From the very beginning, my favorite member of Guns 'N Roses. Always dug his solo stuff as well. Having listened to the audio version of Duff's book, and knowing some of the extreme drama happening...I completely understand Izzy's comments here.
Izzy Stradlin has always had a quiet, enigmatic vibe similar to Bob Dylan, both in his style and his approach to songwriting. Like Dylan, Izzy’s lyrics often have this raw, real storytelling quality that gives them a timeless appeal. He doesn’t overdo it-just delivers music in such an effortless, authentic way, which makes him one of those rare, true artists. His contributions to Guns N’ Roses were essential to their sound, and his solo work shows how strong of a songwriter and guitarist he is in his own right. It’s a shame he doesn’t get the recognition he deserves because he’s genuinely one of the greats.

Yes exactly what i always thought. The guy is better than most hairbands of the era had for a lead guitarist. He really made Slash put in some work to stand out against him. Listening to the albums i always got the impression they resented each other being there, but that chemistry still worked.
So bad that Kurt couldn't get a more insightful answer about the replacement of Steven with Matt. He was the one trying to keep a classic rock, Stonesy vibe to their songwriting, and IMO Steven was a key element to that sound. Still, good interview.
When there's band members trying to polish out what was the essence of the band, you'd feel a bit uncomfortable about expressing how you feel about it all. I still think he said enough to be read between the lines. He's comment about Slash's Godfather solo was telling too..
Izzy was just built different from the other guys. You can tell he was pissed that The Godfather was played instead of Double Talkin Jive which was his song.
No. It was not. His last with GnR was on August 31, 1991 at Wembley Stadium. GnR played at Rock in Rio January 20 and 23, 1991. GnR toured North America from May 9 to August 3 that year (40 concerts) and Europe from August 13 to 31 August (7 concerts). Izzy quit GnR on November 7, 1991.

The fact it took Axl the best part of 2 decades to write an album of new material after Izzy left, shows how important he was to the songwriting.
