up in Iowa the threat of tornadoes has always been a regular yearly thing so the sirens turned out to be a good investment but I'm not so sure that the fallout shelters have been kept up so they would be ready if we needed them.

G'day Woody from all the wayyy Down Under ... There is a lot of love all around the World for your Synth/Keyboard reviews and they are surely missed. The main reason is the passion you have for these instruments along with the joy you clearly experience from playing them. Sincere thanks for all of your time, knowledge and effort. By the way my favorite video was the one with the Yamaha Motif XF (part 5) where you started swearing like a trooper when things got a bit confused with the sampler. Bring back the Synth reviews !!! My parents had some friends who had a bomb shelter (late 1950s). I got to tour it. The shelter was made just for a single family. I remember that it featured a hand cranked air filtration system, and they planted grass for the roof of the shelter that supposedly was to help with radiation absorption.

We still have air raid sirens in my state of Ohio and they all went off yesterday due to tornadoes. National Weather Service issued more tornado warnings yesterday afternoon in the span of about an hour since 2005 here (warning means there’s a tornado forming or already on the ground). I don’t know of any remaining bomb shelters like yours in my sector though. Cheers!

Born in 1960, in USA, I remember the air raid siren tests well. There were a few shelters in my neighborhood. My elementary school cafeteria was designated as a shelter. The university I attended has underground tunnels between buildings because it is next to an airforce base. The tunnels were great when the weather was bad. These days sirens warn of tornados and the like. But I feel that if I heard the sirens for a real nuclear attack, I would get to the highest location possible and simply watch the flash.

They show a great amount of concern for safety; I guess scandinavian countries felt particularly vulnerable during the most paranoid periods of Cold War... Very different to the UK. My father worked for BNFL so we technically had access to the local shelter- along with a few dignitaries- but he was not allowed to tell anybody about it. He told his family of course, but wasn't supposed to and was in breach of the Official Secrets Act for that- uncaught fortunately. Once he retired our entitlement ended and we would have had to use an interior door, pushed against the wall and covered with bags of soil- which is the UK recommendation as per the Protect And Survive scheme of the 80s. Oh and we would be told to paint the windows white too! And we don't even have Hesa Fredrik!

Here in Switzerland we have those shelters too, I have one in my home. Just the last week I had mandatory service in the civil protection and the task that was assigned to me was actually to check some of those shelters for compliance to the norms (state of the ventilation system, structural integrity, etc). Yours wouldn't have passed that check as the rubber gasket, the lock and other parts are missing on the security doors :-)
Normally we use those shelters as storage spaces, hobby rooms, etc, me I use mine as electronic lab, storage and server room. This is allowed by the law, with the condition that if an event where those shelters are needed happens, they have to be emptied and prepared for use as soon as possible.

🇨🇦 Hi ya Woody! So Awesome to see you again in a new video. Both Sweden and Switzerland take their safety and protection of citizens seriously. Everyone in Swissy land must serve a year in basic military and they ALL get to keep their hand guns when completed . Interestingly, Switzerland has auto detonation of all entry/exit points in case they were ever attacked. This is to ensure no enemies could come in with armored vehicles etc. I would love to have a bomb shelter place or even an abandoned silo. Hell, I would be happy even with a large cave...lol. And awesome that you speak the language. I always wanted to learn High-German language but it's pretty hard. So wonderful to see you again in a new video Woody. Thank you so much for showing us around the joint and the country's procedures and measures in case of attacks whether domestic or foreign. There is very strong and most likely inevitable war in our future with US, Russia, and China especially. Anyway, awesome video my friend and once again, so nice to see you out and about. 🤗 🍁 ♬

Doubt 2 years is gonna cut it, when you think how big todays nukes are compared to the ones that were dropped during WWII, Cities like Stockholm or Copenhagen would be levelled to the ground and uninhabitable for many years if it was the epicenter of impact. But Honestly as reason for an eventual attack would be to get their Fleet out to the North Sea, normal nukes would tactically seem a bad Idea If your own troops have to sail right thru.

In the Netherlands we still have air raid sirens in active use as well, nowerdays they are used for incident alerts, like fires factories or environmental accidents. They also these every first Monday of the month at 12 o’ clock. They want to replace it with a cell broadcast system for a few years now but those tests often fail. In the cold war era they built a bunker complex along the river IJssel, with a system to that could flood a large area to stop soviet tanks. The complex was secretly built in the 1960’s and was a secret until 1990 when it became obsolete. I have been in similar air raid shelters in Switzerland, they seem to have a lot of them there as well. Probably also because of their neutral state like Sweden.

I live in Switzerland and we have a reputation for still having a bomb shelter under every building (it's still law to construct them AFAIK). However I've not seen any here under residential buildings with those impressive blast doors.. not noticed any advanced filtration system for the air.. and I guess there may be locked rooms with gas masks and so on, but I've not come across one. They're not sign posted either.
There is a public shelter about 10 minutes away from where I live that can house 20000 people and supposedly has a hospital inside, although that relies in part on closing off the ends of a motorway tunnel. We test our sirens once a year in the spring at a designated time (it's the classic WW2 style sound).. and yeah the first time I heard that I thought "okay, well that's the perfect time to attack then" 😂
PS: Wind up radios are a pretty new invention aren't they? Maybe 1990s? I remember them and wind up lights being made for Africa with no electricity supply

We did Gas Mask Drills in the US Navy (I worked in the Fleet Hospital-like M.A.S.H. on TV). The masks have a filter, most likely the masks you have in that shelter if they're there at all, are not well maintained and wouldn't be safe if they were used in the current day because the filters would most likely be rotted out or too old. Anyway, the drill goes GAS GAS GAS! And we have 9 seconds to put the Masks on, anyone that went past that got tapped on the shoulder "you're dead, you're dead, and you my friend sadly have diseased", I think it was 9 seconds, could have been 20.

never a waste of money, to save its population from fallout two world wars and nearly nuclear war during the cold war people can survive these places are a god send i wished every country had these to protect from NBC nuclear biological chemical weapons. the UK government said that it would cost nearly 8billions pounds back in early 1950s to install a shelter in every home and office block so now its up to the contractor to decide if they going to be installed into days money that would be about 400 billion pounds sterling.

I remember in the 60's and 70's doing our Preparation for Nuclear attacks at School in the United States. Bend under the desk and kiss your %# goodbye. Visited a Missile Site, interesting to note that it takes 2 to turn the key, but even when they turn the key, a 2nd site has to also turn their 2 keys for the missile to fire (unless the other site was destroyed, then the missile would delay but launch, and once they launch, there's no way to recall them, they're up in the air and on their way.. Current climate welllll who knows... Another Fyi, some missiles aim for farmland to destroy the crops, no food, no chance to survive. Pretty scary :-(.

thank you!! onto your question, i like both but I think I prefer the Nord e-pianos and pianos, somewhat more characterful and the overdrive adds just the right dirt. organ is not fantastic on either (compared to the legend anyway, and hammond clones). I prefer the fatar action on the nord too, as the YC had some isseus there with noisy keys. always like the electro action (same as used on legend actually!). in other areas, the two keyboards are a close tie.
      hope that helps.

In the 1950s, people were very afraid of the atomic bomb that motivated Sweden and perhaps other countries to build these bomb shelters. Here in Portugal I am not aware that there are Bomb Shelters in buildings or houses. Portugal does not harm any country, Portugal is a peaceful country just like Sweden. Woody don't live with that fear. Our countries would be excluded from a nuclear attack. I cannot say the same for the USA. Unfortunately there are many countries that don't like the USA. If one day there is a nuclear attack I think it will be in the USA and in a big city like New York to make huge victims. September 11, 2001 is an example of what might one day happen to the USA, but in large proportions it could kill millions of people. But let's not live thinking about it. The USA knows what can happen and is on high alert 24 hours a day.

  • @pdsrenos

Very Interesting! Sadly it is clear that Sweden has become complacent in their preparedness. Not only would they only have minutes or maybe an hour or two to even get to the shelters; but even 48 hours wouldn't be enough time to get those back in service. It would take weeks of preparation without the stress of an imminent bomb hit. Those bomb shelters are just like masks are to covid, they look cool but will do nothing to protect you in any real threat situation.
