I have an 04' Forester, with the same alternator. Fyi, pretty much everything he says "will come right off", took forever and a day to get off. And the times he said "it might take some doing" (or whatever), came off with no resistance. The top cover that comes off first, took lots of tapping on the ears to come loose, then it finally came off....with the armature attached. Trying now to get the armature free. The first 2 plastic phillips head screws do not just come loose. I had to use a impact screwdriver and tap it 3 or 4 times, before they came loose. The 3rd one I can't even get to. Had to tap on the cage forever, to get the windings loose, then I could get to the 3rd plastic phillips screw. Good luck everyone!

Thank you very much for making this. I rebuild my ej255 with nearly everything new or painted and I was worried to mess with the alternator. I have followed your video and it’s going well. 💪🏽

Painting the aluminum case will reduce heat dissipation by around 15%

Nice video here... get's right to the work, no fluff, no extra chatter. I've got a tip to add. For that third, hard to reach screw, you can start to back out the magnet to make a little more space. And there's a opening on the OUTSIDE of the cage (at least mine had it) where it offers a better angle at that sucker. Also use a spritz of PB right on those screws.

Nice! Glad to hear some positive feedback!👍🏻 when I painted my alternator I couldn't find any videos on how to do it so I figured it out and made a video to help the next guy!

Did you check if the voltage regulator, diodes and/or brushes were Ok, before reassembling it? When you buy a 'remanufactured alternator', do they replace the diodes? Thanks for video.

how do you replace the brushes?

@@--SubaruSwapVWBeetle That third screw is a pita. I couldn't get mine to come out. If I want to go further, I'll have to de-solder the coils, or drill out the screw where it comes through, find a longer one, and asemble it with a nut on the back. You can get the brushes for $13 shipped If I got as as far as you, I would've done it. Maybe replace the bearings too. Actually a whole kit with bearings and all the electronics is $30 buck.s So that might be worth it as well, and You have a completely re-manufactured alternator. New ones are around 200 bucks.

Well my cover didnt slide off it pulled the hole unit apart tried knocking it through with the 24mm
Nut on shaft and all it did ws shag the nut and thread up in well new alternator now 😭😭😭

I had thought disassembling the alternator on my 02 Impreza would have been the same as in this video. However I ran into a similar issue as weaver, so maybe no?
I had to knock the armature out of the front housing, sadly marring the threads a bit. The stator coil remained with the front half of the housing and the armature and rectifier circuitry with the back half, severing the connections between the stator and rectifier in a most unpleasant manner.
Eventually I was able to remove the armature from the back half of the housing by threading the 24mm nut back onto the armature, clamping the nut into a vice and giving the back half a good yank.

Can you swap 2012 Crosstrek 110a guts into an older cage? We have a spare alternator here from one.

I did. The votage regulator was attached to the magnets. That was the part I said you need to angle the screwdriver to get the screws out was holding in the regulator.
