    The most shocking thing about this one is that Peter Hunt thinks a tarantula is a scorpion (for some reason).

      I think it’s awesome. My teachers always used to ask if I’d always have a calculator in my pocket and made me learn long-division. The calc application is still faster and Mavis Beacon (taught) me the numpad.
      Those, ‘idiots’ never had an Encyclopedia or constant overflowing information on a pertinent/relevent topic. (that we seach for)
      Stupid fools they were.
      The world is in flux always. You can be the fastest at an application and be conpletely lost when the utility is gone.
      Edit: Anything in parenthisis

    I love what Peter Hunt says at the end about the television generation's watching habits. Grandma in the kitchen making tea and somebody else is talking. Now, though, people are on their phones while watching movies. In my Bond marathon for the month of November, I had to ask my wife and kids to just sit and watch the movies. As Hunt says, audiences have lost the appreciation of identifying with the characters on the screen. I'm trying to recapture that for my kids. Going to the theater often helps too, but Hollywood ain't making movies like they use to.

      Hey Ryan good to hear from you. Thanks for the comment. I have memories of watching the "007 days of Christmas" back when tv was still a thing, was always a treat to look forward to every year.
      Who knows if Hollywood will ever turn over a new leaf or if there is something new and maybe better coming?

    Again, there’s nothing shocking to these priceless treasures for us Bond researchers-except for when they’re too honest in not toeing the company line.
    They were merely recorded in the very early days of criterion inventing the commentary process. At the time when living legends were still around they would use some politically incorrect language here and there which wouldn’t be done nowadays. The entire reason these editions were pulled was that Cubby Broccoli didn’t like the idea of how they were being done. Except criterion had already made and produced them to send out for release in their usual style. So EON’s solution was insisting they be pulled, which meant that only the copies that have been sold were in circulation and everybody else just had to get the CLV standard edition without supplements. Criterion wanted to offer the commentaries to fans and tried to do a separate mail order cassette tape version, but EON said no.
    These are not the only reasons why the laser discs are so vital. The transfer on Dr. No is the most accurate to original release prints on home video and features the best presentation of the original mono mix found anywhere except for the end credits. Both it and Goldfinger feature isolated music and effects tracks which remain the only source for the complete soundtrack of both films. They are stuck as these unfortunately compromised low quality composite tracks on the analog back up.

    • @ZevStellar
      @ZevStellar  11 วันที่ผ่านมา +3

      Hey this is a great comment, your note about having the separate sound score track separated from the dialog is a very important point and yes it is vital that these are preserved.

    Sean Connery was patient huh? Maybe so, but i recall thr directors commentary of "The Rock" where Jeremy B. Said that "you could not bullshit Sean!". That was in response to estimating how much time it took to shoot a scene. Jeremy assured him in a scene that it would not take too long... But Sean had considerable experience with making movies. Director's Commentaries are a wonderful innovation. So much honesty!

    Fun Fact:
    Peter Burton, Desmond Llewelyn,
    Geoffrey Bayldon & Alec McCowan;
    the four men who played "Q" in
    the Bond films previously appeared
    in the 1958 Titanic film: *"A Night to Remember".*
    Peter Burton played a 1st Class Steward
    Desmond Llewelyn played a 3rd Class Steward on the other side of a gate preventing passengers from entering 1st Class
    Geoffrey Bayldon ("Q" in 1967's *"Casino Royale")* played Cyril Evans, the Wireless Operator of SS Californian
    Alec McCowan ("Algernon/Q" in 1983's *"Never Say Never Again")* played Harold Cottam, the Wireless Operator of RMS Carpathia

    Terrance Young was bringing Connery up to speed about the finer things in life, molding him into the classy secret agent that he became in all of the Bond films. However, at 8:08 but not shown in this clip, as Bond enters Strangways radio room, you can see him fastening the bottom button on his "very elegant grey flannel" suit. Its a minor thing but a major faux pas for a man who was meant to be sartorially sophisticated.

    No Oddjob/Only Oddjob. Also, I thought the commentary from the last one was shocking as it applies to DVD commentary. It’s all very tame and sanitized even when they first started coming out, and have only gotten worse. They come off as fun, unplanned moments of candor after not seeing the film for a long time. guns were a tremendous problem on the early bonds . the walther ppk or more properly the pp as thats used more often simply refused to cycle blanks .this made it useless if bond had to fire several shots.it was swapped for a lookalike fn browning when he kills dent .the original cut had him shoot the helpless man several times but i believe was cut either for tv or censorship .in any event they found a pistol that didnt jam.they then discovered the colt 1911as used by the three assassins also would not cycle blanks .no problem as using silencers meant the muffled gun shots could be dubbed in later .bond uses a silencer in the dent scene why didnt we try that then?we never thought of it! in frwl during the gypsy fight bond is seen recycling the slide of his ppk between shots as it kept jamming.the other problem was the bren guns used in strafing the beach where bond is hiding.two were provided .incredibly they managed to insert the magazine into the first backwards as seen in the film.they then couldnt get it out ! again the actual sound of the guns firing was dubbed in later so they didnt have to function.the director then decided not to insert a magazine into the second bren in case it got stuck as well! so they shot the scene with one bren empty no mag and the other with the magazine curved backwards! the magic of the movies!

      @@ZevStellar the .25 beretta was as i discovered at the imperial war museum a weapon issued to a lot of soe and other agents during the war.they used very small caliber pistols.these were however not for offensive operations where larger weapons would be carried . they were intended as a weapon of very last resort easy to hide or dispose of if searched. they could primarily be used to kill yourself if captured.in the movie the ministry of ungentalmanly warfare an agent caught planting explosives uses a .25 colt to kill the germans who discovered him.fleming probably got the idea for the berretta from his days in naval intelligence .nobody intending to use a pistol to kill specifically would use one.as you say fleming never saw combat .

    That note about horrible editing choices that don't matter really doesn't carry over into an age where you can watch these films at home whenever you want. And it's hilarious that he's saying this on a LaserDisk copy. He's literally saying that to the people who are going to go back and look at this over and over again for the first time. I'm not saying it's stupid of him. He was probably perfectly correct in making those editing choices instead of ordering someone to go out to the studio and film the perfectly matching car on a dyno - if he had time to dwell on it I'm sure he'd say that it sounds something you can do "these days."

    actually I was thinking on why Albert Broccoli might have wanted these things 86'd and around that time that these came out he was shopping around and trying to get investors for the next James Bond film around 91, the film that became goldeneye, as that is when Dalton was still attached and the cold war had ended, so he might have figured the negative press would go wrong and cause his film franchise to be permanetly canceled
    hence why he reacted that way and had them canned as a form of damage control,
