On Day 2 of Singletrack 6, we're racing at Fernie Alpine Resort, testing our skills on steep, rooty descents and our climbing legs with 4000ft/1200m of steep climbing. This might be the shortest day of the race mileage wise, but don't be fooled.

Kinda sad not getting *booped* in the face by Syd's ponytail. It still amazes me how well you both ride trails blind. Some drones have a chase feature IIRC, that would be a very interesting POV occasionally.
Drone footage is fantastic!
When in doubt, leave the suspension open. On modern bikes, especially XC bikes, the efficiency loss when pedalling seated is tiny enough to be imperceptible. When you're grinding up a long fire road or really standing up and mashing the pedals in a sprint is when locking it out starts to pay off.
These days when I need some motivation I say to myself "c'mon Macky, get it in gear!"
Then I think to myself, "who are you kidding, you're no Macky" 🥺
Just don't think the second part and GO FOR IT! 💪
I prefer the swaying of Syd’s ponytail to looking at bottle caps 🥰. What’s with the dude just pulling back into the trail without looking and almost tangling with Syd? 🤬. I’m sure Macky had to resist the temptation to do that skinny during the race 🤪

Dylan Johnson has a video from last year about the science of keeping your rear suspension open while climbing. After watching I don’t bother closing it on climbs anymore.

NICA? Forgive me but I’m from the Pleistocene of mountain bike racing during the 90s when there were no college or high school race teams. In Alaska we didn’t even have sponsorships; although we did have really strong, national class riders riding what would now be considered Cat 1-2. Is NICA a collegiate thing? I think it’s cool that mountain biking has really become more widespread and I’m guessing that is something to do with college racing.
@keirfarnum6811 highschool racing actually (and even middle school in some states). Such a cool program and something I was had been around when I was in highschool!

We turn the cameras on and off throughout the race so that we can get the whole thing on one battery.

I'm sorry, Syd and Macky. My Patreon subscription failed. I had a crash on my bike that gave me a hairline wrist fracture and kept me from working these past 2 months.

Having done this event in 2017, watching you guys tackle those endless brutal climbs and techy descents brings back soo many memories. Thanks for sharing your videos
nice job guys..you are pulling through all the down time in the past and setbacks in the past and i think making yourselves proud. Coming in #1 is good. BUT making progress and growing and learning is even better..congrats!

The edit of Macky casually reviewing his race interspresed with Syd going full bore on a climb is greatness. Have you guys ever thought about a graphic overlay of heartrate (or power and/or speed)? That'd be interesting to see in relation to where you are in the course.

Hey guys thank you for sharing your experience with us. Your videos motivate me to push my limits and while I'm not racing XC like you I am improving my times and extending my range. Goal is complete a 45 miler with 5400' of climbing next spring or early summer. I can do about 40% of it now but I am improving.

Why would that gal do that and then drop all the way back to the second wave of starts? Is that frowned upon?
There was only one start wave (I realize the editing is confusing here). Assuming you're talking about Emily leading out the whole race, the girl in front of me (Syd) later was her teammate in the same kit, so while she definitely wasn't able to beat the top guys, she was still up there.
I am glad I am not the only one that holds a bottle in his mouth while switching full bottle to empty in the cages.

That was my thought. I didn't ride Verboten when I was there, but did ride Aggravated Assault, Playground, Will Power and Fat Larrys and they were all crazy steep
I am always impressed with your riding. There are some sections that I would hesitate to do without sessioning on my 150mm AM bike and you just hammer down on your XC sleds.
