Anchoring ALONE in BRAZIL After OCEAN SAILING For 3 Weeks [Ep. 75]

  • Can we enter the closed country of Brazil? We need to enter to make repairs after our longest passage at sea. After over 25 Days of sailing across the Atlantic Ocean from North to South we try to find a safe place to anchor, rest, and get our bearings in the deserted jungle coastline.
    #sailing #bluewater #sailingaroundtheworld #brazil
    Our pesky sailboat causes a bit of a traffic Jam as we near the coast just outside the Campos Oil Fields in Brazil with a giant cruise ship and other passing freighters and tankers. The water changes color as we close in and sadly bypass the large city of Rio de Janeiro. Our boat dog, Roxy, finally get's some sniffs of land, but is it just a teaser? Finally, we spot a protected cove and the draw of a full night of sleep no longer offshore changing shifts is so ever tempting, so we launch the drone and inspect.
    For those wondering about our boat damage from the collision, keep watching our channel to discover the damage exactly the moment we do!
    So who is this crazy sailing couple making fun videos to share? Well, we are Kate and Curtis. We both sold up and headed out to sea, with the goal of sailing around the world via Cape Horn and the Cape of Good Hope. We brought our mixed rescue dog along with us as she loves sailing and swimming too!
    Our boat is a year 2000 J Boats J/46. We searched for 3 years for our perfect sailboat for sale, when we found it, we knew it was the one. We spent 6 months re-fitting it in Rhode Island and then went for our shakedown voyage in Maine. We stopped in Annapolis for a bit to do some more refit work and offshore modifications, then we set off to the open sea. We went to the Bahamas, Miami, US Virgin Islands, BVI, Grenada, Carriacou, St. Maarten, where we enjoyed outdoor adventures, scuba diving, and have now did an Atlantic Crossing to the Azores where we had a chance to fly our DJI drone (and learned how to fly a drone from a boat) and one of our favorite past times, mountain biking. After leaving the Azores we sailed to Tenerife. From there we have left on a huge voyage, transatlantic again, this time to South America as we head for our goal of rounding cape horn to enter the pacific ocean. We have sailed over 10,000 bluewater miles to date.
    More about us at www.sweetruca.com
    Enough of this, we hope you enjoy our relaxing video on #sailingsunday!

    Hi! Nice to hear about you two after so loooong! Also very interesting to see your vision on Brazil.
    Apparently, when passing the shore of Rio de Janeiro you did faced REALLY bad waters! They almost certainly come from the "submarine emissary", which was built on 1975 to throw the city's sewage 3,6 km into the sea from Ipanema beach. It goes at a rate of 6.000 liters/second... Depending on the currents it goes on many directions. Sometimes even to the beaches, as a revenge from the sea :) On 2009 another one was built, at Barra da Tijuca, throwing 1.200 litres/second into the sea... Big s•••! Really hope you managed to not let water inside the boat.
    The Baía de Ilha Grande is one of the most beautiful sceneries of our coast. It has many places to anchor, some marinas and many interesting people that, I believe, may have given you assistance by now. Hope you've had good times there and the repairs were fixed. Well, this we'll see on the next chapters of you adventure!
    Thanks for sharing your adventure!
    Oh, by the way, I believe you have the "Patagonia and Tierra del Fuego Guide", by Mariolina Rolfo and Giorgio Adrizzi. The couple spent more than 11 years there, testing and mapping more than 400 anchorages. It's also has the region's history and many tips from preparing the boat to dealing with the region. A must for sailing there. Let me know.
    Good winds and vibes!

    Another great video! What is the current plan for rounding the Horn? Is it too late to do so wisely this summer (winter in Argentina)? Does one wait until November and enjoy South America while doing so? Also, have you used your SSB? I have one sitting in a box and am debating installing it, although with an IridiumGo it seems redundant.Thoughts?

    • @SailingSweetRuca
      @SailingSweetRuca  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Ron! Since you are a patron, we will fill you in on the Cape Horn strategy in detail via email ;-) About the SSB, we haven't used it for anything productive in 3 years. Just practice and tests. It does work well. Its a nice comfort to have as a fallback, no harm in having it aboard, but it seems like satellite technology is evolving so quickly it makes the HF obsolete. If we were starting from scratch we would probably just carry a spare IridiumGo or Fleet Broadband vs buying an SSB.
