I love the artstyle in Mamo and how some the main characters have goofy expressions, I especially love how Lupin acts it's simaly to how he acts in the manga i dig it
It’s hard for me to choose between Cagliostro and Mamo as my favorite Lupin the Third movie. Both films are fantastic in their own right. And I guess you can call them the Ying and Yang of Lupin films.
Mamo was my first entry into the Lupin franchise. Bought the secret of Mamo at a store at 10 years old because I could see a topless woman on the cover being held by a skinny cool guy in a jacket. After I watched the movie a few times I forgot all about Lupin, and when I turned 20 or so I had such the nostalgia for the movie- leading me to keep up with the animated series currently airing (part 4 at the time). A lot of the themes went over my head but I distinctly remember the offer of immortality to Lupin and his response “forever isn’t really forever”. Blew my mind at the time. The philosophy in the movie is an interesting narrative as I’m older upon rewatching- and it’s more compelling now that I actually understand the themes and characters. Your review was terrific and well crafted. Thanks for sharing this perspective and creating this.
Something that can be related to Mamo being a giant brain just shows not only how much of a god complex he has but the general premise of the cloning process. He was probably considered to be a god in ancient times and developed the means to keep himself alive out of fear of death. The little dwarfs throughout the story are all deviations of the original, including the personalities of his latest clones. I have no doubt of my mind that Mamo was a human being, for his desire to escape death is quite a human thing to think about
Wonderful review my good sir, I’ve been loving this Lupin the Third series you’ve been doing. Lupin the Third is my favorite anime and manga, so getting to hear someone talk about it is nice. Keep up the wonderful work!
What I like about these retrospectives is that I'm also learning new things about the Lupin the Third's history, I think I prefer Cagliostro over Mamo but Cagliostro was the very first Lupin thing I saw.
I love Cagliostro, but I'm starting to love Mamo even more. I didn't actually like it that much on a first viewing, but on a second viewing, when I knew what to expect, I could suddenly appreciate everything about it much more. I just love this films aesthetic so much - I love how the characters look very different to their environment, the compositions and weird angles, the colour schemes, the exaggerated character faces. And I love how weird and philosophical it gets. It's a fantastic film.
Even though this Lupin the 3rd film is very controversial. I just still for whatever reason can't help but love it. It strangely enough is my favorite Lupin the 3rd film. Momo is definitely one of the best Lupin 3rd villains, he is definitely extremely controversial for obvious reasons. Yet he has such a extreme complexity with his heavy sci fi plot points and his philosophical viewpoints along with the duality of Lupins philosophical viewpoints. He even briefly mentally broke Lupin, AND the rest of his crew!
I watched Mamo and Caligastro in one go, switching between them every 10 minutes, until I finally have chosen to stick with Mamo. It's fun and crazy, and I can easilly see how a cult series can grow out of it. Watching Caligastro, I only see Miyadzaki and his great potential.
This is still my favorite Lupin film and goes beyond that to just being one of my top films ever. I honestly perfer it to CoC and I always feel bad it gets side lined for its follow up.
I always preferred this one because it was funny and fascinating. Cagliostro is solid but I it just doesn't feel like Lupin to me but not everyone like's this kind of humor so Cagliostro is more palatable to them
There are definitely some songs from Part 2's '77 and '78 seasons that are reused for Mamo. Dangerous Zone is one, for example. But I'll concede that I might have mixed up a lot of it in my head as a consequence of watching Part 2 first for this series.
People don't get it!!! I LOVE this film! I love it more than Cagliostro! It's so gritty, deep, with a tight story! This film is a lupin story #streamlinedub for the win
I appreciate this review, hearing something that’s a different perspective of my own. I did not like this movie that much, and I generally like a lot of Lupin the 3rd. The art direction and the animation’s cool, and there’s some memorable moments, but I don’t think the story gives me enough to care about what happens, if that makes sense. Cagliostro was my Lupin introduction, followed by watching the Green Jacket series, and currently I’ve been watching Red Jacket, even took a detour to watch Legend of the Gold of Babylon, all of which I’ve liked to varying degrees. This one though… didn’t click.
I had just watched this the other day. It was a pretty enjoyable film, albeit it was probably about 20 minutes too long. There were a lot of parts that it felt like were stalling. Also, I'm not sure I was a fan of either Lupin or Fujiko in this one. Fujiko usually has some sort of reason she betrays Lupin that is going to make her rich, but here, she was just betraying him for the sake of betraying him. As for Lupin, he acted like a compelte oblivious morons at times. In the series we just watched, he always seemed to know a situation before walking into it and if he didn't, he learned from it and rectified the issue quickly. Here, he unkonwing kept making one bad decision after another and never seemed to learn from his mistakes. Animation was nice most of the time. What's really interesting was the Blu-Ray having all of the different English language tracks on it. God damn. How many times did they feel the need to dub that movie? Three of them were all recorded in less than 10 years. Not that it matters because good god did the dubs suck in the scenes we listened to. The only guy who seemed to even know what Lupin was supposed to sound like was Tony Oliver in the Pionerr one. No one has gotten Zenigata right. Meanwhile, the script was all over the place with the Pioneer dub being probably the worst.
My favorite Lupin III film, nothing against Cagliostro, I just love the tripy style of Lupin's first film

This movie was actually monkey punch’s personal favorite movie!

Well, this was quicker than expected. Great job as usual and keep up the good work. Hope you and your channel are safe.
Great review man. Made sure to watch mamo after the vid and can say, it's a awesome lupin movie. Can't wait for the cagliostro review
Glad you enjoyed it!
Always loving the looks at Lupin
Truly a certified lupin classic. And the soundtrack 👌 🔥 J. Cole even sampled it
The geneon dub is GOAT. No contest.
No contest needed I do like the dub from geneon cuz that does got me into the series
My favourite Lupin film. Still have the VHS of the Italian dub to this day
This is still my favorite Lupin film and goes beyond that to just being one of my top films ever. I honestly perfer it to CoC and I always feel bad it gets side lined for its follow up.

Great video, really enjoying the series :D
good video but the music for this film is completely original, it's part 2 that reused the mamo tracks in the '79 season, not the other way around

The best part of the Geneon dub was the VA for the President doing his best George W. Bush impression. "Listen here, MA'AM-OH..."
Happy 45th anniversary mystery of mamo!!!

Mamo is Waaaayyy better than Cagliostro. I think it has all the right things going on in all the right places.
I'm not sure if either is better, but they both excel at different things.
Mamo is a great lupin film, Cagliostro is a great film but not a great lupin film.
Can you do a Dominion and New Dominion Tank Police retrospective? These are great videos.
Best Lupin film overall, love Caglio but the series is best encapsulated by Mamo.
Fantastic retrospective series so far! Consider me hooked!
I'm gonna subscribe so I don't miss any future vids. I love me some good Lupin content.
I have the Bluray and its wonderful!

My name is Mamo. by Japanese →私の名はマモー=WATASHI NO NA WA MAMO.
Yeah i loved this movie.
