Grafting Citrus Trees with the Patch Bud - Making a Fruit Cocktail Tree

  • Patch budding is a method of grafting citrus trees that is very easy and that gives a high success rate.
    In the past year I performed many patch bud grafts of citrus and found that it works very well as a technique for adding new varieties to an existing citrus tree to make a multi-grafted citrus cocktail tree. Although the particular graft demonstrated in this tutorial is of a Mato Buntan pummelo, I also found that patch budding works well for grafting orange trees, grafting lemon trees, and grafting lime trees. I expect that it would work well for any type of citrus.

    I learned about this in agriculture class. We each got our own citrus trees but instead of the patch procedure, we actually graphed the whole branch. It was very cool. My graph came out perfect and it grew to be a full grown orange tree with lemon tree branches growing out of it. It also produced oranges and lemons. It was pretty cool!

      basically(and extremely oversimplified) you have an orange tree.
      you patch a piece of a grapefruit tree on it.
      that patch grows into a grapefruit branch and produces grapefruits....on your orange tree....while the normal branches produce oranges.it saves a lot of space and time.....or like physicists say spacetime ;)

      @Fruitmentor  8 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      You're welcome! I removed the bark and pruned the branch after 3-4 weeks and not at the time of grafting. That worked well for me, but I would not be surprised if other ways work also. One thing that I might try in the future is to perform a scion graft such as a bark graft and then do the patch bud underneath as a backup in case the bark graft fails. In this case pruning the branch for the bark graft should also break the apical dominance and allow the patch bud to grow.

    I'm new here... what is the purpose of this? also are you growing different species of plants on one host plant in symbiotic relationship type ordeal? if so that's pretty weird

    • @Fruitmentor
      @Fruitmentor  6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      This particular technique is useful for grafting different kinds of fruit on the same tree. A farmer might use it to change the fruit he grows without planting new trees. For example, a new popular mandarin orange variety could be grafted over an old Valencia orange variety that is now out of favor in the market. Another reason for grafting is to combine a variety that produces superior fruit with another variety used only for its roots. This produces a superior tree.

    Why do you have to graft?
    Does this differ from simply planting seeds from the fruit and growing from there?
    Does grafting have a benefit to the fruit over growing from seeds?
    Does grafting change the flavor of the fruit vs seed planting?
    This is interesting! I don't know anything about gardening but this was a very interesting and educational video. I had no idea citrus trees were so prone to disease and pests.

      @CricketsBay 6 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      It is very important to graft certain types of food-producing trees. Some rootstocks are prone to disease. Haas avocados, though not citrus, are a good example of trees that will not fruit unless they are grafted. Commercial fruit cannot be grown on southern Loiusiana, for instance, if it's not grafted. It just won't produce quality fruit otherwise. Oranges in CA and FL would be practically impossible without grafting.
      I think he explains why to graft in this video: m.th-cam.com/video/bEsgiOspZhA/w-d-xo.html

    • @Fruitmentor
      @Fruitmentor  6 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      Citrus trees that are grown from seed take a very long time to produce fruit. It can be as long as 10 or 15 years. Some varieties will come true to type after this long period of juvenility. Other varieties will result in a hybrid which would often have terrible tasting fruit. Grafting avoids these problems. The rootstock that a variety is grafted to affects the fruit quality, including flavor and texture.
