Mr. Wee was one of the last breed of entrepreneurs who are independent of any governments and other businesses agendas.
He was able to see through schemes and rise above the situation to realise his own way on matters .
A rare man amongst the many entrepreneurship who cannot see past other people's agendas.
    Yes. You made a difference.
You told a story worth studying.
    Thank you.

Actually the circumstances of his acquisition of banks were more to do with luck than business acumen. Most people do not know the inside story. The takeover of Chung Khiaw Bank was LKY's directive because control of the bank was indirectly put into the hands of a foreign company Slater-Walker when it had bought over Haw Par Brothers (which was the bank's holding company) from Aw Cheng Chye (the Aw family of Tiger Balm fame). As for Lee Wah Bank the Eu family (of Eu Yen San fame) had done a share swop with UOB but it did not have full control of the bank because minority shareholders held back for some time before finally caving in. UOB's acquisition of Industrial Commercial Bank was a play of luck, as the representative of the controlling faction of ICB through its holding company had ran out of time and option to comply with MAS directive to sell the bank. This takeover raked in a vast amount of unrealised value for UOB (a windfall) in the share value of ICB . The share swop was done at 3 UOB shares for 5 ICB shares (which at that time had a lot of assets whose value was far above their book value and if an asset revaluation exercise had been done the swop ratio would have been more in favour of ICB). The merger of Overseas Union Bank was in line with government policy to have consolidation of our local banks for better control in building up a nascent financial centre. It was a friendly takeover-merger as OUB's Lien Ying Chow and Wee were good friends but "rivals" in banking. Basically, this was the backdrop to how UOB came to takeover/merge with4 other local banks and become one of the largest banks in the region.

Famous line quoted by Wee Cho Yaw, probably a legacy he is leaving behind - " Anything you say I will do" (replying to Lee Kuan Yew during the Slater-Walker/Chung Khiaw Bank saga when UOB was the only bank to commit regaining back local control of Chung Khiaw Bank from Slater-Walker through holding company Haw Par Brothers) in 1972. R.I.P. Mr wee.

To know Him, to love Him and make Him know is the most paramount in this short span of life. To live a life without knowing Him will be a life in vain. While still alive, this is the only chance. Men only ponder the meaning of life when they are near death or in death bed. Its too stress. Seek Him when life is peaceful, only He is most faithful and will see us through. Never treat Him as spare tyre. But be thankful in all the blessings receive. Love is greatest act.

I dunno this man, but from what I can tell, for someone to have built a very successful bank, he must have some very sound principles and fundamentals in him. Otherwise his ventures would have collapsed long ago. Along with fate and destiny, he worked hard to succeed. And along with him, a group of aspiring people.
There are those who gave negative comments. I dunno why anyone would want to do that, unless they are jealous of his success.

What you said is true, only those with firm sound principles and fundamentals will succeed, break or even bend those and it’s guaranteed FAILURE! Humility is also important. Without humility, it is also a sure way to FAILURE!
