This is the perfect example of listening to your audience, figuring out what is working and rinsing and repeating. I now look forward to the bloopers 🙂 Thanks for sharing. Great content
Thank you for the kind words!!
Loving the bloopers. It really shows how hard YT really is.
I love it, especially the last 3 minutes and convincing the cat to stay 😂 I’m 46 and starting my TH-cam channel, thank you for the inspiration Rob 🙌🏼
Good luck to you and your new channel! :-)
i FINALLY posted my first video monday. waited 9 years to do it, and now that i broke the seal its not so scary! none scripted, all just with and idea of what i wanted to talk about and turned the camera on. thats all it takes to start! wish i wasnt so scared for so long. imagine where id be if id been posting all this time. 😩 looking forward to where it takes me!
That's so awesome!! Congratulations!!! Now it's just onward and upward from here! Keep having fun with it and try to learn something new with each new video and the sky is the limit. Good luck with it!! :-)
Thank you! This is how I prefer to make videos so I appreciate the validation. I will carry on.
I took your advice last week and I appreciate your transparency. My first video was over 15 years ago my channel is small with lots of content to offer. I am reinventing it now!
That is awesome! Good luck and have fun!! :-)
Your Bloopers have me laughing in such a good way 😂! I had to stop & let you know--thank you. Laughter is healing. You remind me of how many times I restarted my first video, whichwas in 2017. What I love most about your bloopers is that You Did Not Quit!!!🎊 Such an encouragement for all of us here. Thank you!
Haha that's awesome! I'm glad you liked it :-) Thank you and best of luck to you!! :-)
Yes, I did subscribe ☺️.
I am 60. I have had Myalgic Encephalomyolitis Chronic Fatigue Syndrome MECFS for 7 years now and really cannot work a job anymore......too stressful. But for the last 3 years or so, I have been wanting to start TH-cam.
I am a polymath, so I do have lots to share and say: music ---piano, golf, Bible/theology, cooking, maybe more 🎉.
Plus, I have started many books but need to finish them.
You are a great inspiration 👏😊👏💐👏😊😊😻👏💐.
Thank you and may God Bless you and your family.
Miss Monique 🙂🙏🌷💗
Sounds like you've got lots you can share!! Best of luck to you!! :-)
Have you thought about posting piano tutorials? I've considered doing it
@@sibaroochi Yes. I have figure out how to make videos first!!!
I teach all ages, but I tend to teach beginner and intermediate students.
I don't know when all this will happen, but stay tuned!!!!
Miss Monique 🙂🙏🌷💗
@@RobtheMaritimer Thank you for your help today. I look forward to learning from you. God bless you and your family.
Miss Monique 🙂🌷🙏🕊️
Well done Monique! I have ME too and haven’t been able to work for years. I have just started on YT and aiming to monetise by Christmas - I’m challenging myself and loving it! It’s so wonderful to be able to make a difference, even if you’re stuck in bed a lot of the time. Wishing you all the best!
Love the authenticity and motivation. TH-cam can be so intimidating but you make folks feel inspired!
I agree 100 percent
I love your demeanor and style. This plan is absolutely a necessary adventure. I've been studying to make my first video for about a month and I still don't really know anything that I can put into a fully workable plan. There's just so much to learn. I'm excited to see your upcoming videos and I'll be listening to the live stream next week.
I hope I'm able to help simplify the process for you! One of the reasons it's a great idea to practice talking to the camera and going through the steps to film, edit and upload videos is that the more you do it the more you will learn what your ideal process looks like. Eventually it'll become second nature and you'll continue to get better on camera too. Good luck with it and see you on Tuesday! :-)
Awesome video. You are showing us how to start a TH-cam channel by being yourself, transparent, reel and raw in the making. I can't wait to watch the next video and so on. Thanks for the motivation and the inspiration.
Thank you for the kind words!! I'm glad you're getting value from my videos... more are on the way (next one hopefully tonight... just finishing it up now ;)
Keep it up, Bob! I'm 62, and I started my TH-cam channel a few months ago without knowing exactly what I wanted to do with it. Now, I post office eating ASMR videos for fun while also learning video editing.
Sounds great! Having fun with it while also learning new skills… best of luck to you!!
Hi Rob! I really like this format and these types of videos. I'm 6 minutes in and your advice is great!
Hey Sofia! Thank you for the kind words :-)
I am 32 and i started my channel
I like these types of videos because I feel like I am conversing with the person on video. It's a better way to get to know someone than scripting. Scripted videos are awesome, too, but I do love the one-on-one feeling of these off-the-cuff types.
Thank you :-)
Hi Rob. You really motivated me and today was my fourth day of posting videos I don't have a business, but I'm finding the filming process very helpful for my self-esteem growth. Thanks for teaching.
That's awesome! Congratulations and keep enjoying the process! Business building can always come later... if you want to :-)
Thanks for being real! I appreciate your honesty and voice on this topic! cheers!
I appreciate that! Thanks :-)
Totally relatable. Love your kitty!
I am 40 and probably among the top 10 uncoordinated gamers ever, son is having a great time watching me try to get through the game
That's a great idea for content! ❤❤
I appreciate you showing your outtakes it shows us what we are all experiencing is normal with several tries at the beginning or any part of the video really, that's it doesn't have to be perfect from start to finish. That if you don't like a certain part of a video you can do it again and edit it. I used to get so nervous every time I hit record until I realized I don't have to publish the video if I don't want to. That really relaxed me to the point I talk on video the same way I talk to my friends.
Good job!! Yes, it's totally OK to delete what you don't like... but it's also ok to leave it in, post it, and have a good laugh about it later! Good luck and thanks for commenting :-)
I am so grateful to have found your channel, I was feeling weird to try to understand YT with millenials people, i feel much more align with you. Thanks for this video !
Welcome aboard! I'm happy to help! :-)
cierto / true, lo mismo me pasó a mí. Continúa haciendo vídeos sin teleprompter 👍
I posted my first video Yesterday, Friday 19th & so far it's had 16 views & 8 Subs. Hardly viral but I gotta start somewhere. I don't care about monetization, for me it's just for the pleasure of creating videos & hopefully giving other's pleasure in watching them.
P.S. Your cat is cute the way it's clipped.
That's fantastic! Best of luck to you!
@@RobtheMaritimer Thanks Rob!!!
I had to go watch your first video😂 glad I found your channel.
Welcome! More videos to come ;-)
I love that you show how many starts it takes! That’s my path😂❤
The struggle is real!! :-)
Brilliant! Looking forward to the next video. 👏👏👏
Thank you! 😃
Thank you so much for sharing this information!❤
My pleasure! :-)
Even though I feel like I’m decent at content now, watching your videos gives me very valuable insights.
Like I made a guide, but it would be way better as a video course.
Also, my first video was also 4 years ago, and I laugh so hard at how bad it was now. But I want to keep it there for that reason.
Perfect! I think keeping your first videos on your channel is a great idea… have fun, laugh at yourself, and it’s fun to look back! A cool way to have fun with your audience :-)
Excellent, Rob, thank you.
Got my first two videos up this week and posting the third today. Trying to not over think it and just keep going. Thanks for the great info. Love it!
Awesome!! Keep it up and best of luck!! :-)
Thanks for the video!
You're welcome!
Hi Rob, thank you - this is brilliant advice. P.s. I love your cat 😊
Haha so do I ;-)
Towards ten thousand!!
Thank you Rob. Thanks for this video. I am waiting on your beginners series videos like wrongfully accused on an attorney. Trust me.
Just found your channel and saw you are a fellow Canadian. I made my first video just over 2 years ago at age 64, and it was awful, so I’d be happy if no one sees it. 😂 As I’ve made more videos I’m much more comfortable and able to be myself. It did take some getting used to hearing my own voice! Over time, my wife has joined me, and it does help to have someone to banter with. Still, growth has been slow as we don’t really have a niche, other than being a couple of old fogies. We do have a small following that always watches, but we’re still waiting for that one video that takes off! 😄 ☕️🇨🇦☕️
Hello fellow Canadian!! Sounds like you're proof that practice is all it takes to get good at this! Congrats to you and your channel, and all the best!! :-)
@@RobtheMaritimer thank you!
I'm 45 and I have two youtube channels. I think it's fun to post videos for people to see out there from all around the world. I really appreciated this and the last video. New subscriber and new fan. Thanks for the bloopers too, i felt those !
Thank you, welcome and best of luck to you and your channels!! :-)
@@RobtheMaritimer thanks rob! Fella canadian here.
This is fab Rob - so true. Helping to get people over that first hurdle to get into action it so valuable to people, especially those of us who are older.
Thank you! I'm happy you find it helpful! Good luck :-)
@@RobtheMaritimer thank you! Great channel BTW
Hey Rob, you might want to tell people to not copy peoples titles and video ideas word for word. I’m ok with using it for inspiration but not 100% copy.
But, I guess when people start copying you it’s a compliment.
Good luck
Great video again! I think one of the reasons why the previous week’s video did well was the subject matter, the why and the how. I find that most TH-cam creators are very protective of the “how”. Perhaps they are scared of competition (I have become paranoid on this point).
I, like probably many others, am not comfortable on speaking in public (and I was a salesman, for a large bank, for many years). I would almost go as far as saying “camera shy” as well. But all you have said here is valid and something for me to work on.
Thank you. You have a new subscriber.
There is so much room for more competition so I'd try not to worry about that! As for content creators wanting to safeguard their information... I'm not sure I believe that, it may have more to do with maybe some aren't good at teaching or explaining things clearly. Also, a lot of times content creators will try to put little tricks in their video, like "be sure to watch until the end when I'll give you a bonus tip you won't want to miss!"... stuff like that is an attempt to try to keep viewers watching... because the more of a video people watch, the better that video will do on youtube. So I think if content creators can get better by not being so obvious with trying to trick viewers to sticking around and just creatively make their videos more interesting to watch, that would be a creator I'd be interested in watching more! Thanks for the insights :-)
Peanut has a very interesting tail; reminds me of a Dr. Seuss character/cartoon! Love your videos. You're inspiring me to resume what I started a few years ago.
Haha! Thanks and good luck! :-)
Thank you for this boost of encouragement. New subscriber :) Looking forward to your upcoming How-to videos.

HEY KITTY KITTYY KITTYY.................... IN BG
I love your inspirational videos on how to start a TH-cam channel for people over 40 y/o. Thanks to your videos and motivation, I'm bout to start recording my first video and upload it to TH-cam. Thanks again!
That's awesome! Good luck with it and have fun!! :-)
Great take on this. My suggestion for this series: what's the minimum hardware you need to do something reasonable and upload it? Cell phone, camera?, gopro style video cam? I've run up against this as a point of procrastination. My videos look awful so I'm unwilling to put them online especially compared top all the variety of expert looking videos I see in my feed.
Try to resist comparing your videos to other videos you see on youtube, to a point... there really is no need to have the best picture, sound, etc... your message/content is much more important! That said, you can make videos look quite good even with a cheap camera - if you focus on lighting! Lighting is SO HUGE when it comes to getting good videos. A video with good lighting with a cheap old camera will probably look better than video on a $3,000 camera but used poor lighting. Food for thought! Good luck with it :-)
YES!
So true!
Very helpful sir ❤
the biggest block I have with TH-cam is copycats.. it's well known TH-camrs search for videos doing well and simply copy what you are doing. So it's a bit like swimming against the current. There are many other blocks such as privacy concerns and the unknown variables of people at TH-cam cherry picking favorite channels (no proof, just a hunch). TH-cam roadblocks topic might be a good video idea as I'm sure others have em too
Thank you. I started last week making videos of my self appearing on screen for tiktok … It was not easy, and I can relate myself with your last part of the video doing it many times until I feel I was ready to talk ahah
Now I want to do it on TH-cam!
Awesome! Good luck with it!!
What's holding me back is my need to have everything perfect 😅. My current bug bear is the setting 😂
Wow that's the same as me!! I wasted 3 years trying to make sure everything was perfect each time I set out to record... I wish I had just done it sooner with what I had at the time! The first video is by far the hardest... it gets so much easier after that! Best of luck to you! :-)
No worries, Rob. Everyone is watching your interesting colored cat. IS that a cat? Haha. What time is it? The time is MEOW! =^.^=
Ok THAT cracked me up!! Stop with the jokes... right MEOW!!! lol
This video and your last one prompted me to subscribe.
🙂
My dog even noticed your cat in the video! First Video coming soon from my channel!
Haha! Love it!! :-)
Good morning Rob! I'm so glad I found your videos, yesterday was my first time watching and I have to say that was a great start for me.
I'm going to jump way ahead with my question that has been on my mind since yesterdays video , by the way it was very encouraging. Question on my mind is, how do people find my videos once I get going, honestly I don't remember how I come across yours, but I am very glad that I have. I love your little assistant so cute. Thanks.
You were probably searching for a similar topic... or if not, perhaps you did before... and so when you opened up TH-cam, they thought you might like to see my video, so they put it on screen as an option for you to click. The way it works is... TH-cam tries REALLY HARD to only display thumbnails to you for videos THEY think you'd like. So when you have a youtube account, they track what you search for, what you watch, etc... lots of stuff... and some people don't like that, but honestly, it's how they get so good at presenting you with video options that you may in fact want to see. They want you to click on videos and watch them... the more you watch, the more ads get seen by viewers and the more money youtube will make. So it's in their best interest to always give you video recommendations that are in fact accurate for you... stuff you might like to see. So when you make videos as a creator, try to structure your titles in a way that the people you are trying to reach would be interested in them... and make your thumbnail equally intriguinbg to your target audience... then when youtube puts it in front of a potential viewer for you, it has a higher chance of getting clicked... and watched. That's pretty much all I know about it! I hope that helps :-)
I saw that over forty video a couple of days ago, and I am now back at your channel. Did you grow by 2K subscribers in a few days or is it just me?
The video definitely seems to be resonating with a lot of people :-) More to come!
Hey Rob! I just watched your last video! It is sparking me to think how I can make my first video and link it to my Etsy shop. Not sure I want to speak to the camera and be face on. I also don’t like my own voice! 😅
You can put a link in all your videos' descriptions... a link directly to your Etsy shop! Then in your videos, be sure to tell people about the link :-) Good luck!!
Loving your content! And your shirt. Is that NS’s flag?
Thank you!! And yes, it's our province's crest... made by "New Scotland Clothing" (New Scotland is what Nova Scotia actually translates to... in Gaelic I believe :-)
#101...just sayin'!
It’s a learning curve for sure. I have several, if not most, that are not well edited; scrambled, loud backgrounds, etc. I haven’t made one yet that I actually like… But I’ll keep going! Great info! Ps… I am not a fan of AI videos. It lacks authenticity to me.
You and me both!! Authenticity is much more interesting to watch :-)
Could u share a link to your very first video. Love your channel BTW.

@@RobtheMaritimer wow, you have improved Rob!
@@robertmcgregor8144 Thanks! I try to improve “something” after every video :)
I appreciate your comments about success. Money doesn't suck but that is not the only reason to be present. If you don't put in work to stay relevant in your workplace, you become irrelevant by default.
Good morning, do you have any ideas about starting a vlog? Thanks for this channel it will be a go to for me in the journey. I’m wanting to start a living alone vlog but live in Canada and wondering if people would be interested
Go for it! People would most certainly be interested! Good luck with it!! :-)
Good job!
Did you create a separate youtube account under a different email, or add an account to your personal youtube account? How does that work? I want to name my content creator channel something different from what my personal account is named. I am a premium member. Do I need to be, or is it best to be, premium if I create a new account for content creation?
You can do it either way… as a brand channel under your personal account or create a new account with another email… either will work and it doesn’t matter which way you do it. Whether you have a premium TH-cam account or not doesn’t matter as far as that goes… that just takes the ads away for you when watching videos :)

Hey Rob. So I am trying to see your services on Fiverr but when I click the link it just takes me to the site and i cannot find your profile.
My profile is here... www.fiverr.com/themaritimer
For “watch time”, how long would you suggest a video should approximately be?
Some people have a short attention span.
The short answer to that is, "make it only as long as you need to in order to tell the story, and no longer". There's really no right answer to this and it can be frustrating trying to figure it out... but knowing that many viewers don't have a very long attention span, try to make videos shorter if possible. I like the 8-10 minute range, but it totally depends on the content. Some videos need more time to get your point across or teach something. I have videos that are only 3 minutes and some others that are 60 minutes. Anyways, I hope that helps! Good luck :-)
@@RobtheMaritimer thanks 🤩
I will chime in although I am no expert. Idk how long your content needs to be, but you need to get to that content fast! The lengthy intros are bad and nobody wants to listen to a 3 minute rant about a trip to the hamptons. I make physics tutorial videos for my zoom class and my lengthy front loading about friction, newtons laws, blah blah blah were my biggest complaint.
Could you start a few videos and then just delete them later?
Yes you can… but wouldn’t it be fun to look back at them later once you become a video editing expert? ;) Also keep in mind that when you delete videos from TH-cam, they’re gone forever (unless you kept a copy) AND any stats you had like views and watch hours from those videos will be gone too. I hope that helps :-)
There is an option to change the video from public to private setting. I did that with some of my earlier videos that later were no longer relevant. 😊
This is the perfect example of listening to your audience, figuring out what is working and rinsing and repeating. I now look forward to the bloopers 🙂 Thanks for sharing. Great content
