    Trust me, i've been practicing Silat atleast 7 years. My Master/Guru said to me "Losing the fight = Dead, Winning the fight = Jailed".
    Then who is actually WINNING?.
    my Guru said, "The one who AVOID the Fight".
    We can't compare any martial arts to another, and decide which one is better. Those who practice harder are the winner!

    actually silat is like aikido, kalari payatu and traditional kung fu. its not for sport at all. the art is for war. deadly. real fight is not like sport. making silat one of sport martial art is humiliated this art.

    I dont know why they call this Silat. didnt see any solid silat moves just more of a UFC thing. does this mean that silat is not really applicable in a real situation since silat also do not practice their techniques againts a full resisting opponent.

    • @Hirshir
      @Hirshir 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +philip lajom My point of view is that silat is more of a quick dispatch of an opponent, moves are design to end it very quick whether its through breaking a joint or some other means. If you look at MAUL his silats expertise are very quick ways of ending a fight applicable in a real situation as he teaches its to profesional law enforcement.

    People who aren't comfortable in their technique always resort to a kickboxing structure. No Silat here whatsoever, just sloppy MMA.

    • @harageilucid4352
      @harageilucid4352 7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      its the most efficient structurr for a 1v1 striking competition.it does always turn in to a kicmboxing match, because kickboxing is what works best to knock the other guy out quickly. and once you allow grappling youre also going to get things that look like bjj, wrestling, and judo- because those styles spent the most time actually fighting, they spent the most time developing techniques and strategies that work in a real fight.

    • @bunnieseatliverspots
      @bunnieseatliverspots 7 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Haragei Lucid I would just be cautious in what we're qualifying as a "real fight."
      I think we're quick to set MMA competition as the standard of realism. But we should remember that it's actually uncommon to face an opponent of near-equal size in a controlled, 1v1 environment - with rules guaranteeing your safety (relatively). That just doesn't happen outside of competition. In uncontrolled environments, it's more than likely that you'll be dealing with an opponent much larger than yourself, potentially armed, and possibly toting an entourage of friends equally interested in bashing your skull in.
      That's the sort of environment that arts like silat are designed for.
      Yeah, for 1v1 win an opponent of equal size, kickboxing is a superior structure. But it's lateral if not linear footwork and overly committal high kicks might not be best for multiple attackers, armed attackers, or unlevel terrain.
      Similar deal with BJJ - great for dealing with one opponent. Not so great for dealing with more than one attacker or armed attackers.
      There's also a reason that MMA, kickboxing, and BJJ has weight classes. Because those arts are trained for the ideal conditions I mentioned above...equal size, rules for safety, etc.
      If you compare BJJ grappling with Silat grappling, you'll notice that each art is a product of its environment. BJJ is all leverage based - used to move, off-balance, and control an opponent of similar size.
      Silat, on the other hand, utilizes a combination of leverage and pain compliance. Pain is used to encourage the desired movement in physically stronger opponents: attack their weakness to compromise their structure.
      An example of this can be seen in some of the Tarik Kepala variations - where Silat practitioners strike the kidneys to elicit a jerking motion in the opponent's back, while simultaneously manipulating the opponent's head as a leverage point. The jerking motion from the kidney strike compromises the opponent's structure, and the head manipulation capitalizes on that.
      Both arts - BJJ and Silat are totally valid...they're just products of their environments. They work where they were designed to work.

      @harageilucid4352 7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Eric Arroyo: sorry for the lare reply. I like what you said and i think we can have a decent exchange of input. To address your points...
      .....
      1) i think MMA is the best standard for realism that we have, for the simple reason that MMA is real fighting, with about the least restrictive set of rules that a legally sanctioned professional sporting event is going to get..
      ...
      2) well youre actually doing the same sort of prejudging yourself: plenty of fights are one on one vs someone relatively close to your weight class. I personally would say if you cant even beat one guy thats about your size then youre definitely not going to beat multiple people, or people much more powerful, or armed attackers... actually id say its unrealistic to think youll win against those odds regardless of what you train and id say that the real techniques for handling those situations are awareness, good social skill, and intelligent assertiveness... i will definitely concede that ground fighting is not the proper way to fight more than one or at most two people...
      ....
      3) id like to not be focused specifically on bjj but rather to say "grappling" .. its true that grappling is based on leverage but thats not quite the best way to understand its power.. submission grappling is a highly developed set of step by step procedures for controlling, and if necessry, destroying the human body.. take them down, control them, dominate the position, secure the submission or the choke.. guaranteed broken body parts or unconsciousness.. these methods have been refined for hudreds of years and theylook and work on the street or in the cage exactly as they look in the dojo or the gym.. something most arts cant say..
      ...
      4) weight classes will always exist when people compete. If the Silat community gets honest competition going you will eventually have them in Silat too..regardless of the art, men will usually beat women and the strongest and most athletically gifted men will usually beat the smaller or weaker men.. with equal knowledge and repertoire or techniques, the more powerful fighter usually wins..
      ...
      5) submission grappling does make use of the kind of pain compliance you mentioned... one example in jiujitsu is using the points of your elbows on the nerves of the opponents inner thighs to break their closed guard.. there are many other that come from certain positions.. catch wrestling is very well known for this too.. i dont know enough about Silat to speak on that but its cooo that you guys do it..
      ..
      6) I really dont know much about Silat except that its in a family of martial arts that seems to know a lot about using knives.. im not a fan of knives for self defense but they are damn effective if youre aim is to kill and i do believe anyone who is serious about self defense should learn some knife basics, and you guys seem to have as well developed or better developed understanding of knives as anyone in the world.. im sure theres more to your style and i have very much respect for every sincere martial art and artist.
      If you read all this then youre a champ in my book lol.. peace

    • @bunnieseatliverspots
      @bunnieseatliverspots 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      for the record, I'm not specifically a silat guy. I just know enough about it to know that it works where it was designed to. Honestly, I don't think there's much that we actually disagree on. All I was trying to illustrate in my comment was that "realistic" is a very relative term - and where we set the standard for realism is totally arbitrary and specific to cultural context. In some areas, where knife fighting is prevalent, fisticuffs may not be considered realistic, etc etc etc.
      My training straddles both competition-style fighting and street defense, which is why I have complete respect for both hemispheres. Specifically I train a combination of Jeet Kune Do (boxing, muay thai, wing chun, savate, integrated grappling systems) and Filipino Martial arts (Kali/escrima, Kuntao).
      Each of those styles works cooperatively with one another because they each have economy of motion. Mechanically, there's very little difference between the leverage in Dumog (filipino grappling) and the leverage in, say, Catch Wrestling. "All the same but different" as my instructor likes to say.

    People keep claiming " This looks nothing like Silat" Do you know why? because its a fight. A real fight. Or as real as we can reasonably get to in terms of legal authority. Real fights do not look like the fight scenes in Taken. They're messy ugly looking things. Many people have just grown accustomed to the romanticized view of it they've seen in movies.

    MMA is not a fighting style, it is a set of rules that says "you can punch, kick, and grapple" there are basic limitations on where you can hit people and obvi its a 1v1 unarmed format but thats it; youre free to use silat or wing chun or aikido or praying mantis flying tiger, or whatever you want. even though it says silat this was an mma style fight because they were allowed to punch kick and grapple and they both wanted to win. and the guy with the better mma skills did win. when its your ass on the line youre going to use what works - boxing, kickboxing, wrestling, bjj, judo. punching, kicking,and grappljng techniques and strategies that were developed and refined under the pressure of real fights.

  • @johndrake5467
    @johndrake5467 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    Hmmmmm.....so the rules of this fight were "If there's not enough movement on the ground stand them up." Based on the rules pretty much the only way to win on the ground was to ground and pound. (Plenty of movement). The guy in the black would have won under regular MMA rules. I heard the commentator state that both men had only trained in Silat. That's interesting because I saw moves that are similar to BJJ, but not as well executed. The guy in the black shirt had an opportunity to lock down half guard to keep white shirt from taking full mount but he was apparently not aware of that. Being "true to the art" is nice, but if the art lacks sufficient responses to certain situations....just sayin'. Props to both men.
