I grew up reading ROM and loved it. Great stories. Nice Michael Golden covers, too. Thanks for the review!
Great review.
Sal Buscema has been my inker for 12 years. We even collaborated on back stories in the IDW ROM series. Sal's last name has *no hard "e" in the second syllable of his last name. It's "Byew-Se-Mu". Thanks again for the review.
Wow thanks for checking out the video! I’ll get the name right next time 🙌
I’ve been waiting for 20 years to get this omnibus. Next I need a Sleepwalker omnibus
I bought the first issue off the rack when I was young. Much to my surprise, I loved it. and kept buying. I recently completed my entire ROM run, including all of the crossovers and appearances. It took a minute, but I can proudly say I now own every ROM appearance in Marvel.
Bill Mantlo was very underrated and deserves way more credit as a writer than he gets
Rom was the first comic I started collecting as a kid. So much nostalgic fondness for the Silver Spaceknight. Loved the HP Lovecraft feel to the Hybrid storyline and Rom's encounter with the Devourer of Planets.
Man bun Gem!!!! I thought we went back to the fade for a minute!
Or as I call it "Gem as a mexican cartel member" ☠️🤣🤣🤣
@@raidensnake9471016Where do you think Gem’s gotten his money over the years for the statues and omnibus in the Gempire? Longtime viewers have always known that he’s been moonlighting as a drug kingpin this entire time. /s
All jokes aside, I think the hair’s alright. Gem’s been experimenting with different hairstyles for a while now, but the faded-buzzcut will always represent the classic years of the channel to me. At the end of the day, we’re all here for the haven of wholesomeness that Stephen provides to the comic book and pop culture communities.
Glad to see you back reading and reviewing 👍 thanks for review , might pick it up 👍
Not sure HOW I missed this episode! ROM is AWESOME!! I still have my set, grew up w/ ROM! I was very pleased when they released these omnibus'. Great vid
This will be my 1st time reading Rom also. I went with the same dust jacket shown here. Looking forward to getting the Romnibus
Dude, You will Love it. I have the original 75-issued run. Just hoping a deal is struck where we see his return or even a movie.
Around 2008-2010 I knew writer Bill Mantlo had been in a terrible hit and run accident around 1992. But had never heard anything else after it happened. So I read a interview some where. Where it stated where his brother lived in NYC. So I tried three different numbers. Identifying myself just as a long time fan. Andwas looking for his brother Mike. To my surprise later that afternnon he indeed was one of the three numbers I had called. He was kind enough to reply to me. We talked for about 45 mins. About Bill, how he was doing and his comics he wrote during his career. I asked him my theory was correct about Rom. He agreed I was right on the money. Bill basically took the human looking alien Klaatu and his 8 foot tall robot bodyguard/space cop. From The Day theEarth Stood Still (1951) And merged them into ROM. The Dire Wraiths are a combination of Invasion of the Body Snatchers(1956). And the female Dire Wraiths and Hybrid characters. Were very much like the Xenomorphs from Alen/Aliens movie too. If you watch this 2nd scene from TDTESS (1951) It resembles the first battle Rom has with the National guard. Rom also fought the National Guard as well. th-cam.com/video/K6iF5sINVns/w-d-xo.html
Thanks for sharing
I bought the toy first and then saw it had a comic. Therefore I had to buy the comic too.
I always had to choose between ROM and ASM. ASM eventually won out.
Dire Wraiths are so cool though.
The only issues of "Rom" I ever bought were the later ones drawn by Steve Ditko. But, this omnibus looks really interesting and entertaining. I'll probably buy it.
It's revealed that the Dire Wraths were the Bastards of the Skrulls, plus there were two types of Dire Wraiths.
The Science and Witch Wraiths.
ROM was a cool comic bitd. I remember reading it when it was coming out. The Dire Wraiths were some cool villains.
Keep up the good work big guy! You have the best collection that I have ever seen
Fantastic review brother!, I loved ROM when I was younger but I totally agree with your review, I think it is way to dated now for me to re-read!, I have to be choosy with my omni purchases these days so I think I’ll pass, but thanks again, for an in depth, honest review!! 👍👍👍
When you think of the dynamic between him/his species and their enamies it makes perfect sense. He is built like an old school robot (tangable hard steel) and his enamies are made of mist (non tangable) and so they are total opposites.
I remember this comic from back in the day, now I feel old!
One of the pinups in the back was an ad for the original action figure. I called the Dire Wraiths the Dire Straights (70s-80s rock band) until my dad corrected me.
Just got this in the mail the other day. Can’t wait to read it.
Loving the omni content bro, never read ROM might pick it up 🤔🤔👍
Damn bro you should've been reviewing omnibus for years this is a great idea
I have lol, check out my recent reads playlist
16:26 Ah Gem I was taking a drink when you said that and just blew it everywhere haha, “Mentos & the freshmaker” hahaha.
That Mike Zeck variant cover is for Vol 2. The other variant for vol 1 was by Sal Buscema and it’s the splash page from issue 1
Oh snap
Understandable. There are so many variants lately. Oh, and the standard cover for Vol 2 is another one by Frank Miller.
@@robertrichard7311Isn't the other cover by Bill Sienkiewicz? For Rom Annual #2?
You’re correct. I missed the obvious signature on the cover. See, Gem? lol 🤦🏻♂️
@@robertrichard7311 😂
This was very interesting. I know nothing about ROM
Definitely heard a lot about this book but know nothing about it myself so this was a great video it gave me a good idea of what to expect. I think I might pick up the micronauts omnibus but still on the fence with this one .
I just got done collecting the entire original series in single issues!
The Dire Wraiths are some of the nastiest and deadliest villains. Kinda like the Brood with magic. I’d like to see them interact with Marvel’s Cosmic cast.
This book IS awesome , Buscema did a great work for years👏
Rom and Micronauts… two of the best obscure series from the 80s.
Never read Micronaughts. I think there’s an omnibus coming for that too
🔥🔥🔥🔥 this is great ROM has affected other Marvel trades because of the licensing issues, theybwould either blackout out his face or nkt print the issues if he guest stars
Buscema’s Variant Cover looks fireeee
Ok, decide between these: "Storytime with Samurai Steve" or "Ram.....the XXX parody movie of Rom" starring adult superstar Qui-Gon Mimosa!
Interesting that Rom never killed Dire Wraiths. I never read Rom comics as a kid, but always assumed he was disintegrating those filthy villains with his high-tech blaster! Especially with how vile and disgusting Dire Wraiths were. Thanks for the review and the info. The art looks great in this omni, but your critique about the dialog is a turn-off for sure. I know the style was meant to inform the reader, but taken in context of the story, sometimes that style just doesn't age well. Also, always thought Rom was a robot - never knew he was a guy in a suit! LOL!
Black Bolt was married to a Dire Wraith Inhuman named Avoe.
Finally a conclusive explanation of ROM. It was too much for my mind in the 80's. Gave up after 5th issue.
But was he cool looking. ROM and Micronots was Marvels attempt to cash in on Transformers.
Uhm, both came out years before the Transformers.
Wow....were u there ?
Wow....were u there ?
It’s called history. These are facts not in dispute by anyone but you.
@@billiondollarman3847 Yes. Micronauts the toy came out in 1976 and ROM the Spaceknight toy came out in 1978. The comics came out in 1978 and 1979 with Micronauts first and then Rom. The Transformers did not come out until 1984. Your statement is totally incorrect and ignorant of the fact!
Hey buddy Spectacular Spider-Man #27 was Miller's 1st Daredevil released Feb 1979. John Carter Warlord on Mars #18 was Miller's 1st cover and published work with Marvel released Nov 1978. Most of Miller's Daredevil including #158 was before Rom #1 in Dec 1979. So not sure where you got Rom was 1st cover by Marvel?
I thought it said that in the forward… maybe I read it wrong
I have a Rom #1 9.8 CGC SS Signed by Miller and when you said that I got excited, but then realized it can't be true. I have the John Carter #18 in 9.8 CGC and 9.6 CGC SS Miller. Love me some Frank Miller!
I'm hoping the MCU gets a reboot. This time staying much closer to the original comics. Characters, stories and plot lines wise. I think director Sam Raimi would be the perfect director. To do a trilogy of Rom movies. Based off these stories by writer Bill Mantlo and artists Sal Buscema and Steve Ditko. I think it should be given a strong 1979-85 timeline vibe/feel to it. And a music soundtrack withoriginal music/themes for Rom and the spaceknights. But also using music from that era as well. There's a very low budget cheesy 1987 SF movie. Titled The wraith with a very young Charlie Sheen, Randy Quad and Clint Howard. The opening sequel is kind of how I think the first Rom movie intro/opening should feel/look. th-cam.com/video/NNJ-t6O0-ng/w-d-xo.html
Me encanta
I’ve never even heard of this comic, looks pretty funny, he just gets beat up all the time? Haha.
👍
Oh the Black Hole Sun?? Are Soundgarden in that issue?
Na lol just the black sun
When they had good writers not the modern woke ones we have today . There is a huge difference in how they made comics in the 70s and 80s the peak of marvel comics . Dialog and story telling that made More sense and without writers putting their feelings. into comics and just being professional. Something modern readers wouldn't understand today because they are born into a fully demoralized era by now. But these stories are gold and nostalgic fun no politics no Left wing 🍗 garbage like today's marvel written with just repetitive stuff done over and over again . Boring story telling . Just 70s and 80s escapism like comics should be but it's forgotten so I think this ROM omnibus kicks butt I'm glad we finally have it as an omnibus . Rom .
Looks awesome.
bro you look like a samurai
I know there’s a lot of love out there for this but your review has just confirmed my decision not to get this. I didn’t like it in the 80s and I don’t like it now. It just seems derivative, cliched and doesn’t seem to have improved with age at all. Which reminds me I must get round to selling my issue no 1. Great review though man
Exactly what the reviews are for… to determine if it’s something you’ll get or pass on 🙌
I will tell you how it ends. Rom and Brandy Clark becomes Adam and Eve on Galador and got busy almost immediately in order to re-populate the world. The End.
Hey, Gem Mint! Please do a review of CrossGen's "Sigil" Omnibus from Marvel! It's a terrific space opera more people should know about!
Thanks for the request

lol written like it was from the comics
Wow the Hybrid story was a classic. Mantlo captured the X-Men perfectly. If you didn't like it, you just don't know who the X-Men really were. X-Men now a days is not what the X-Men were. Also to have a problem with super hero fights you don't seem to understand that people loved the heroes fighting. How bland would it be if they just automatically worked together. Young comic fan judging past comics smh
I probably won't get this one, but this was a really thorough and well done review. Love when you do these, thanks Gem!
Thanks! Been on a reading kick lately. Reading Kirby’s Fourth World 😳
@@GemMintCollectibles I have that but haven't checked it out yet, hope it's good!
@@GemMintCollectibles Kirby is the 🫅🏼 imagine if he never survived WW2...
Gem you're a cool guy. Shave that dirty grey beard and get your hair cut man.
Gonna be honest my man, the hair ain't it lol
Probably gonna cut it
@@GemMintCollectibles it looks dope tied up dude
@@GemMintCollectiblesThink the brother meant tied up. Loose, it looks good imo.
Gem needs a cut. Dope review of the book though
