The muffin tin was a stroke of genius, it looks like it was made for that purpose. I am enjoying retirement by working in my shop and catching up on your videos.

Glad to see you are using that "sacrificial" piece of wood when using the band saw. So many people try to make that cut and get their fingers too close to the blade. Life is a heck of a lot easier when using push blogs, sacrificial chunks and the like when using the band saw. Things can happen so fast that you can end with a piece of your finger back in your hand.
Also, could you comment as to when and when not to use gloves on angle grinders, belt sanders, and bench grinders. I see a lot of people making mistakes on these tools.

Looks good and solid and should be quiet running. It is amazing how much noise can come from belt guards on certain machines - especially after they get damaged. A friend of mine has a gas powered air compressor and you can hear that belt guard vibrating 1/4 mile away.

This is why I watch your videos. OMG, 0700 AM out in the shop. Over a year ago, I bought a 9 inch South Bend lathe and completely restored it. For some reason, I neglected to re install the belt guard and left it on the bottom shelf, thinking someday I would get to it. Well after hearing your story of seeing the loss of a finger, due to no safety belt, today the belt guard will get installed where it belongs. While I don't another belt guard, I am so looking forward to watching the video. Thanks again for this great video....Ken....Marina CA

Another fantastic video great work on the guard. A few days after watching this I was in a tractor supply store and happened to notice some dust caps for trailer axles there were several types and sizes as well as shapes but I did happen to notice one that had a perfect dome shape to it it was labeled Dust cap 2.72" part #122T the store code is 1075260 It looks to be the perfect shape and size for a future belt guard. I did enjoy the creativity and thinking outside the box that went into your guard as well.

Hahaha! Mrs tubalcain must surely have a good sense of humor! By this time, I'm sure she watches her kitchen utensils like a hawk. I think the muffin cup looks good. Without some pretty serious dies and a very big press, that's about as good as it gets. If you didn't tell anyone what it was, they would never figure it out. Excellent video as always. Thank you!

Great job, a lot of great information. The top screw could be replaced with a stud, that way you could hook the guard on the stud to make it easier to install. Also, Paint color has been a big issue in the South Bend Lathe Group. if you have a tractor supply store near you, they can normally match any paint Color that you need. or at least come very close.
    Keep up the good work.

I was going to suggest spinning a dimpled piece of soft metal to cover the shaft hole in the South Bend guard, but the cupcake method looks pretty good when everything is painted. Plus, you've already got the stock.
Back in the '70's, South Bend came out with a fiberglass spindle belt guard kit for the bench lathes. I'll only say that whoever designed it is probably cutting out paper dollies somewhere.

A little off topic; but muffin pans are great for temporary storage/organization of small parts & fasteners. As you take whatever apart, start loading the cups from upper left to lower right (as if reading text). When whatever it is goes back together just go in reverse. Caution... if the muffin tin is dropped/disturbed once loaded you can have a disaster. I have several in my shop, a couple each of 12 hole and 6 hole; they can often had at yard sales for mere pocket change.

I like Battleship Gray. Just a little darker than the stuff you used.
Good job though. Yes you can make a guard for the flat belt. It doesn't have to cover the whole thing. just enough to keep errant fingers out of it. I have no worries about it because you wouldn't let anyone else operate it without a thorough briefing and supervision. Good video.

Benjamin-Moore makes a near perfect color match for the Logan called Baby Seal Black, product # 2119-30. When I asked for it at the hardware store the sales clerk looked it up and mixed a quart of it while I waited. I don't recall the price -- which is good, if it had been very expensive I would certainly remember. It is a very good match for the original color.

The muffin cup is perfect. Not only is it a funny story, but it looks just like its counterpart on a huge 1940s Monarch lathe of 16 or 18 inch swing. You couldn't have done better. Just tape up the edges of the remains of the muffin pan before your wife slashes her hands on it when reaching blind into the cupboard. I don't want to see a video announcement that she's taken you offline in retaliation for her injuries! And do post the video of Mrs. Tubalcain's Revenge, when she clamps a 20-quart KitchenAid bowl to your Bridgeport table and sets out to make gingerbread in back gear for the whole neighborhood.
Please don't name the lathe Cupcake. Please.
I hadn't voiced an opinion about doing work off camera, but I was about to discourage it. I'm glad you're doing it on camera again. I know what it looks like, I've seen it before, but I like to see it again--especially the precision machining, but even if it's just the sander or the band saw. I don't care about the length of the videos. I "ditched the dish" because the content degenerated into incessantly repeated garbage. Like others, your videos and others are what I now watch instead. Keep it coming, as long as it's something you want to do.
I wish you hadn't shown all those Miller MIG machines, though. I had started looking at some of those this week, and that's feeding my acquisition fever! Wishing for a Millermatic, a spool gun, and a Syncrowave some day.
Hope your weather has warmed up. Down south, now two weeks since you filmed, it's in the 70s and 80s. Wonderful.

It's the cupcake tin by a landslide. I noticed though that given just a minutes more thought you might have laid out the cut on the cupcake tin so as to include some extra material on each side so as to produced an oval which would have given you room for a larger fastener. All in all though I think you did a great job, and I really enjoyed this video. Thanks

Your wife must be very confused when she finds things like that muffing pan in her cabinet ...
And I bet you keep a straight face and ask her "WHAT did you do to that pan?"
    Fortunately for me, my wife has a bad memory. So when I use the dishwasher to clean up auto parts or the oven to heat plastic, or the kitchen table to assemble a project, she mercifully FORGETS ! However, my 'honey do' list never gets any shorter either, she just adds more and more to it. :-}

Guard looks fine. Hope that you do not get whacked in the head with what is left of the muffin tin. I have made many trips to The Goodwill Store for bits and pieces for projects over the years. I find the "quality" of materials and design superior to Dollar Stores. Many of the treasures at Goodwill are old enough to have be made in the US during our "well built" era. I think the "off camera" parts add a little mystery. Your videos and commentary are great fun in addition to being instructive. Who needs late night TV comedy shows what we can get Mr. Pete skulking around the kitchen looking for project parts?

I liked the build and as far as time goes machining youtube videos replace tv shows. So you could make your show 30 min to 1 hour long and that would be fine with me. I prefer the real information on the machining youtube shows over 95% of the fantasy shows on tv. You make good videos and have good info in them so please do what you like to do and I will watch. So yes I am one of the people that like to see you do everything on camera but if that is not what you want to do then thats ok i will take what you give.

Hi Tubalcain. Excellent video as always. I could imagine you looking through Mrs T's kitchen utensils and getting 'busted' Haha. Anyway, a couple of times you allude to making part of the guard a different way. I'm guessing it might be with the slip rolls you haven't got - OR have you? Perhaps you've already made a video series on how you made some. I'm sure it would get a lot of views, and something that I would be VERY interested to see because I've often thought I would make some one day. Keep up the fabulous work, and I hope Smokey enjoyed the 'despicable' potted meat. Regards Mark in the UK

The insulator is a piece of rubber tubing on that gun. The copper/brass bent tube ahead of the gun handle that the contact tip, diffuser and nozzle connect to. Welding current passes through this tube and unless insulated it can arc out if it happens to touch and part that is grounded by the machine.
I am guessing that this is a Magnum 250L (Classic) gun.

If the top bolt was replaced with a pin, you would have a no-wrench installation. Hook the guard over the pin and then install the knob-screw.
If it vibrates, maybe a rubber washer between guard and bracket would solve that.

Regarding the color match: You should be able to take an existing painted part (tail stock, etc) to a paint store and get a custom shade mixed.

I use those cupcake pans for stuff like this too. Managed to get a small stash of rounded end ones, don't think they are for cupcakes, rather that thing you do with chilled chocolate when you make chocolate spheres...or maybe people like half sphere cupcakes, who knows.
The metal isn't half bad either.

Oh and you can darken the gray if you use spray can paint. You sprinkle the paint from a distance and it makes it appear darker. Unless you really get close you'll never notice it. Used that trick to blend in a few parts myself. Cheaper than repainting them the correct shade of gray.

When I take something apart I keep the nuts and bolts separated with the muffin pan i should not bother because I always knock the pan on the floor.
