    I appreciate that you showed the area you cleared by hand, and how it looks now.
    I recently bought a house, and have about half an acre of buckthorn to deal with. It looks pretty similar to the area you showed, with quite a few mature buckthorn trees. What is not visible in your video is the carpet of young buckthorn plants that completely cover the ground.
    I'm sure you had them too, but there was no foliage to see because it was winter when you were filming.
    It's good to know that there's light at the end of the tunnel for me.
    I have watched lots of videos about clearing buckthorn infestations, but yours is the first I have seen that shows the long term results of clearing it by hand.
    Seeing that has given me new hope that I can defeat this horrible invasive plant.

      Certain patches the young seeds germinate and came in really thick but most of the area at lest in my case the golden rod and grasses started to come in yr 2 and by yr 3 the grass and broadleaf plants shaded out and out competed most of the little buckthorn seedlings.
      You can go in yr 2 and give the whole area a good dose of triclopyr in the spring. But you will kill a lot of natural regeneration too.

    There's something so satisfying about watching a forestry mulcher do its thing!

    your continued battle with buckthorn reminds me of my own struggle on my property that I manage. When you say you cut the buckthorn out are you using herbicide on it? Usually when you cut it back it resprouts and its root system gets massive. I would recommend the use of herbicide to make sure the parent trees do not return. Another effective way to treating the disease is to create a one sex enviromint with the buckthorn to manage population increases with the plant. The berry producing trees are the female which should be the trees targeted. Furthermore, for the new buckthorn growth prescribed fire works really well on young trees due to the lack of fire resistance in the plant and roots system being so close to the surface. This will also help regrow your native plant species that are fire dependent and continue to provide browse for whitetail populations.
    cheers

    Some public parcels in WI are overrun with this especially in and around suburban areas. Years ago wildfires would keep invasive crap like this in check, not anymore. Good job! You'll definitely have healthier and happy wildlife.

      The only thing with fire though is it keeps everything in check. Fire sets back all the good natives too. Like dogwood willow etc. But yeah I definitely do agree there’s tons of areas like our area in the video where it’s just solid buckthorn that could be much better when taken out and with sunlight hitting the ground.

    Good on you for getting rid of this stuff! The city here is overrun with it. The deer here do bed in it and browse on the leaves and berries, so some people defend it. But the deer would do much better with native cover and browse species planted. And so would all the other wildlife. Good luck with the rest of your buckthorn removal and control.

      Thanks, I plan on spraying the stump sprouts of the buckthorn this spring with 24D and will cut out any the spraying doesn’t kill in the future. The more naive vegetation the better.

      @@PackerBacker7$185 per hour. 11hrs total. Not very practical if you had to do lots of acres but this little spot will never be solid buckthorn again. I’m going to plant more native and browse species and keep the buckthorn in check. This was a one time mowing and I’ll set back the brush with our tractor brush hog before it gets to big. I plan on spraying all the buckthorn stump sprouts this spring when they sprout up.

    great content, very knowledgeable for your age. Given the cost, did you consider a saw and herbicide for instant side cover that would also protect young growth instead of mulcher?

    • @wisconsinwhitetail9744
      @wisconsinwhitetail9744  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I did that small section by hand saw and brush hog. Probably 1/3 acre and wasn’t going to do that again LOL. Mowing it down obviously gets rid of the instant cover but I want to be able to manage it with just a brush hog in the future and keep most of the area 6ft and below. After 3 yrs it will be great bedding with tons of browse and cover.

    Do you think a brush hog will work?

    • @wisconsinwhitetail9744
      @wisconsinwhitetail9744  ปีที่แล้ว

      Definitely. You will need a serious brush hog to handle brush 6-8in in diameter. An average size 5ft brush hog for a tractor can handle brush up to about 3in in diameter. The forestry Mulcher does a better job chipping it with a finer finish and can handler bigger brush.

      @Wisconsin Whitetail Thank you! I'm about to get a JD 1025R with a 48" brush hog and chipper to deal with this stuff. Most of mine are less than 3". Can get the bigger ones with chainsaw or Stihl combi. I hope I'll be making the right choice. Homeowner use.

    Did you plant the elderberry?

    • @wisconsinwhitetail9744
      @wisconsinwhitetail9744  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      No, it came up on its own. There is lots of good natural regeneration in the section I already did. More than I thought would come up. Ash, boxelder, tons of dogwood, some mulberry, and yes some buckthorn too. But I plant on cutting out some of the buckthorn that sprouts up every spring.

    Any advice to tell my father in law who thinks all the Buckthorn on his land helps the deer and is not invasive? Lol

    • @wisconsinwhitetail9744
      @wisconsinwhitetail9744  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Not sure how ambitious you are, but I would clear a small area of it. 30x30yds maybe. Let sunlight do it’s thing for 3yrs and see the results. There should be a good amount of regen taking place after the 3rd year and there will definitely be more deer sign in that 30x30 yd circle then the rest of the open buckthorn around. If you don’t have time to clear it yourself you could just hire someone with a similar machine to do a small area 1/2 acre or less. But expect $500-$700. The area I had done was about an acre in size and took 11hrs at $185 per hour.
