  • Take a journey on BART's newest/shortest line! The beloved Purple Line came roaring back to life after a decade-long absence in 2019, when BART reintroduced it for service between Millbrae and SFO on weekdays and Sundays. Schedule changes in February 2020 made the line operational for all seven days of the week.
    The Purple Line previously ran between SFO and Millbrae from 2003 to 2008, when the SFO extension was in its infancy, but was discontinued to increase efficiency (BART swears it wasn't because its riders were sick of being called "purple people"). Little did we know that in 2019, the Purple Line would come into existence once more.
    The line takes less than four minutes to complete, and is the only line in the system to rely exclusively on four-car trains. The day Fleet of the Future trains operate on this line is likely the day the old legacy fleet is retired.

    I've been on Bart in 2016 and in 2019 and plan on returning in 2021 before the old cars are gone

      Because it also uses Adtranz propulsion system.
      New York R142 and R188 with Bombardier propulsion also sound similar, it is likely that Bombardier continued using a similar propulsion system after acquiring Adtranz. Also similar is Bart legacy trains.

      @@atomstarfireproductions8695 R160 trains built by Alstom use Alstom ONIX propulsion. R160 trains built by Kawasaki use Siemens SITRAC for some of the car sets, and then the Alstom ONIX for the remainder of the fleet. The R142 trains built by Bombardier also use Alstom ONIX propulsion as Bombardier did not have their own MITRAC propulsion available at the time the contract was signed. However, the R179 uses Bombardier MITRAC propulsion, as well as their MITRAC train monitoring system.
      The R142A and R143 trains in New York City use AdTranz propulsion. However, Bombardier had acquired AdTranz and opted for their propulsion since it was already spec'd for those trains at the time of the acquisition. Eventually, the MITRAC propulsion system that Bombardier had initially begun on their own incorporated many features that AdTranz had.

    It's been like 2 years since I've been on BART, also why does the section near the gangway of the door remind me of a living room.

    I don't usually see boarding on a center platform in Millbrae.

    Now we could say the Orange line and the Blue line aren't the only lines that run 4 cars. Difference between Blue and Orange line to The Purple line is Purple runs 4 cars all day while orange and Blue line run 4 cars in the middle of the day. I Might be wrong for Saying the Blue line runs 4 cars in the middle of the day due to seeing more 10 car trains.

      Even on the Orange line I’m seeing a lot more 6 car trains midday right up until just before the pandemic went south. But that is a good thing.

    This has probably been the least confusing airport Bermuda Triangle service, but they got rid of it and now it’s a mess again, with the red line going to the airport.

    It's been a while since I rode the purple line when they discontinued and brought back.

    It would be nice to see the purple line on a extension part or even the new TransBay tube line that is still in the planning stage. The purple line could run from MacArther to Alameda to SF via the new tube that will (hopefully) be built to SF.

      Don't worry, this was filmed before everything got bad. We're not riding transit right now (and neither should anyone else unless it's essential travel).

    I haven't been back to the Bay in a while, do people really refer to BART lines by color now? When I lived there nobody EVER did that.

    • @BayAreaTransitNews
      @BayAreaTransitNews  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Sort of? But not really? The Fleet of the Future refers to the lines by their colors in its automated announcements, so it's probably only a matter of a time before the general public fully catches on.

    Why does Sam trans waste money on a shuttle bus?

    • @transitvideosbayarea
      @transitvideosbayarea 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The Samtrans bus is timed for the Caltrain connection ,plus it has a cheaper fare.

      @Toongeek45 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Most people would. Until 2019, the yellow line was the only way to get to the airport by train. I just wish this line was here when I traveled up there in 2016.

    Does this line still currently only run Legacy Trains?

    • @BayAreaTransitNews
      @BayAreaTransitNews  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Most likely, since I've never seen the Fleet of the Future run with only four cars, but I can't definitively say because I haven't been to SFO or Millbrae in a long while.

    hold up, The doors are normally closed between cars
    Why is it open?

    • @BayAreaTransitNews
      @BayAreaTransitNews  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Purple-Line cars have their gangway doors open, just don't ask us why that is because we have no idea.

    • @assorted9976
      @assorted9976 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      if i had to guess, it would be to help airport travelers switch cars with luggage in hand, which might make it hard to open the gangway doors. but i don't really know anything.

    • @atomstarfireproductions8695
      @atomstarfireproductions8695 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I mean, there’s no need to keep the doors open. The doors are mostly there to close when some cars are not in use and parked and not coupled with head cars. It’s very close to being open gangway but not fully.

  • @lenojames
    @lenojames 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    If the purple line is going to be a "thing", there's no need for it to be any longer than four cars long. Two cars would be plenty.
    But once the purple line is built out and extended down the peninsula into San Jose, connecting with the current San Jose extension at Mineta airport, then more cars would be warranted.

    Does the train look somewhat different to you? I don't ever remember seeing a 2-1 seat config. in a bart train, or the doors in between cars open.

    • @BayAreaTransitNews
      @BayAreaTransitNews  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The 2-1 seat config is pretty standard on a lot of legacy trains, the open gangway doors are unique.

    Cool video
    I wish the yellow Bart train would go from Bakersfield to downtown San Jose and the red line go from Richmond to downtown San Jose
    Also I wish the blue line would go to Livermore
