Cheers Tim. Like most of my European rail journeys, I enjoyed it but they do terribly on TH-cam for views. Maybe that’s why you missed it 😂 All-in-all though, one of the best sleeper experiences I’ve had.
Really impressed with the sleeper carriages, even with that concrete slab you slept on (love a firm mattress) :D I'm the same though, never get quite enough sleep on any sleeper, and the next day I'm generally walking about in a daze...
Yep, really smart. As a light sleeper, any little noise, jolt etc I struggle with tbh and the more you think about it etc etc……I think I need to book more day rooms for these kind of adventures 👍
Good video, Mark! I wouldn't have expected such a beautiful station at Budapest, nice that so much of the architecture has been preserved. Cheers. Dirk
Hi Dirk, cheers mate. Yep I think the light helped at Nyugati as it was definitely the ‘golden hour’ time of day. Lovely city Budapest, my first time there and I can’t wait to go back.
Enjoyed that one Mark. I'm going to Budapest, hopefully in the next few months to get my teeth done 😂 and, as I have to be there a week was looking for things to do to fill up the time. An overnight to Prague and back seems perfect! 👏
I loved watching this! Brought back the excitement of sleeper trains, which I’ve been on a couple of times but that was over 30 years ago! I fully intend to go on more in the future.
Wow Rebecca, you must get on a few more, they’re a bit different to 30 years ago (well, some of them anyway!). This one’s really nice and reasonably priced I think but you can get some decent fares on the Night Riviera with GWR this time of year. I’ll look out for your adventures 👍
@@LetsMakeaTrip I went on a sleeper from Calais to Marseille with my friend at age 17 which was quite an adventure! And the following year a school trip to Russia which included a sleeper from St Petersburg to Moscow.
The older I get the harder I find it to sleep sobeing on a strange bed and moving would really put me to the test, thanks for another great journey and I look forward to the next one. All the best and stay safe.
I think the Cornish Riviera is better in this respect because it doesn’t break its journey to split the train up (unlike this one and the Cal sleeper).
Great video Mark. You talk about a couple hours sleep as though its enough, but as you say it seems good value for the length of journey and having the compartment to yourself. Shame about the rolls at the end, looked a bit cheap!
Cheers Daz,yep, I reckon I’m ok up to about 10/11 in the morning then I’m starting to struggle with lack of sleep the night before. Not my ideal breakfast tbh but better than nothing and kept me going 😊
This was a great sleeper tbf, but I have to agree, I think I prefer travelling in the day and getting to the destination in a reasonable time and not having to wait around all day to check into your hotel.
I totally agree on your opinion about Budapest. It's such a lovely city and i love Hungary in general, as I've visited quite a bit of the country. My elder brother once travelled on the sleeper train to Berlin about a decade ago, but it's been ages since I last travelled on a sleeper train
I don’t tend to go back to places twice but I’d make an exception here. So much to see and do. Only really scratched the surface in the time I was there. Might need a sneaky city break next summer now 👍
@@LetsMakeaTrip if I have to recommend a good place for summer in Hungary, I would recommend the Balaton lake. In particular Tihany, which is a gem of its own kind

Does the train still spend the entire night in Breclav or does it take a detour to use up the hours? I remember when I used this train in 2015, there were two sleepers to Prague, one arriving at 04:00 and one arriving around 08:00. The 8 AM sleeping car was parked in Breclav most of the night and was attached to an InterCity service in the morning.
I'm going to book a double as you did. It is very confusing on the website. I can't understand what is ticket and what is reservation. Should I buy both as it suggests/show by default?
I normaly can't sleep when there is some noise around me, but I don't have any problem with sleeping in sleeping trains, that train sound is even better, it makes me sleep. 😀
I am a 58 year old man from USA and thinking of taking a solo journey to Lisbon, Prague and Budapest in 2024. I can not find a train from Lisbon to Prague though. I may have to fly to Prague and then train to Budapest? How is the language barrier? Do people speak english? Thanks!
Train from Lisbon to Prague? It's more than 2000 km, that would take you like week to get there by train. 😀 Trains mostly go only to surrounding countries, so if you want to cross whole Europe by train, it's pretty complicated, you need to check all train companies and plan it carefully and you are risking that you miss some train and you are screwed, but if you like such punk traveling, then you can try. 🙂
@@mikeb2611 Few years ago, I was reading about some plan to unify european train ticket systems and have one ticket from A to B where you don't have to care about who operates that and what country is that, but here in Europe, we can't make a deal even about much simplier things, I think this is total utopia, maybe in year 2080. 😀
No catering on board? No bar, no snack bar? The problem with these overnight rooms is that unless you have a place to 'hang out' in - a bar or even a restaurant is that I would feel very claustrophobic with nowhere to 'go'. What's the deal on that score?
The former overnight train from Adelaide to Melbourne (and vice versa) called the Overland used to have sleeper cars and seats. It also had savery nice snack bar/bar on board. I guess it just comes down to what your personal experiences and expectations are. If I get on a train and i am expected to go to bed, then I won't be taking that train.
"Across Eastern Europe"?... Never say that to a Czech or a Hungarian! The Visegrád countries are in *Central* Europe. West Europeans seem to be completely unaware of the difference.
I’m not sure how I missed this video previously but I’m glad I caught up with it. Excellent as always.

My first time there and yep, so much to see and do. Great transport system too. What’s not to like!!👍
Excellent. Lived in Prague a few years back really nice to see the station again and hear the beautiful Czech language being spoken. Thank you. 👍

Having done a few trips overnight it’s great to see how sleeper trains have taken off again across Europe in the last few years.
Agree, hoping to try a few more in the future 👍
