  • Aamakkulam, literally meaning the pond of turtles, is a safe haven for the fresh-water reptiles that inhabit these waters. The pond is part of Adukkathu temple, a Hindu temple in Kasaragod district which is dedicated to the goddess Mahishasura Mardini.
The temple is on a four-acre plot and is approximately 17,000 square meters in size. It is set against a pond and a forest grove. As per ancient practice groves and ponds are always placed next to places of worship. The grove here is dedicated to snake gods and is largely left untouched by visitors to the temple. The pond used by devotees for bathing and ritual cleansing before worship is made of laterite. It is known as Aamakkulam, probably because the pond is full of turtles.
The turtles of Adukkathu temple are fed as part of the daily rituals. Devotees believe that feeding these sacred turtles help mitigate hair loss and solve skin problems. There are three types of turtles in this pond and the unusual white ones with the soft shell are the major attraction for tourists. The forest department often adds turtles rescued from other ponds to this pond as the reptiles are protected in these premises and the turtles can safely use the grove for breeding and laying eggs.
Aamakkulam is part of the Bedadukka Grama Panchayath. The nearest bus station is Velakkunnu and the nearest railway station is in Kanhangad. It is also on the Kasaragod - Kanjangadu highway route and is around 15 Kilometers away from Poinachi junction.
