  • We continue Legacy of Lupin with a retrospective and review of the 1995 theatrical movie Farewell to Nostradamus. The first theatrical movie since 1985's Legend of the Gold of Babylon, it was also the first Lupin anime project released after the passing of Yasuo Yamada. With Kanichi Kurita stepping up to the plate going forward, let's see if this movie lives up to the legacy of Yamada and the Lupin series!

    What's your thoughts on Farewell to Nostradamus?

      The actual movie is... okay. It definitely has stuff going for it but it also has stuff *not* going for it. The good stuff starts with the animation. It looks good and stuff because it has a theatrical budget which obviously it's gonna look better than a TV special. The skyscraper location just might be one of my favorite set pieces in the entire Lupin franchise. I’m glad they reserved a location like this for a theatrical film because a TV movie would most likely not give this justice ‘cause they don’t have the time or the money compared to a movie on the big screen. And the ending sequence where Lupin and Julia escape from a tidal wave is great utilizes the location of the skyscraper more the entirety of the rest of the movie, but I'm getting ahead of myself. While the skyscraper location is really cool and could have actually been used for the whole movie, it’s only used at the beginning and ending which I think is a huge missed opportunity because seeing Lupin trying to navigate this mini city was fun and the beginning and ending showed that, but the movie doesn’t do that which I think is a huge shame. The villains are fine, but at this point they are extremely unmemorable and boring with not a lot to say. Julia is okay, her attempted drama by her not getting enough attention from her parents is really generic and it’s only brought up in one scene and the movie doesn’t do anything with it until the conflict is magically resolved by the ending, but the memorable thing about her that she keeps accusing Lupin as a pedophile which like… no, please don’t, it’s not funny and still wasn’t funny when Julia kept saying it. There was this Sergio kid who has this sad origin story which is entire irrelevant to the plot and that nugget of a subplot with him liking Julia is in one scene and goes nowhere. I guess it is sweet Julia wanting to give Sergio a new boat at the end of the movie, but it never shows us Sergio actually getting a boat and I don’t think a new boat is as good of a gift for someone who doesn’t have a home anymore. The original gang are fine as well. Zenigata, as per usual, doesn’t really have a real role within three main story and is mostly a background character, but there could of been an easy way to fix that and the fact that this movie doesn’t take this route is another missed potential. Why not Zenigata actually try to search for Julia because since it seems that Lupin is involved somehow to him, it would be in his derestriction to find her as a bonus to maybe capturing Lupin. It could of been really interesting for Zenigata to actually use his Inspector skills for once and try to put the pieces together to find his girl while he struggles to believe that Lupin would resort to kidnapping while the Lupin gang still do their shenanigans. That could of been really interesting and yet the movie doesn’t take that route for the the usual “Zenigata’s still in the movie, but not apart of the story” thing. Lupin apparently has an uncle named Philip whose like the first relative of Lupin that we don’t see in a flashback, but he has less than 4 minutes of screen time until he’s killed off and it’s more of an inconvenience to Lupin than anything else. It never talks about the relationship between Lupin and Philip and it doesn’t even matter that Philip is Lupin’s uncle, it could of just been some random dude and the fact that they wanted Philip to be Lupin’s uncle makes for a problem that could of been easily avoided if they didn’t want to do anything with it. There's also this tiny conflict that Douglas, whose running for president, is using Julia's kidnapping to gain sympathy points for his election and it's suggested that his wife should run of president as a comprise to save their daughter, but this also goes nowhere.
      That's the bottom line of the movie, it has stuff going for it, but it introduces a bunch potentially interesting sub-conflicts for something cool, but they don't do anything with most of the sub-conflicts and other opportunities that could of improved the movie are also looked over. Yeah, that's the movie, it's decent and that's it really. I don't like being more negative than positive with these movies, but that's just how it is

      I haven't watched it all the way, but the animation looks great, and Colleen kills it in the dub, despite playing a minor character

      My fave Lupin movie. The animation is amazing. I love the character’s portrayals here, especially Lupin. It’s just a lot of fun and jam-packed with crazy action and set pieces. Even some unexpected uneasy drama occasionally. It’s so Lupin.

    This is definitely a top 5 Lupin film. You can argue that the plot can get a bit chaotic but really chaos is what makes Lupin very enjoyable for me.

    Colleen Clinkenbeared has always been great. Even in minor roles, she shines. I bet she would have made for a great Fujiko Mine.
    I can understand why Kurita was nervous about playing Lupin but it is fun to watch him grow more comfortable in the role. Honestly, Kurita has done a fine job as Lupin. Yamada would be proud.

    For a bit of an flawed film, this is still one of my favourite Lupin III's film. There's so much to say about this, the performance everyone (both Japanese and English voice actors & actresses respectfully) gave was great. Yuji Ohno is amazing with his music as usual and the animation was spectacular!
    As it was one of my first Lupin III films along Mamo and Castle of Cagliostro (along with some episodes of Part 2) when I was new to the franchise and fandom. I was enjoying myself just watching this film the whole time and I would say this for Kanichi Kurita's first performance as the titular thief himself after Yasuo Yamada's passing. He did a great job and knowing how the times goes on with his voice becoming iconic as Yasuo's, it really does make you feel proud of the guy for how he has come.

    I just watched it the first time. It gives off a 90s disaster/action movie vibe. Which is pretty cool. It has its flaws but definitely in my top 5 Lupin movies. I kinda wish the destruction of the building was set at night idk Die Hard vibes I guess.

    As a brazilian, this movie is absolutely hilarious to me. Not only because I am fairly certain those mind controlling bracelets are based on bracelets of Senhor Bonfim (which is already hilarious on its own, since superstition says that when they fall from your wrist, a wish will come true) but because I could tell the period of production of the movie simply due to how many champonships were represented on the brazilian soccer team's shirt. It was a very fun watch, even if chaotic. I also really like that they went with a hard name to even transliterate with Sergeo (the actual name is written as Sérgio), so I respect the shit out of that

    This movie is one of my favorite Lupin III movies of all time!
    Even if it has little flaws in a plot, I find myself enjoying the movie's animation, art style, comedy and aesthetic. Though I haven't watched it in English dub yet, I must say everyone in Japanese dub does excellent job in their roles and Kanichi Kurita does fine job as Lupin after Yasuo Yamada's passing.
    Overall, this movie has special place in my heart and I'll always rewatch it whenever I want to feel some Lupin hijinks in my mind.

    Lol, this is honestly my favorite Lupin movie not only for the classic Lupin story but the setting takes place in my home city of Atlanta, and I laugh every time I see the futuristic utopia they portray my city as 😂

    Lupin's face stands out to me; by default, he has his Miyazaki/Cagliostro face, but a lot of his more wilder reactions reach Mamo levels of expressiveness. Best of both worlds.
    I love TMS' animation for this one overall. It's paced and drawn like it were one of their Animaniacs or Tiny Toons episodes. It's fun, just like this movie. I really liked this one.

  • @TheT3rr0rMask
    @TheT3rr0rMask ปีที่แล้ว +8

    It's flawed in it's story and tone but I can't help but love it. The animations amazing and the pacing is fast as a bullet train. Most of all, it's extremely fun and never let's up. It's a good movie in the sense of pure entertainment.
    I love the concept of a cult using Nostradamus' predictions, using their weight of interpretation to stir fear. It's a clever take on Nostradamus and is still relevant today and probly forever, how groups use convenient fear to build a following. Why I'm disappointed the film never does much w/it. Think it's problem is the run time, since it's so short none of the ideas have much time to expand. That inconsistent tone is another result, where Execution Island is built as this big threatening dark place yet the lighter side of the film doesn't lead into the change in tone gradually or naturally. Sergio's village massacre just sorta happens as soon as the boat chase ends, making me go "Wait what? You weren't even at your village?". The film tries using it as an extra motivator for Lupin and the audience but it's brought up out of nowhere and since we never see Sergio interact w/his family or witness the village attack it ends up as a cheap means of pulling heart strings.
    With some more work I could see Nostradamus getting closer to the level of Mamo, Calgiostro and The First.

      Side note glad you gave the dub appropriate praise. Imo it's the best of the Funimation dubs (unless you count TWCFM). Every other one they did are full of little awkward bits of acting, but Nostradamus' dub I can sit down and enjoy w/out being taken out of it.

    Farewell to Nostradamus stumbles a few times, but you def tell that it has heart behind it. I think the ending is very good, everybody just standing around, looking at the destroyed building. I think it's sadly something that a lot of people can relate to in the modern day

    Surprisingly, of the Lupin movies this one is my actual favorite. Don't get me wrong, Cagliostro is a wonderful movie. But there's something about the music, animation, and voice acting (english because I love Sonny Strait) that ties the entire movie together for me. The entire movie screams "Fun!" to me, and while the plot may be simple, I just really like this movie all together.

    It's a chaotic movie for sure, but with the strength of the characters, and the solid hooks to the story, it's a reason why many see it as one of the better features in Lupin's entire filmography. Keep up the great work, and have a nice day

    Personally I thought the dubs Pedophile gag was one of the best parts of the movie, as its absurdity and shock value esque nature got me every time. However I totally understand why the joke doesnt land with people, and if you didn't like the joke that it can get old fast

    I waited so long for someone to talk about this underated gem.
    I only have some few opinions about Julia, from the movies i have seen Enternal Mermaid, Castle of Cagliostro, and The first, Julia is probably the most brave and girlboss than the other Lupin girls, she would totally use a gun if the movie let her. I also love the part where she was fighting Chris before got yeeted by him, I was like "bite his face off!" and then she actually bites him which was hilarious and awsome! Her lines in the movie is also better than the other Lupin kids i've seen (even in Part 2).

    I'm surprised by all the positive comments. I've always thought of this as an incredibly weak chapter in the Lupin series. Listless, meandering, full of uninteresting action and "humor", with no proper main villain (the Nostradamus cult leader doesn't even use Nostradamus' actual predictions). The only thing I liked was the concept of the Earth Building, which they kind of wasted the potential of, and that bit of Lupin and Jigen trying to break into the vault on top of the building. Otherwise, a pretty annoying movie.

    • @dannyboidee

      After my first watch I do have to say that it just goes too damn fast at times. Maybe I'm just too used to either a Cagliostro slow-esque type opening or Action-filled opening like Island of Assassins but honestly the very first thing I noticed that bugged me was how quick that opening was. I also agree that this one had no proper villain, and honestly it just felt like the gang was running around back and forth between things. The only thing I really found interesting was execution island and Lupin's uncle. I do love the animation in this one and find it to be a perfect blend of zany and hero Lupin, but the story really felt like it fell apart like the Earth Building at the end of the film.

    • @Name-se3lf
      @Name-se3lf 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      No, you're right, this is one of the most annoying Lupin films of all time. TH-cam commenters always look at things with rose tinted glasses. This movie is not funny, the characters are forgettable and the plot structure is 20 minutes of a good movie + 1 hour of a coma inducing movie + 20 minutes of a good movie. This was clearly an OVA idea at best. Dead or Alive is just better than this, and these would be my bottom two theatrical films.
