We received a batch of limited Eastman SB59's with Bare Knuckle Stormy Monday humbuckers. Luckily we also had the SB59 with Lollar Imperials. Time to compare some pickups!

Eastman's vintage antique sunburst finish, to me, is one of the best recreations of actual vintage Les Pauls. So beautiful

I prefer the Lollar pickups personally, not that the Bare Knuckles sound bad .The difference being the Bare Knuckles sound like the highs are a little rounded off. What I like from a PAF type pickup is for them to be clear , almost like and overwound single coil .

I really do like the fact that you used two similar guitars and played roughly the same thing in the same order. Made it really easy to go back and forth between the tones for comparison. I'd have to say that I favor the Imperials as they have a more full midrange that makes them a bit smoother and fatter then the Stormy Mondays. Clicking the sub button now. Thanks.

Literally impossible for me to say which sounds "better". They both sound amazing. And they do there own thing. That would be a hard choice.

No need for a choice: take all of them!

They're both sound very similar and they both sound absolutely fantastic. The Lollars seem to be a little fuller sound and possibly more responsive to your picking attack, but if you increased the treble a little bit on the Lollars and lowered the lows just a touch slightly they'd sound even closer.

Best side to side demo of two different pickup models I've ever heard. Well done, brother! I can clearly hear woody sweetness on the upper mids and highs, and a rounding off of the bass..tighter in the low end, and overall more vibrant dynamic range on the Stormy Mondays..at least that's what my ear is hearing, and it makes me want some! Lol. These sorts of things are always so subjective. Love this so much, bud, and thank you again for the review.

These are both great pickups. The star of this video is the wallet-emptying amp, though. Wow. Just a wonderful round tone.

I have a set of Stormy Mondays in my LP and find the neck a bit wooly but it’s still is a lovely tone, just not under gain....great video and playing! Need to get my hands on an Eastman and try it out

Hi Max, both pickups sound great and in excellent PAF style... They sound very similar because they probably have the same construction characteristics and responses (7.1 KOhm neck and 7.7 KOhm bridge) and therefore it is difficult to choose between them... Congratulations on running!

  • @michaelgarrison7066

The Lollar pickups have a bit more sustain and are a little cleaner at lower to mid volume levels. Each pickup has comparatively the same audible tamer, the Lollar pickups have a little more sustain in the fade and seem to sing as they fade in sound volume....

Those are lollar custom wound imperial pickups made EXCLUSIVELY for Eastman... not your run of the mill off the shelf lollar imperial pickups that just anyone can go get.

Firstly, some lovely playing there, both options sounds so warm and full although Lollar gets my vote here. I had Stormy Mondays in an early PRS Standard 22, they sounded amazing but the guitar weighed a ton. Eastman is. a brand I've not really looked up before, maybe this will prompt me to check some out

Went in thinking I’d prefer the Imperials, but surprisingly, I loved the Bks and it wasn’t even close. They were more articulate overall and had better more balanced mids.

  • @BwanaTube

Bare Knuckles would be my choice if I played mostly aggressive overdrive sounds, as they certainly live up to their name. But my default is mostly clean, and the Lollars sound more balanced and detailed for cleans. Possibly the difference could be tweaked with a bit of height adjustment and EQ, and they both sound great, and fare better than other PAFs in comparisons I've heard. I lean blues and jazz, so the Lollars will be my choice, but if I leaned rock, the Bare Knuckles would certainly fit the bill.

Thanks for an incredibly thoughtful comparison vid - absolutely spot on! Both sound great but I'm finding the Lollars just a bit more to my taste on my studio headphones - somehow a little 'fuller / warmer harmonically'. I can't wait to get my hands on an Eastman - HK dealer doesn't carry solid bodies (go figure!) and even now travelling to Korea and/or Japan is only just easing up - China (and by default HK) has been a bit of a pariah throughout the Covid thing. Sigh.

i just bought a player series MIM telle HB HB from japan.. bought lollar imperials and will get them put in soon. i dont even play guitar, i just collect them, the both pickups are amazing. the fender HB,s are made to a price and sound cheap.

Perfonally I think both sound great but prefer the 1st one. Both really mellow sounding.. Dig it. What settings/pedals are being used? You seem to rock out some amazing tones (of course GREAT Fingers from Sasha) but wondering what settings are being used in the amp or pedals? The mellow tone is so great... Make a Kemper profile Sasha?

    • @maxguitarstore
      @maxguitarstore  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Thanks man, glad you like it!! I'm not using any pedals, this is just the amp. Master very high, gain very low. Eq settings are a guess but I believe it was bass around 12, mid around 10 and treble around 1. Might look into that Kemper thing, but might take some time. I don't even know how to turn it on :D - Sasha

@@maxguitarstore is that tone that you use (which I have heard a few times already. Remember the Les paul black one m2m) that also produced this mellow tone. Is it a typical tone for a two rock?

The Lollar sound most familiar. As in, most like many other high quality PAF's. The Bare Knuckle are more unique to me. A bit like the Evans pickup tones. Deeper and more hollow sounding. If I was buying my first set of PAF's, I'd pick the Lollar's. If I already have PAF equipped guitars, which I do, I'd pick the Bare Knuckle's for a more unique sounding guitar. Think Jeff Healey tone, IMHO.
