In Australia I used a Toyo Open Country MT and on rough dirt roads I had to use minute glue every evening to repair numerous half chipped off spots on all of the tires .. Now I have Maxxis Razr AT, a hybrid between AT and MT being very content with them.
Your mention of M/T tyres performing poorly on packed snow was very useful. This behaviour, and the reasons for it, was something I hadn't been aware of.
Hallo. Very nice to see a Defender offroad in Europe. That leads to my question. In european winter I stay in Western Australia, the 4wd heaven, but in countries of the EU, even driving on forestal roads is forbiddeen. In Belgium You get for example a fine of 1200€ and they can seize Your car. So, question: what is allowed or possible in Switzerland? A positive answer would be the best.
If you liked the Cooper tires in 33" the ST Maxx are great. It is considered a hybrid between a Mud and All terrain. I am on my 3 set run on an 05 Toyota Tundra double cab here in snowy Northern BC Canada.
Thank you very much for another excellent video! In one of your replies below you wrote the 285/75 Toyos were mounted on 16x8 ET-20 Modular wheels. And I believe you mentioned 30mm spacers elsewhere… Are you using the spacers with the 8” wheels / 285 tires? Also, if you would be so kind, I’d love to know if you changed the fender flares (extensions d’ailes) for wider ones. Thanks again for your great videos!
Very well done, thank you. I personally do not like KM2s for the same reasons you guys tossed them. I do like Toyos but they are ridiculously heavy, but you can run them until they wear down to the belts.
I drove around with Bf goodrich for years (km1). When Bf goodrich came out with the Km2, I thought it was very bad for the wear of the tire. It wears out very quickly. For the rest, the Km 2 is a good tire. Because of the rapid wear and tear, I switched to the Toyo open country mt 255/85/16. And I am very satisfied with that, and have been driving around with my 2nd set for 6 years now. You make a good choice with the Toyo Mt.
May i ask... I remember you going to Australia... Which tyre would you recommend for high heat, gravel roads, lots of tarmac, and then a small bit of heavy off-road? I live in Malawi and have lots of tarmac and potholes to get to where I really want to get (Safari!). Thoughts please
Maxxis MT-762, All year around, Worth a look, I run em in 255's and Happy enough to purchase again Toyo's soft tread wear out too fast for the asking price
Another great MT tire is the Goodyear Wrangler MTR Kevlar. I am very impressed with its performance. However they suck in snowy and icy roads. But anywhere else they are amazing. 😊
In my opinion you should use the rubber ones. The rounder, the better. JK - I ran 255/80/R17 for years. I switched from BFG KM2s to a similar sized Goodyear Duratrac. The Duratracs are a much better all around tire and do not give me fatigue on long trips. Handling and fuel economy improved. Engine performance greatly improved. The mud tires are great in the mud, but the extra weight taxes the vehicle too much and the tread pattern does not perform in wet or winter conditions as well.
I do have 3 vehicles with the BFG KO2 and I can attest to what you said. They work much better that MT tires, but not as good as a true winter tire. They do work pretty well though! Problem with real winter tires is, that they are not available in large sizes. So 35" or 37" size. This is the reason I went with the KO2s. I would love the NOKIAN tire in a 35/37" size for 17" AND 18" wheel option.
@Ralf Hiller I don't know if this helps but Arctic trucks offer 32 - 44" winter tires and 17" wheels. Wheel size for 35/37": 17x10" inpress -52 boltcirkel: 6x139,7 (5,5") Those wheels fits Toyota Hilux 2006 - 2015 and Landcruiser from 2003. If you live in The USA Custom offset, might be able do find wheels that fits your vehicle. The Nokian Hakkapeliitta LT2 and Nokian Hakkapeliitta LT3 appear to be readily available in the US in 35", the size to look for is 315/70 R17. I hope this helps :)
@@Poacher91 thanks a lot for the information. I was aware that in Iceland they have large winter tires, but so far I have only seen them with 15" wheels. 17" wheels would be great news. The bolt pattern from the land cruiser won't work, I would need 8x6.5" . But wheels are not the problem. I will check the arctic truck website. I appreciate the info!
@@ralfhiller9043 Hi, you are welcome. The only arctic truck online store I could find that was on arctic truck Norway's website. I hope you are able to find wheels and tires that fits your need :)
I drove to cape north in december on new KO2. I loved them. However they could never beat nokian snow tyres with spikes on the snowroads. not even close! We hired a van 1 day for a trip and you feel safe at 110+ km/h on snow roads. With the hilux (2015) on new ko2's i felt safe up to ~75 km/h max. I drove 107.000 km on my first set BFG KO. Now have ~20.000 km on my KO2. As i drive 90% road but the 10% offroad I do look for a challenge I feel it's a good tyre.
The BF Goodrich mud terrain tires don’t have the snow mark, so it’s not allowed in some countries during the winter, the all terrain tires from BF Goodrich have the snow sign, so that’s Ok for winter.
BFG All Terrain KO2 is an excellent tire on dry road and gravel, not so bad in mud. But... It is a nightmare on wet road and snow due to the verry rigid and strong natural rubber used for the compound. It is a tire made to last, and to resist. But not for winter and wet safety due to it's compound.
Cela va dépendre de la configuration moteur. En effet si tout est d'origine mieux vaut rester dans les tailles de pneus standard. Mais la différence entre 32' et 33' n'est pas énorme.
I had a 35" km3 on the Troopy... Didn't like it. Too wide. The 285/75/16 it's great. I've tried the Toyo 255/85 and they are awesome but not for a 3500kg Landcruiser. Now I want to give a chance on the Michelin XZL 255/100/16

Thank a lot for your message. For sure the seasons we experience here throughout the year won't be the same in your region. You might wanted to say 52° celsius during summer time? Which tyres would you recommend for those high temperatures?

Mud tires are for mud. Specialized. All terrain makes most sense for overlanding.

Definitely not MT. You need a HT or a AT. From your description, you should get Hankook AT2

Are you running a lift to get the 285/75R16 in there and what wheel offset so you have?
+2 inch lift & -20 offset
What pressure do you run on the 235/85r16?
Depends if on road or offroad and how loaded is the car
