I did a similar route through East Hokkaido back in May, was absolutely spectacular. Would recommend to anyone looking for something off the beaten path.
Absolutely! East Hokkaido is such a hidden gem! I did a little exploring there a couple of years ago and was blown away by the untouched beauty. The nature and wildlife are something special, for sure. It’s nice to see others appreciating those off-the-beaten-path spots. Definitely makes me want to pack my bags and head back there soon! 🌿🐻
Thank you John and Peter for sharing this brilliant adventure, I absolutely loved this 2 part series. There is so much beauty in this part of the world that I one day hope to see for myself in person. I remember your winter livestream from Lake Akan 3 years ago and it was great to see it in a different season. There are so many highlights that you packed into this video but a particular one for me was seeing your return meeting with Melon Kuma, looks like you have a friend for life in him John. Excellent work gentleman, excellent. Best wishes to you both and your families.
Always a treat to see this duo. I am going to Hokkaido next year, so can't wait to check out some of the spots covered in this series. Love the video John and PvG!
Thank you John and Peter for taking us along on your adventure! I can't wait for the next video! And also, I think that this is not the last that we have seen of melonkuma! Melon! Melon! Melon! 🍈🍈🍈
Love part 2 also very interesting vid guys!!!! Was excited to see what was next as the vid went on!! Great foods great views DRONE shots!!!! 👌🏻 The Shiretoko national park bathe looked so relaxing!!!! Great outdoors!!! 👍🏻 Top vid guys!! Shinzo Abe! 🙏🏼
Wow. What an adventurous road trip! It's making me want to go to Japan even more. I never thought you could rent an RV! It's one of my bucket lists and hopefully, I could do it someday. Thank you for sharing these beautiful sceneries. God bless!
Definitely give it a go! Easy driving in Hokkaido with the wide open roads. Japan CRC is a pretty good company to rent from - easy in, easy out. Let me know how it goes when you do it someday :)
The amount of effort just to get a simple overhead shot by a drone, or even the beginning shot of leaving the starting point (and you need to retrieve the camera), wow it's incredible. Japan is definitely on my bucket list, I really want to go there for the views, the food, the travel experience by train as well. It's soo cozy and wonderful watching this.
Beautiful- you even got the high-five freeze frame at the end like the credits of an 80's movie. Definitely worth the wait for the re-upload. Thanks again, John.
Hey John and Peter, just watch both parts to your trip to Hokkaido. You guys have so much fun and a really fantastic time and adventures together, just wanted to say that my family and I just greatly appreciate all that you do with your travels and all the hard work you put into giving us and taking us to places in Japan that we mostly likely won’t get to! Thank you very much.
It was so good, flavored perfectly - tender. So cheap in Nemuro from a convenient store! Taie-san’s store is pretty special, I’ll be back to see his family again too. Thanks Gil!
@@onlyinjapan When we visited the fish market in Hakodate our host pointed out the tub of Hanasaki Crab commenting that it was his favorite. Coming from Alaska I didn't think anything could best fresh Alaska King Crab. Definitely on my list of foods I want to try. Will be in Tokyo next month. Curious if the fish market there offers it and if it is in season in August.
Hi John. I was really looking forward to this video especially after seeing this on livestream. It was awesome to watch you and Peter on this adventure. Perfectly done my friend.
Great work from everyone involved. You guys are a great team. I think you've found a good way to produce feature length Only in Japan content. Thank you.
Great video , it’s funny I was thinking about why no one goes to Hokkaido a few days ago, and then these videos pop up on my feed. I think people stay on the golden route because it’s easier to manage as being foreigners in Japan and not knowing the language. Not to mention lots of places require car to get to, and we foreigners can’t exactly read Japanese road signs off the plane. Haha.
I understand why the Golden Route is so popular, there’s a lot of culture and sights and as humans, we want to share and imitate. But I do hope people venture off the trail at least once or in their second visit. Places like Hokkaido are so worth it, esp in summer when Kyoto is like a sauna, hot and humid. It’s amazing up north!
Excellent John & Peter. Thank you for showing us a "...road less travelled" experience of Japan. In some ways, a more appealing destination than the more dense & crowded Japanese tourist locations.
Honestly was this just shot by you John? Cause if so, youre getting REALLY good with some of those drone shots. Tbh the cinematography all the way around just keeps improving with you and thats saying something since you have arguably the best produced indie channel on YT. I probably will never get to travel this area of the world so thank you bringing us all along on thjs adventure!
We had backing for a lot of people and we both wanted to do a good job for them. Filming sometimes takes the fun out of traveling - but we balanced it well. Can’t forget it’s about having fun, exploring and experiencing new things, the Hokkaido way! I really appreciate the kind comment and will always strive to keep videos super entertaining and informative.
Glad I caught this video in time for my trip to Hokkaido this coming August! I will be sure to pack a jacket now that I've seen what Hokkaido can throw at you - even in midsummer while the rest of Japan swelters in relentless heat and humidity!
It just sound so natural when Peter narrates. I've been listening to John for years so I've been accustomed to him, but it didn't even occur to me Peter is also doing half of the narration until I'm a quarter into the video.
Peter is WAY better than me but over the last 10 years, I’ve gotten better and more comfortable with it, can play with inflection and tone more to tell the story. Makes it more fun, Peter naturally does that from experience and it really shows!
39:26 - Peter's dog-tag give me feeling that it was not only recreational trip, but reconnaissance mission for finding proper place for secret military base. :)
@@PetervonGommJAPAN yeah, their war stories definitely deserves wider sharing. Because when people starts to forget the stories, price and pain of war, new big war comes (we in Ukraine know it since 2014 and especially since February 24, 2022).

Hi John, nice to see you guys are travelling together, really enjoyed. When you mentioned momo, that took back me to Nepal and my old memory. This video you did it really well. At the beginning telling your destinations. Different cameras and with the drone above the sky seeing the trailer. Driving and the view around the car and inside the car, is it the 360° camera? I liked it👍
