  • Today we have a bit of fun and go through my picks for the top 10 best and worst miniatures in the Middle Earth SBG. After making Middle Earth mini's for 20 years Games Workshop has some gems unfortunately they don't always hit the mark but we can have a laugh about it!

      Yes, I think this video would be better titled "unpopular opinions about miniatures". To be fair, I'm rather indifferent about the warg models and Ic don't know the guy with the ponytail.
      My favorites include the mumak, the corsairs, the original numenor, and Glorfindel.

    I actually really like the idea of a ponytail on Mauhur, it’s very thematic considering most Uruk-Hai have long hair and Lurtz having a ponytail too but I agree, looks a bit goofy! I haven’t done it yet but I’m thinking some extra volume on the ponytail with green stuff and it would look better because I actually really like his stance.

  • @jonscott1

    My favourites are mostly old Perry brothers ones like the mounted ringwraiths (and the foot ones for that matter). I think the Minas Tirith warriors have held up really well - decent variety and look realistic. Metal wargs are awesome, and as much as the kit has major issues (gaps etc.) I love the Mumakil when its all put together and painted up.
    For bad ones I hate the Theodred sculpts... his face on the foot version looks like he got stomped by a Mumakil. Plastic fellowship sculpts are almost universally awful, as is the plastic cave troll. I think the Minas Tirith warriors have held up really well - decent variety and look realistic.

    • @giovannigalassi3436
      @giovannigalassi3436 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      In their defence, plastic technology was far away from what we have today back in 2004. It would have been nearly impossible to get the same results back then, when metal sculpts were far ahead and plastic ones were still trying to catch up. Also, many early sculpts were rejected because of wrong proportions and mould problems (you can clearly see the "original" sculpts for three kits from that period, namely Last Alliance Elves, Riders of Rohan and Minas Tirith warriors, in both box arts and rulebook pictures).

    Couldn’t agree more about the wargs. I painted up 24 of them for our local groups battle companies. I never want to see them again. I would also add me potato head plastic morannon orc to the list to counterbalance the awesome banner bearer. The worst for me has to definitely be the Black Numenorians. They just look so cartoonish and ugly; they don't look like they belong in the Jacksonverse at all. They look more like they would be home in the Warhammer fantasy universe, with their large heads, wide swords, and overall stumpy look. They would look bland there, but at least would work better than they do in Middle Earth.

    • @ConquestCreations
      @ConquestCreations  7 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      This is a valid one, them and the original swan knights were sculpted by the same sculptor who definitely missed the aesthetic of the game

  • @ARVETDEG
    @ARVETDEG 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

    I wish they re-released the old Three Hunters minis. They're awesome. Especially the Gimli one. And Gimli being my favorite character, I wish we had more helmetless Gimlis. Or to be more exact... Playable helmetless Gimlis, as you can't use the Gimli on dead Uruk-Hai mini to play. I mean, you can, but you know what I mean haha
    Also... I don't like much the newer sculpts. Not because they're horrible, but I think a lot of modern minis are not done with the considerations of their size and its use, as a lot of modern minis are thought first and foremost as if they were made solely for display, thus why they try to add a lot of dynamism to them, making them look stiff, (sometimes) weird-looking, off, and as if they were defying gravity. So they add lots and lots of unnecessary details, thinking they need to be very detailed, which I think it doesn't fit in miniatures.
    Because you won't ever be looking at minis from 1 cm away all the time and it's for wargaming, not for display as if it were a medium to big display collectible.
    That's why I didn't like much the Iron Hills, as they don't look like dwarves, but regular humans but as if they were of a shorter miniature scale.
    That's why I prefer the older miniatures as they have the right amount of detail, plus they're considered for wargaming and it's scale, and they look good and natural.

    I mightily disagree that those orcs are "best," and even that they might be decent sculpts. I think they look like 1980s cast-offs. It's a matter of taste, of course. I think most of the Rohan line deserves to be considered "best." The Mirkwood heavy infantry are amazing sculpts. And where I agree with you most is the FW Thranduil. Wow is that amazing.

    I just can't understand why so many people don't like plastic models in general and prefer the metal ones... In my opinion plastic is far better than any other material. Every plastic mini I bought was really well made and the pieces were always matching each other perfectly whereas the metal ones have some flaws waaay to often. Not to mention that the plastics are much easier to paint (the paint comes of the metal off just like in case of your Morgul Knights). And the plastic ones are much cheaper... ;)
    Can anyone explain to me why to bother with metal minis? I don't really see any advantages :D
    (Edit: I started collecting in 2011, so the plastics were already out... Maybe this is the case? Maybe someone is simply used to the metal ones? You know, from the times, when there were no plastics yet...)

    • @ConquestCreations
      @ConquestCreations  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      The main reason that people prefer metals is the amount of detail that you get. Metal miniatures are far more detailed than even the brand new plastic kits. When I am spending hours and hours painting a miniature the detail is my primary concern.
      Another reason a lot of people like metals is simply how they feel. The extra weight makes them feel more valuable. Obviously this is a bit silly but I really like it.

      The newer plastic models (like the new Witch King for example) are beautiful. Back when the three movies first came out though, plastic technology was far inferior to metal in producing detailed miniatures (look at the old plastic Rangers box set. Terrible miniatures!)

    their legs arent even ginormous nor too long man xD legs being longer than torso and head is not something abnormal, I would argue their legs are too short, their torsos too small, their heads too big and their horses tiny, all in all the proportions are totally off. Same with metal elrond, his legs end at the knees. I also call him elrond shortlegs and gave him a leg operation to make them longer. JUST LOOK AT THEM. Now they are fine and the model actually looks like an elven lord not like a darf-orc crossing. 25 year old models are ofcourse ugly compared to the hobbit models.

  • @giovannigalassi3436
    @giovannigalassi3436 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    It's your list and I'm ok with that...
    But where are Sauron, the Mumak and the Balrog? Models that are still perfect, even if they are almost 20 years old now. I think they'd at least deserve a mention here.
    Also, Thror is not as perfect as it seems and not just because it's finecast (hate that material, be damned the day GW went for it), but even proportions don't fit with the rest of the range. And speaking of fitting, Aragorn from the Three Hunters (metal) is probably the least inspired version of the guy, Helm's deep and Weathertop sculpts being far superior by pose, sculpt and detail. About Helm's deep related stuff, how could you not even mention any of the models from Heroes of Helm's deep boxed set? Sculpted by the one and only Brian Nelson, probably the best couple hands GW has ever had in its sculpting department, they are true to their actor counterparts and are almost perfection in detail and pose. Metal Haldir Elves are also a masterpiece, even if they're adjustments of just a couple poses copy-pasted.
    And about worst models, how could you skip on stuff like the plastic Galadhrim (probably the biggest delusion in my entire modellistic life), the Mirkwood armoured Elves sets (finecast, ugly sculpts, concept really thrown away), and basically everything that was thrown out just for the sake of it between 2010 and 2013?
    Sorry to be so harsh in my complaint, I know it's about personal tastes and all, but when I get into this kind of video it happens frequently that I feel disappointed and totally disagree with the speaker. Maybe it's because I've an affection to some models (like the one I mentioned before) or because I tend to judge a model harshly if it seems sculpted without care and inspiration, like some newer Orc sculpts where you get fur and metal plates to cover a lack of better ideas...

    • @ConquestCreations
      @ConquestCreations  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I totally agree with you on the Mumak, Sauron, and the Balrog. Those models are spot on. After them its down to personal preference. I agree that Thror may be slightly out of scale with the rest of the line as he is a bit more realistically proportioned rather than heroically but I love the amount of detail in him. Yes finecast sucks but that doesn't impact the final appearance of the model. The defenders of Helms Deep is great. I use that aragorn model in my fellowship. I am surprised that you think that the plastic galladrim are that bad. They seem on par with most of the plastics and rate a lot higher than a lot of the other plastics like corsairs, woodelves, and mordor orcs.
