    I have a paper shredder and a big bin I put it all in for a few days and let it soak before I blend. Much smoother paper:)

    I'm going to do this and make my own jewelry cards for my Etsy shop.
    If you put extra towels on top with a heavy object, they will dry flatter.
    It's been awhile since I've made seed paper- thanks for sharing!

    I have so much paper from recently graduating from college, and I wanted a good way to reuse it all without just tossing it and feeling super guilty about it. I really like this tutorial. I will say though that I don’t think it’s a great idea to get a splatter screen just to use the netting and throw the rest away. If the purpose of recycling old paper into new paper and adding seeds is to be environmentally conscious, then I think that it doesn’t make much sense to use such a destructive/ wasteful method for making the mold and deckle. Anything that water can pass through would work, so most likely you’d be able to find something already lying around the house that you could use. A really thin piece of fabric or mesh would work. I’ve even seen methods where people use mesh or fabric in an embroidery hoop, that way you could even take an old cotton T-shirt and use it for your mold and deckle without even ruining it or cutting it and just take it out of the hoop when you’re done. Idk, knowing that that metal frame and plastic handle got thrown out when it was really unnecessary just doesn’t sit right with me.

    • @CardensGardens
      @CardensGardens  3 ปีที่แล้ว +24

      Oh my gosh honestly I didn’t even think about it, but you’re soooo right!! I used to have an old window screen and I tore through the garage trying to find it, and I think someone must have gotten rid of it. I didn’t know you could do use a piece of cloth to do the same thing though. Awesome idea! Seriously thank you for leaving the feedback and the ideas on how to make this project even more sustainable. 🙏🙏

    You could try making natural ink in combination with this, that way you can write fancy letters only using stuff that you made.
    Edit: Also, for those with depression like me, you can write out your angry thoughts on the paper you rip up! That way you can turn your anger into something beautiful and vent at the same time!

    • @CardensGardens
      @CardensGardens  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Oh my gosh, do you have a recipe for natural ink? I had got a cardens gardens stamp made but haven’t used it yet bc I wanted to use organic ink. Great suggestion. Also, thanks for adding the edit! I never thought about ripping up angry thoughts, but it sounds very cathartic! I started writing things I was grateful for, and thought it might be fun to plant those one of these days.

    I have a dream of living in the countryside, preferably on a non-functioning old farm, having a garden to grow veggies and stuff. I suppose cottagecore meets dark academia would be by preferred aesthetic, as I want to be a professor too. Anyway, the dream might come true as a friend of mine and I realized that we share said dream life, and her family even has an old farm of which she wanted to move into when her grandpa moves to a retirement home aka in maybe a year or so.
    So SHE proposed the idea of us sharing that farm, having a vegetable garden, and even a couple hens and sheep. She is experienced in livestock as her family has worked on a family friend's farm during the summer every year since she was little. I, on the other hand, have barely touched the flowers my mom had in our garden, let alone planted or cared for any green thing. That doesn't stop the dream, though!
    Anyway, if my friend and I move in together (it's quite the big house with two living rooms, so the "they were roommates" meme might become more of a "they were housemates"), I want to have a side hustle while studying at the uni close by. I dream of selling eggs, and I was thinking of making handmade cartons for them (using one of those plastic ones you can get when shopping eggs as a mold) with recycled and/or plant-based carton with seeds in it! So when my local farmer or countryside customers are done with the eggs, they can plant the carton. I would also make a non-seed one for just general composting, as having flowers grow in your compost doesn't sound ideal...
    I also want to sell eco friendly, handmade soap/bathroom products, as well as food items such as jams, jellies, cheese (my friend makes those) etc. And I would also like to try my hand at bookbinding, making journals, notebooks, and the like with (recycled or partially) plant-based paper!
    I would ofc pay rent to my friend's family/help with the bills, so I would need an income of some sort on the side, and with my country's tax system it won't be so bad as long as I'm not that popular. And I'm perfectly happy with doing small batch slow made wares for my customers, especially because my main job would be studying and/or teaching for the foreseeable future.

    Wow! This looks like so much fun I think I’m going to have to try it. Now the question is did you try planting any of these to see if they grow. The company that I saw that was making cards with these inserted as a little gift told you to put them in a little Ziploc bag after you soak them and tape them to a sunny window to create a greenhouse effect until they start growing roots and then you plant them. I’d be curious to know if that would work with these. Thanks for sharing this fun project!

    Wow, I love this! I was considering ordering some online for some care packages that I'm working on, but the price is outrageous. Did you by chance try planting your finished paper to see if your seeds sprouted?

    • @CardensGardens
      @CardensGardens  3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      So I haven’t planted them yet Because I wanted to find a meaningful use for them. Over the past few weeks I’ve been writing down things that I’m grateful for on little pieces of them and I plan to plant them in a few weeks. I also saw a video on where you can make “seed bombs” which are also made out of recycled paper, but in a little small ball instead for planting. I think that may be my paper might’ve had too many seeds, but I’m not sure.

      I wrote on mine with a ballpoint pen, and it worked but it’s a little bumpy. I wouldn’t press super hard or it will poke through.
