    I've seen other artists/creatives review these products recently, but yours is by far the best (and not just because of the fashion poses at the beginning). You're so thorough and balanced, and I appreciate those qualities in a product review. So thanks!

    Hi Steve, I’m finally considering buying an etchr slate for plein air and viewed this original review first. Love the 50’s Madmen ad background music! LOL. One thing I’m seeking is a tray to hold my small paint palettes. I’m also considering the Ugo pochade for that reason. Thanks for the videos!

    As someone who bought their Nomad satchel, I'm extremely excited about this. The Nomad, while really cool, was too thin and you couldn't fit much in it. You were limited to a tablet or thin sketchbook with your tools. I couldn't use it for watercolor so it's mostly just been used for sketching if I want to be comfy on the couch or in bed. Definitely getting the Etchr when it launches. Great and thorough review!

    Your review of this fabulous art satchel was so great that I am getting it and the field case for Christmas! I don't do much outdoors, but this will inspire me to take advantage of the beach for sketching and watercolor when the weather is cool and dry enough. So versatile! Can't wait! Liked seeing it in action when you used it at Carl Sandburg home painting. Thanks!

    This looks to be a really stylish product and so many possibilities!!! Maybe limiting myself to just a very simplistic approach at first would at least help me remember where I put everything but then gradually adding as I become more familiar with it. Great review Steve! Thank you.

      Thanks Lilia! Yes, this bag does tempt to over do the cargo. I found it most helpful, like any bag, just to lay out the contents you need and then find the best way to pack them all. Leave the unneeded components at home.

    I liked the review well enough to watch the whole thing. However, I'm the kind of guy who takes great pride in using a cottage cheese container instead of purchasing a special water bucket sold at the art store. I find it is very effective when I minimizing the gear I take into the field. I always carry a backpack on my hikes and simplifying things reduces weight and saves energy. This video did get me to thinking more about organizing my painting equipment for my next trip. Like you said, it isn't for everyone. For me, it might be too complex and heavy. Sketching in nature (like Cathy Johnson says) is as complex or as simple as you want to make it.

    A most excellent review of a beautiful product, Steve, thank you! Your thorough coverage was worth every moment of watching. My only concern with the review would be that I'd like to have seen it, filled practically, with supplies actually used in the field, be it prepped for a coffee shop, urban walk, or plein air wander. My suspicion would be that once the bag is loaded, it's going to get heavy and quite bloated and/or bulky. I use an extensive laptop case for my artsyfart travels, with a fraction of the incredible features of the Etchr bag, but it suits my needs well with minimal bulk. Mr. Teoh did a review a couple of weeks ago on the field kit, as well, which peaked my interest. This, however, really fleshed out the practicality of the product, which was outstanding. The only other comment I might make is that the slide in your back yard is pretty darned sweet. Kinda jealous on that. lol! Thank you again, and cheers!! GREAT video - especially the editing, which is barely noticeable. That's an art in itself! :)

    • @mindofwatercolor
      @mindofwatercolor  7 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      Yeah, the thing is there are sooo many ways it can be set up. For example, you can remove ALL the holders and just go with the caddy, net pouch and built in pockets and its a slim, versatile case. But like an on demand 4WD vehicle, you know you can kick in the extras if you need them. In the end I decided to show it how I would use it for my own plein air watercolor sketching (10:30 & 11:30 in the video are probably the best shots of the utensils set up the way I plan to use it.) That configuration was settled on after playing with it for an entire afternoon. Whew! It was sort of like playing with legos. The possibilities were dizzying. I found myself continually tempted to put in too much which would make it too bulky and heavy. With all the holders they include it makes you feel like you have to use them all rather than layout exactly what you need for the day. Its less bulky and lighter than the backpack I bought specifically for my bigger plein air set up and still able to hold the same essentials. This really surprised me. I may do a follow up video that shows in more detail how I've set it up for myself. In addition to the utensils I can carry at least two palettes, two WC sketchbooks or a sketchbook and a block AND if I wanted, a laptop or iPad on top of that.
      Thanks man, and for the kind video and editing comments!

      I got my etchr art bag today and before loading it at all it broke the top of my tripod. So I tried the over the shoulder thing but my chest got in the way of being able to see the sketchpad to sketch. So if you are a girl it won't work for you that way. The only way I can see it working is if you are sitting down and put it on your lap or on a table. That was not the purpose of purchasing this. It was to go plen air. The quality is superb. But so far I have a sense of disappointment in this product in terms of functionality. Now I have it loaded.... it is very heavy and will only work well as a back pack.... At almost $400.00 imported after shipping duties and taxes that is a bit pricey.

    Based partially on this review, I just got the Satchel, although without the Field Case. Trying to get it all configured may take me another week😀. There may actually be too many choices. I love your idea of using the magnetic clip to hold your pallette, but I'm using a Portable Painter. I'm trying to figure out how to secure it to the primary drawing surface and unfortunately magnets are not an option. Any thoughts? I considered looping one of the bungies over it. Or using stick on Velcro spots on the bottom of one well.

    How can you put anything in the front flap there? When you lifted up the front there, you see straps to hold pencils or other stuff, but but once you close the flap, what stops everything from falling out the bottom front onto the floor? It would have seemed better to have a flap go up as well as down to secure whatever goes there.

      @mindofwatercolor  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It didn't seem to be overly weighty to me for what it was. Because of the heavy duty materials used, its not a super lightweight bag when empty. I'll say that. But from that point, weight can vary tremendously because of all the ways you can configure and pack it. If you're a student carrying a laptop and a couple heavy books in addition to all your art supplies its going to be pretty heavy. For me and what I normally carry, it was no heavier than my usual plein air backpack and probably a little lighter. Just keep in mind that its designed for the mobile creative, artist traveler, student or plein air or urban sketcher type frequently on the go, who like to carry a good bit of art stuff and a variety of stuff, its practically luggage like. If thats not you its probably overkill.

      Yes, but I sort of rotate between different carry solutions.

    That's designed for Batman. In backpack mode, is there some padding to stop it digging in your back (memories of old backpacks from the 60s)? And love that pizzicato string music. :-)

    What travel watercolor brushes are those you showed in the review?

    • @mindofwatercolor
      @mindofwatercolor  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      A variety. I'm not even sure I know where they all came from but I have a couple Rosemary collapsible brushes (search rosemaryandco.com) A SilverBrush Black Velvet (amzn.to/2fKGJUK) and a Cheap Joes Pseudo Sable collapsible that was given to me.

    Should you quit art than you can always go to modeling Steve. ;-)
    Big thumbs up for the people who designed this bag. Very thought trough. It's not for me since I hardly do plein air but I think a great thing for anyone who does. And the price, well let's say I have handbags which are equally expensive. If I was a plein air artist I would buy this in a heartbeat.

    does the tripod you recommend comfortably hold this bag without breaking it? I got my etchr today and it broke the top of my tripod in no time flat. the reviews on this suggest it is for lightweight cameras etc. This bag is anything but lightweight.

    • @mindofwatercolor
      @mindofwatercolor  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Mine works very well. You really should use a ball head and a medium weight to heavy weight tripod.

    I'm sorry if this is a dumb question, but how do I purchase one? Just back them on kickstarter even though they're fully funded now? Or will they open a shop? Any information would be helpful!

    • @mindofwatercolor
      @mindofwatercolor  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      On their Kickstarter page just scroll down, looking on the right side and note the support levels. Each level tells you what reward you get exactly and the delivery date. As the slots for each release fill up it gets more expensive but there are several slots left.

    What a brilliant design! If only I was younger and richer:-) How much does it weigh loaded with your supplies? For anyone looking for a lighter, less expensive option, check out Darsie Beck's easel bag -- I take mine everywhere. I would love to see it reviewed!

      Hi Debbie! We don't have final specs as of yet, but our prototype of the Etchr Art Satchel by itself is approximately 0.5kg / 1.1lbs, and can support up to 6.2kg / 14lbs. Pulling from one of Steve's responses to a similar comment, "Mine loaded up is around 10 lbs. Will vary a good bit depending on whether you take a laptop or heavy books or not." Let me know if you have any additional questions. :) - Mina Roy (Etchr Lab)

      I have a set up that I've established. All the messing around was done up front to see what set up I preferred. I don't change it now. I can set up in in the field in about 10 min. or less.
