Ray Charles' "Georgia On My Mind" was so beloved by everyone that his version became the official Georgia State Song in 1979. Ray Charles was born in Albany GA.

The song writer wrote it about his sister who was named Georgia. It’s kinda sweet.

Hoagy Carmichael said he wrote it about the state, but maybe he was just trying to sell records.

@@ncthom88 Yeah in his autobiography he said he was trying to write the song about his sister but a friend said it should be about the state. This was before the song was written. So in the beginning he said Georgia twice, once for his sister and then for the state. Then the two Georgias got worked in by his roommate who actually wrote the lyrics of the song. Can’t remember his name and he didn’t get any credits BUT Carmichael sent him royalty check till the day he died.

Billy Joel wrote "New York State of Mind" with the idea of having Ray Charles record it, but he was never able to make contact with Mr Charles. That song has become a staple of the Billy Joel song book. Years later he told Ray Charles this story, and that's when their pairing on "Baby Grand" came about. It is an amazing collaboration!

Oklahoma! was the first Rogers & Hammerstein musical in 1943. Later, it was done as a movie in 1955 and the movie redone in 1999. It was the first musical in which the songs and dances were fully integrated into a well-made story, with serious dramatic goals, that were able to evoke genuine emotions other than amusement.

In 1961 Ray Charles was banned from playing in Georgia because he refused to play to a all white segregated audience. He was sued by the promoter.

Back up singers like this are so important and sorely missed today in todays music. this song was written by Hoagie Carmichael, famous piano player and song writer, and Stuart Gorrell in 1930. Ray was born in Albany, Georgia. The song was co-written in 1930 by legendary songwriter Hoagy Carmichael, who actually did have a sister named Georgia. However, he said, it was a sax player who suggested he write a song about the state. CBS has used the song when they show the Masters golf tournament, which takes place in Augusta, GA. It was also used as the theme song for the 1990's CBS show, "Designing Women"

That was her song and my stepdad loved her so much and on her birthday every year he would slow dance her around singing this song to her. They were married over 25 years when she died. Roger and Hammerstein’s musical “Oklahoma” was a broadway hit of the golden age of Hollywood!
Later a film with George McCrae and Shirley Jones of Partidge Family fame, led the cast.
The only critique that’s obvious is that Oklahoma doesn’t mention nor include the indigenous plight or does it ever refer to the land as Indian Territory, for which it was for nearly a century.
Ray Charles’s “Georgia” is a classic American sonnet of a beautiful land and an almost angelic existence we’ve never seen through the history and bloody past.

Australian though he was, this was my father's favourite song. It is also a very special song which you can take to mean Georgia State, or his feelings for a woman. Australian group Cold Chisel also did a version of this. It has been covered by many people.

I’m sure you’ve heard Georgia on my Mind before as it’s been used in several commercials and shows. It’s one of Ray Charles’s top hits. For your movie channel I would love to see you guys react to Mr. Holland’s Opus. It combines two things you can relate to…music and teaching. It features great music, including Mr. Ray Charles. ❤

#1 in 1960-61, originally co-written in 1930 by Hoagy Carmichael and Stuart Gorrell, it was originally thought to be written about Carmichael's sister but was later attributed to be about the State of Georgia. Covered by many artists, but Ray's is Infinitely Beyond Iconic!!! :)
P.S. Look into the 6:28 minute studio version of What'd I Say, Pt. 1 & 2, especially the 2005 Rhino/Atlantic Stereo Remaster! Things Will Never Be the Same!!! :)

Ray Charles spans the generations. He can rock (What'd I Say, Hit The Road Jack), he can croon (Take These Chains From My Heart), he can do the blues (Lucky Old Sun). In my eyes, he can do no wrong. This song is so soulful.

It's simply amazing how the man, Ray Charles, can transform any material. The first time I heard his rendition of Oh, What a Beautiful Morning....it was a revelation. It's a pleasant enough little tune on its own but Ray turned it into so much more! His interpretive skills are next level. That voice and his unique phrasings - an absolute joy.

Georgia On My Mind was first written and recorded by singer/songwriter Hoagy Carmichael in 1930, while he was up in NYC (guess he was missing home). And yes, the song is about the state of GA. Ray Charles is also from the state of GA, and his version of the song, recorded in 1960, is also an homage to his home state. Ray Charles' version was named the official state song of GA in 1979. By the way, the legendary jazz singer, Ella Fitzgerald, also had her own version of this song too, recorded in 1962. Her's is a slightly more jazzy version of the classic song. :)
P.S.: I hope you and your family had a blessed and wonderful Christmas! And I pray y'all have a spectacular New Year! God bless you. :)

The popular NBC TV series 'Quantum Leap' (1989 - 1993) used this song in the Emmy nominated season 2 finale episode 'M.I.A.' (and it would be used again in the season 5 series finale/last episode)....when you hear it in the context of those two episodes, it will bring tears to your eyes 😭
Also the TV series did actually win several Emmys and Golden Globe awards over its 5 season run. 😁

Interestingly, they couldn't get the rights to the song when the series first came out on dvd, so they had to replace it with another song. I believe it was because Ray Charles had just passed away and who owned the rights after his passing was still in question. The recent blu-ray release has "Georgia" restored.

I've been to many concerts over the years, most of the big names from the 60s, 70s & 80s. The one concert that stands out is Ray Charles. A longtime friend of mine waited all day first in line at the Bacchanal San Diego, (doesn’t exist now) so we had seats right at his piano. I could reach out and touch it. One of the backup singers led Ray to the piano, when he overheard us trying to speak low and then just started talking to us like we were his friends. Talk about mind blowing.

But when this song came on, I could see a tear in her eye as memories of home would come back to her. She told me some of them with this song in the background. Now I have a tear in my eye when I hear this song.

And yes, *Oklahoma!* (with the exclamation point) is indeed a musical - and the song of the same name is the state song of Oklahoma. It started life as a stage play on Broadway in the 1940s, then it was made into a movie in 1955. Might not be Jay's cup of tea, but there's some great music in it - aside from the title song, others which became 'standards' over the years include "Oh What A Beautiful Mornin'", "People Will Say We're In Love", and "Surrey With The Fringe On Top". Unlike more recent musicals you've seen, like *Grease*, this is much more 'old school', and the movie is from the tail end of what people often call the 'Golden Age of Musicals'.

Being from Georgia, I grew up listening to this song. In fact, it's the official state song of Georgia. Ray Charles has one of the finest, most emotive voices of any singer...ever, not to mention he is a fantastic piano player! He has an extensive catalogue of songs from country to soul to gospel. What'd I Say, I Got A Woman, You Don't Know Me, Baby It's Cold Outside, You Are My Sunshine and the list goes on and on. And yes, you have heard this in many movies, commercials etc.
I was privileged to see Ray one time. I was working on the John Schneider Back Home Special in 1980 and Ray was on the program. It was just him, his wife, John Schneider and about 10 members of the film crew in a beautiful old high school auditorium in Madison, Georgia. The only song he sang was Georgia but with that few people in that beautiful space, it was a very special and intimate experience. When he finished, everyone on the crew was wiping away tears. Now that was a good day!
