Bill Gates Thinks These Toilets Could Change The World

  • The first flush toilet was first invented in 1596, but it didn’t become widespread until much later in the 19th century. Before the invention of that toilet, the majority of us just returned our discharge to the earth by digging a hole or constructing a simple privy.
    Today having a flush toilet or a toilet of any sort is still a luxury that the modern world takes for granted. But billionaire philanthropist and co-founder of Microsoft Bill Gates wants to change all that and make widespread sanitation possible for the rest of the world. Here's why Bill Gates thinks these toilets could change the world.

      Grunge water quality.
      Mains drainage.
      Penalties for pouring, otherwise solid, fats into the drains. Have you seen the fat monsters in drains?
      Free feminine hygiene products for every woman, everywhere. Not like women asked their wombs to expel its lining every four weeks! Shouldn’t be a thing women can’t afford. Face it, if men lost a part of them, in a bloody mess every month, the hygiene products would be free!

      Well the environmental savings it does it’s countered by making more moving parts that can break, & since there’s gas involved it can go boom. Cleaning out once a week sounds bad, most households/toilets get cleaned maybe once or twice every few weeks/months.
      The best environmental savings is something that is simple to create, maintain, & fix.
      There’s only 5-6 moving parts in an average toilet, handle, dump flapper, float, water inlet valve. That’s it, now we want a scraper, gears, worm gear, incinerator chamber, & a few others.

  • @Sashazur
    @Sashazur 5 ปีที่แล้ว +64

    I feel for the poor sap who'll have to take apart that fancy toilet every time one of the many mechanical parts inside breaks down. I'm also skeptical that the scraper will actually keep the bowl clean.

      @michaelbenoit248 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah, this sounds like a terrible idea, the old fashioned toilet has been used for decades, & now we’re having issues? Just take a porta potty, make a dump valve to empty into a canister that can then be dumped into a barrel for incineration, or just burry it.

    • @TimHayward

      I suspect most people don't want the extra steps involved with owning a composting toilet. Plus I am fairly certain that even with a composting toilet, the human waste needs to age somewhere for no less than a year and as much as two years before it is truly safe to use.

    • @lordgarion514
      @lordgarion514 5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@fishinnutt
      Actually, it can be a couple of months or so. But you have to monitor the temperature to make sure it gets high enough. If it doesn't or you don't check, then a year is recommended, and up to two in colder areas. But indoors with climate control or in warm environments the shorter time is generally fine because the temperature in compost can get plenty high enough to kill off the baddies.
      So in most of the world that truly needs them no long term composting is going to be needed.

    One problem with the toilet featured in this video is that it has too many moving parts. The more complicated a mechanism, the more likely a breakdown, and if it's in the third world, finding parts and trained repair personnel will be difficult. Really, a pit toilet is a better solution.

      hmmm you really think they didn't think of pit toilets? If it were that simple there wouldn't be a toilet problem. And if you actually listened to the mechanism it really isn't that complicated. They probably tested it to see how long it would last. It's not like they're going to put a toilet in a place that can't deal with it anyway.

    There are far more affordable and simpler ways of relieve. Pit toilents with two separate osmotic tanks can separat liquid from solid and are actually being used in some modern rural areas in Germany. The two tanks get emptied regularly and transported away to a burning facility. Human waste is not really useful for agriculture (antibiotics etc...) . Therefor burning the solid part and filtering the liquid is of course the best the can do in the third world, not however with such a complicated device. With the current state of education people will throw all kinds stuff in there that will break the toilet. I mean, people already do that in the 1st world. So , my point is, its not progressive, its a way to make money, without even providing jobs. Burning the wast in a plant and not individualy eith every local toilet is a lot more efficient, too.

    There has been an electric toilet that incinerates waste on the market for years called the Incinolet. This isn't new technology. It also has problems such as having to but expensive filters to continually dispose of and replace. It is also very expensive. The best toilet idea I have ever come across was the vermicomposting toilet which is sanitary, cheap, uses a regular flushing toilet and doesn't require the user to handle his feces.

    I grew up in a poor eastern European communist country, without modern water toilets, yet nobody died of diarrhea. In cities they had modern sewage, but at the country side, every family had outside toilets (latrine pits), simple, dry, without water. They smelled a little, but it was nothing horrible. It was no source of diseases and the waste almost never ended in rivers. We had clean rivers, clean water and clean villages. Once a year, we simply threw the human waste from the pit, together with cow waste from the farm, on the fields, as a fertilizer, where we grew our crops (usually corn). This is not possible in big cities, but in villages is totally possible without any high tech. People in those countries need to start being more civilized. Of course, in more densely populated areas, it is way more difficult, but in villages, it is totally possible to have clean water, clean environment, even without high tech toilets...just a little common sense.

    The toilet technology is not the main problem here. Rather it is the ability to manufacture it and THEN import it into the countries that need them. In the case of Kenya by the time the customer pays for this new toilet it will be at least three times the retail price of buying it in the UK even if it is manufactured in China. If the product is manufactured in Kenya the corruption there will either close down the factory or cost the customer the same amount of money. The people who live in the slum areas some who I know of personally in Kisumu and Nairobi, are lucky to earn even USD 5 per day!
