A big thank you for the program. The spontaneity between the two of you is great. You two have given me a lot of information. I need to watch the program again and take notes and then apply to my tools, materials and my work.

I think the Daniel Smith people seek out specific pigments too. I love how some of the manufacturers are so passionate about making their colors a delight. And it works.

Gosh, I learned on cheap paper and really learned water control that by the time I got to arches I was in for a shock… All the beautiful loose floral strokes I’d honed were dry brush crap on Arches. I had to relearn how to work with my paper, BUT wow, now I can layer, glaze and poke color into petals and leaves beautifully. I had the reverse experience going from pulp to cotton, but you’re right it’s harder to use pulp but I’m grateful that I learned that water control. It serves me well

Steve and Marty, I couldn't watch this live yesterday, but I got up this morning at 6:00 to begin watching, and I enjoyed every minute of your conversation! I feel like I got to know both of you and I learned so much from each of you. I have watched almost all of Steve's videos but only a few of Marty's, but I plan to subscribe and watch a lot more. You guys have a great friendship that shows, and you complement each other very well, in that you don't use the same stuff necessarily, but agree on the things that matter the most, and that imparts the information that we need. Thanks so much to you both!

Thanks to the pair of you for putting this together. You seemed to be having a good time and I did also. I took several pages of reference notes that I feel will assist my memory. I have been guilty of " Binge" watching episodes, as well as " Just collecting art materials" ( books also). It was most enjoyable and entertaining ( I laughed many times)watching two like minded ( but different) young men discussing the art that they love. This must in -turn rub off to those who view your collective and individual channels. Thanks heaps...Cheers also to Rita and Val for their part in the presentation of this video.

I wish I'd seen this a year ago when I started watercolour and was buying cheaper papers. I struggle to find cost efficient but sturdy paper - kissed so many frogs. I envy your ability to get Arches so cheaply in the US. People have asked me what brand of brushes I use and then look at me funny (or with pity) when I tell them Crayola. I bought their set of five for $5 and they've been great; especially for lifting. I make most of my trees with the Crayola brushes in acrylic and WC both.

Just love these two way videos....please please do more! Really interesting useful information helps me hunt out better supplies and try new things. It's also helped me have the courage to try....for too long I've sat on art supplies thinking Id use them when I'm good enough! Whenever that is! You've both reignited my passion for painting and my determination to get to grips with watercolour...it's not a medium that's easy, and coming from an oil painting and pastel background I might as well have been talking Mandarin....it's a whole new language! Thank you for helping us out with your knowledge and enormous talent. P.s. Marty that was funny about your channel being like radio...but actually you do have the most soothing voice! When chaos surrounds me I shall stick one of your videos on calm me!

Love the video!!! Saw something and didn't get a chance on the live: A tip for those who don't like the soaked in look of high "quality" paper or want the paper to show beneath the transparent pigment to make the glow vibrate... try using Strathmore 400 Series 140# cold press on the BACK/wrong side. Love it... nice cross between cold and hot press.

I can’t believe I am just watching this 🤦🏻‍♀️ You guys have a great vibe that keeps things interesting. You should most definitely do more videos like this!
Also on the topic of watercolor sketchbooks: I went crazy trying to find the perfect one. There was always something missing. This led me to bookbinding, which opened up an entirely new hobby for me. I’m talking professionally-made, hardbound, open flat sketchbooks made with whatever paper you want. I’ve done this with my favorite papers in all different sizes. Now I can say that I truly have the perfect sketchbook because it was tailored just for me. Plus it makes room for you to collect more paper but at the cost of a little bit of room on your sketchbook shelf.
If you’re not interested in bookbinding, that’s totally fine! There are a bunch of sellers on Etsy that sell hand-made hardbound watercolor sketchbooks that I am sure would make you a custom sketchbook. Just shoot them a message.
Thanks for all the wonderful information, even if I am getting here a bit late 😂

I started painting in watercolor rather by chance one year ago when I was studying in Zurich (Switzerland) and thought it would be a nice hobby to distract me from my studies, especially for painting the beautiful landscapes there. Because I didn’t want to spend more time on researching materials than on painting itself, I bought a fairly okish watercolor set, a quill brush (the only nice watercolor brush at the local art supplier) but the cheapest watercolor paper. I had no clue about how important watercolor paper is and I ended up being quite frustrated because my colors never laid on the paper quite like in the tutorials I was watching and I thought it was because I was not skilled enough. Anyway, I stopped painting for a while and now I’m getting back at it. I’m glad I discovered your channel and Marty’s because I’ve learned so much! I’ve just ordered my first Arches paper and fingers crossed that it will serve me better!

Definitely enjoyed listening to this. I know I have been using Winsor Newton paints for years. Hearing you talk makes me want to spend some money on M. Graham! I was the same way when I started painting. I used student grade paints without knowing the difference. I definitely agree with your assessment of Arches paper. On the suggestion of another artist friend, I purchased some Saunders Waterford. I am anxious to try it out. I tell my students as long as it is 100% cotton paper, that you are good. But the paper is even more important than the paint that you are using. Walking into a local art supply store and seeing all of the choices, makes me want to spend lots of $$ and try things out!

Hey Steve! I've yet to watch a tutorial or review of yours that I haven't learned some truly great info and techniques! Marty Owings and Lindsay (I've been watching her channel a lot too) are great recources also and have just started watching Marty's channel after I very recently watched a live Q & A from 2016 with him, Lindsay, Cinnamon, Lisa from Lachri Fine Art and last but not least, YOU! 🤣 (great video, thank you so much!). I have to especially thank you for naming "The Complete Watercolorist's Essential Notebook," as I about tore our home apart (and even sent a Facebook private message to you in desperation trying to find the name of this watercolor "encylopedia") you recommended in one of early vidos of yours I watched. Also, I checked out the art of Nita Engle and see why you are such a fan! What truly awe inspiring art!!! Basically, I just want you to know that the countless hours you put into the videos you've posted over the past several years have impacted this newbie immensely and I am ever so grateful. We are in the process of buying a new home, but am looking forward to becoming a Patreon of yours to keep those videos of your coming! With artists like you sharing your gift, I am already seeing so much improvement in my work. When I first started I bought a set of 60 Holbein watercolor paints and didn't realize that I should have put my money in the paper! You couldn't be more right about the paper! It truly does makes ALL the difference! Sorry for the lllooonnngggg comment, but I really wanted you to know that your video topics coupled with your teaching style (love the Bible quotes at the end of your videos too!!) have impacted this super enthusiastic watercolor novice more than I can say. God bless! ❤️

I just make my own sketchbooks with arches cold press it’s really not hard to stitch bound them and I can make them any size I want and they’re pretty cost effective when I buy the large sheets of paper and tear it down to size. I don’t waste any of it. If I end up with small strips or pieces I just use them separately or for swatches or practice strokes when I’m painting.

The most inexpensive 100% cotton watercolor sketchbook is the Paul Rubens one or the Strathmore 500. I have only tried the Paul Rubens so far, but I am needing a new sketchbook soon. Etchr has theirs as well, but they are almost double the price for about the same amount of pages and smaller size. The paper may be better though, so I still want to try it. I just wish they had a cold pressed option in the Paul Rubens, but I still really enjoy it. It is so much nicer having cotton paper in a sketchbook! I'm definitely not going back when it comes to watercolor, although I keep an additional mixed media sketchbook for sketching or playing with other media.✌💙🎨

Enjoyed the duo jam. Thanks for making the time to share your information with us. Question. What is a good printer to use when printing out reference photos downloaded on computer to a printer on photo paper? Also, what kind of lamp/lighting is good to have when doing watercolor? I need to purchase both. Been watercolor painting for 2 years now. Love it and ready to upgrade to better products. Thanks for help.

Hi Jane - Great questions. I use a Canon printer, they seem to have outstanding image engines and great inks. As for lighting, it's totally your preference. I use the old school drafting lamps because that's what I started out with. :-)

I use a Canon printer also. Love it! I use standard fluorescent fixtures but make sure I have full spectrum "daylight" lighting.

Marty, you obviously haven't tried the Etcher Perfect Sketchbook! It's a dream, 300gsm, 100% cotton. I will never use any other sketchbook. I use a lot of water and it never buckles. And also you both might be interested in Baohong Academy paper. It's another amazing paper on a par, actually better than Arches because it dries flat on the block. FLAT. This academy grade paper is better than Arches. I was blown away. I couldn't recommend it enough. Would love to see you give it a try. Baohong is sometimes called Meeden in some markets.

Interesting discussion - especially about your opinion, Steve, on Winsor & Newton, which I started off with but now have more Daniel Smith paints than any other brand. Love their paints. Have tried a few M Graham watercolors and they are good paints but I'm a big Daniel Smith convert.

Yep, was once a Winsor & Newton user myself. Probably a lot of people start that way because its so readily available. Daniel Smith is a fabulous paint. No argument here. Its in my definite top 5.

Great Video ,thanks for all good Info).
One thing is for sure that the expensive brush doesn't make artist better but the hard work and practice and with any brush)).
Thanks Much and I'm keep watching )
    Appreciate!

I totally agree with the paper argument. I'm using cheap taklon brushes and W&N Cotmans with some cheap student grade Fabriano Studio. The paper frustrates me so much.

Just a side note, if you have supplies you would like to get rid of local schools could use them. My daughter brought home some really terrible watercolor paper to do her project on. I gave her some of my previous paper because I wanted her to start out right and not get discouraged.

Fabriano Aquarello have a 300gsm bound book of 100% watercolor paper. Best quality. Bockingford is great for "lifting" paints.

I totally agree with you regarding the price of art supplies. In most cases you are better to save a little longer and be happy with your results as the cheap supplies just don't work as well. There are a few exceptions to that though. I have found the Koh-I-Noor both the regular colored pencils and the watercolor pencils perform at a much higher level than their price would suggest which makes them great for people just starting out. The other nice thing is the colors between the sets are the same so it's great if you like mixed media work as well. I have a couple of cheaper sets of colored pencils that perform fairly well but aren't lightfast, and I use those in my sketchbooks and save the better pencils for full projects which helps too but you aren't gonna get far using crayola, BUT if it's all you've got.... use em!!!
