Ustad Shahid Parvez Khan is respected & honoured by all who listen sitar as the foremost player of sitar in the world today. He is also respected for his unusual command on both Gayaki and Tantrakaari ang. In this baithak we bring you Raag Sahana, from the archival recordings of Bazm e Khas.

Ustad Shahid Parvez is the personification of total dedication to the art of Sitar baaj. Nothing that he does on his instrument may be regarded as anything but of the highest calibre He is the master of his own style of Sitar baaj, and has perfected it to very difficult and high standards. The alapkari that he employs at the outset of a raga performance redefines how the beginning of its exposition should be employed and developed. This is going out of vogue in this day and age due to the public wanting quick results from an artist. And for serious learners of Sitar, there is no better example available to try and emulate his baaj. He also has more seriously successful shagirds playing good Sitar now everywhere than anyone other Sitarist one could name. He has also fashioned and engineered his own kind of Sitar as an instrument with its own tonal characteristics.. We may rightly regard this an an important and unique addition to the characteristics of the Sitar as an instrument. Many Sitar makers are now trying to learn how to make Sitars of the high tonal quality as shown in the instruments the Ustad gets made for himself and his shagirds. The Sitar world owes a great debt to this great artist. The tantkari ang baaj which had nearly disappeared a couple of generations ago is now here for all artists to aspire to. His dexterity and tayyari continues unabated. Long may he continue to perform and regale listeners and learners of music.
