How an Undersized Guard Can Carry a Defense

  • Immanuel Quickley has proven himself an integral part of the New York Knicks, breaking out as a 6MOY candidate for his electric offense off the bench. But what if I told you he was also one of the best guard defenders in the entire NBA?
    Immanuel Quickley's defense is some of the best in the NBA, and he's helped the Knicks elevate to one of the best teams in the NBA since the All Star break. When the Knicks can't have Julius Randle or Jalen Brunson on the floor, they've been looking to Quickley to help anchor both their offense and defense. He hasn't disappointed them.
    With a full buy-in of the defensive system crafted by Tom Thibodeau, they've been nearly unstoppable.

    Mitch Robinson is their best defensive player but they truly do not pass him the ball. Nobody has it worse in the entire NBA, hauls down 10 boards a game, and hits 71% of his shots but he only puts up 5 shots a game cuz Brunson can’t see him under the goal, all he can see is that house of bricks him and Randle build most nites

    Any player who comes into the league with a Nak for defense and try to Excell at that end, have a spot in the nba. They just have to have one other thing. Weird for a player like Marcus Smart. Where he is a great defender partially due to his size. But I compare Quickley to him the thing about quickley is he is better on offense and probably not as good on defense as he can't guard 1-4 or 1-3. Quickley is going to have a long career because of his defense. As a pistons fan I have to bring up Killian Hayes when defensive guards are brought up. Killian doesn't have the shooting yet. Maybe he never will but he has a role in the nba for 10 years because he can defend well above average and he can playmake. Maybe the shooting comes along for Killian and the playmaking comes for quickley and they become starting level point guards but both are great guards for a second unit. Damn I ranted. Mb

  • @julianwilson5607
    @julianwilson5607 ปีที่แล้ว

    I think he's definitely is an impact player defensively. When you watch these clips you can see how well he closes out on the perimeter defensively and he does a good job keeping his man from getting by him when he's running towards them as a help defender, and getting a hand up. The knicks defense gives up alot of 3 point attempts. They also are a top defense at keeping their opponents shooting a low 3 point percentage. Their defense as a team is very solid. My biggest concern with them is who will get minutes?? Also what combinations of those players. If you have Robinson out there, he's not scoring or helping create space on offense. He's a high screen roll player only.He's an awful foul shooter. The Knicks offense is the big problem. Them getting to the foul line has helped them win along with their defense. Their inconsistent 3 point shooting is the problem. Their bench don't shoot well either. Randle will have to play the 5 on defense and go small to win cause their bigs are liabilities on offense nor do the bigs pass well from the elbow. The gotta hope their defense can keep them in games to make close games in late 4tg quarter and win.

    Great vid but just one little detail I disagree with and that’s his motor. I think in the double OT game against Boston he proved that his motor was elite. He was skipping on the court while everyone else was taking deep breaths. I’m guessing he doesn’t start because him and Brunson are both undersized. Besides that you’ve made a great video, guards need to start learning help defense too.

      "It makes a lot of sense why he is there sixth man because they already ask him to do so much on the defensive end. He makes a lot of contributions on the offensive end as well, so if he were playing a full 36 minutes or full starter minutes he would probably be exhausted simply because they're already asking him to do so much so I think the sixth man role is perfect for him"
      I hope I didn't come off like a hater or anything like that, I get what your saying. How IQ does so much so his sixth man role gets the best out of his role because too many minutes will potentially exponentially decrease his value since he has to do so much.
      I just personally believe off the two 50 point games I've seen this year plus the 10 or so Knicks games I've watched that he can keep up similar production at a starter level and the real reason he isn't starting is related to something else (whatever that reason may be).
      Does that make sense?
